Chop Suey

There is a dish in chinese restaurants in USA called chop suey which is not available here. Chop suey is 雜碎 where 雜 is zhap / chap (cantonese for various, mixed - same character for chap fan which is mixed rice literally) and 碎 is sui (cantonese for bits and pieces). There is no chop suey locally.

This is my version of chop suey. Rice from 8 days ago with the remaining 3 vegetarian dishes from 1 day ago and the only remaining small portion of chicken breast meat from A&W 2 days ago. Mixed bits and pieces of food in my fridge is my Chop Suey.

I started eating this at 12 noon and finished this dish at 1.30 pm. Took me 1.5 hours because it is too much rice for me so I have to eat slowly. Was very full when done so I didn't eat anything after that. This is my only meal on Friday 4 Dec 2020 d262.

This whole week for 5 days we just stayed at home order food delivery. Yesterday I took one day leave to clear it and I still only stayed at home. Today will be going out to buy food and to do our weekend chores.

Close up photo of the fake fish fillets. Made from soy and seaweed.

The above portions all went into my portion of choy suey.

My portion of rice for the whole day. Just too much.

This much is the remaining portion from the previous day.

Two portions of rice - from GoHeung 8 days ago and from Lucky Alley 5 days ago with the remaining pumpkin mushroom dish 1 day ago mixed in. The target is for the two of us to eat them all up which we did. No wasting food.

Not my breakfast and not my dinner - Yang Kee Radish beef stew noodles from 2 days ago. The remaining yellow wine chicken was also cleared during not my dinner. Basically this day is clearing food day.

  1. I've heard of Chop Suey since I was young - from the movie musical, "Flower Drum Song" starring Nancy Kwan and James Shigata. I guess you're too young to know them. LOL!!!

  2. Very interesting, the fake fish! They even go through the trouble of using seaweed to make it look like fish skin. Awesome!

  5. Rice from 8 days ago? You put inside the fridge? Is it healthy?

    1. Yes rice from 8 days ago in the fridge. It still looks and smells as when it was bought. How to know whether it is healthy or not? You can devise a study method to test it?

    3. Yes they may write that but is there a scientific study. Actually it doesn't matter to me because I intend to die early at 60 years old if not earlier by natural causes. 😄

  6. You sure that's what chop suey is supposed to taste like? Haha. The name doesn't sound nice already, "suey".

Your hubby is very supportive. Mine won't even take a bite of food mixed up like that.

    1. Not the taste. It is what it means, it basically means leftovers all thrown together in a stirfry to clear them. Both of us are low maintenance. Your hubby sounds high maintenance. 😅

    2. My hubby is very fussy when it comes to food. Things that don't look good to him, he refuses to even taste it. And he dislikes many types of food.

    3. Lucky for him that you are a good cook. 😀

  7. All my life I thought that Chop Suey is actually Char Boey but the tastes have difference as told. I must try the real Chop Suey to understand. I often saw them in the menu of Chinese restaurants in US but always ordered other cheapest food to suit my student budget.

    1. Oh, I thought chop suey would be one of the lowest price item in the menu. Please order this chop suey when you are in usa and tell us how it taste. Thanks.
