Tea or Poppo

Since we like the nasi lemak (coconut milk rice) at Tea Garden a lot, we had to go back to Poppo Kanteen to try their nasi lemak again to compare the taste to see which one we like better.

Nasi Lemak with Curry Chicken - MYR8.90 nett. The portion of rice is quite small which is good for me as I am a small eater but this means there are too much sambal and curry sauce. The rice here has a slightly salty taste.

Nasi Lemak Beef Rendang MYR9.90 nett. Same case - too much sambal and beef rendang to match the small portion of rice. Next time, we will order one nasi lemak with a type of meat and then order just the plain rice for MYR1.80 nett to go with the sauce and sambal from the nasi lemak.

Verdict is I like the taste of Tea Garden's nasi lemak better but the price here is better due to the smaller rice portion.

Poppo Kanteen 3

We did not get to try the mutton curry and beef rendang during our visit 1 and visit 2 so we went there again just for these two dishes. The price of nasi lemak with mutton curry or beef rendang is more than then price of the items (in the a la carte menu) when ordered separately so we went with the more affordable option.

Mutton curry - MYR9.90 nett. This is the usual sized rice bowl and I am surprised to find about 4 big chunks of mutton in it with two wedges of potatoes. The meat can be considered tender but it is sticking to a piece of membrane which is quite tough to chew (the membrane). I don't think I dare to order this dish again because the mutton is too much for both of us to handle.

Beef rendang - MYR6.90 nett. The slices of beef is not as tender as the mutton but still manageable. The taste is unlike the taste of beef rendang that we are used to. We detect a strong ginger taste in this dish which is not present in the beef rendang that we have eaten before at other eateries.

Deep fried egg - MYR1.50 nett with very crispy edges but with a runny yolk.

Plain white rice with a piece of chip (keropok) - MYR1.80 nett and we ordered two plates of this since we had a lot of curry and rendang sauces to finish.

Deep fried shallots on top of the rice. The height of the rice block is the same as that of a usual table spoon which means there is a lot of rice. We should have just ordered one plate of rice and either mutton or beef to share because we had difficulty finishing all the food.

White coffee (cold) - MYR4.90 nett. I think cane sugar is used to prepare this giving it a richer taste.

Total bill - MYR26.80 nett for two

Photo to show that the bowl used for the mutton curry is a small usual sized rice bowl.

Poppo Kanteen again

Since Poppo Kanteen is a new eatery in Sri Petaling, we went back to try other items on their menu, especially the mutton and beef dishes.

Briyani Gam Mutton - MYR17.90 nett. There is a lot of mutton underneath the rice. The mutton is tender but the dark gravy is on the sweet side with a strong taste of star anise and clove which is unlike the taste of briyani gam mutton that I have eaten before. There are pieces of carrots and potatoes in the small bowl of curry given. The acar (pickled raw cucumber, onion, pineapple) is sourish sweet and tasty.

Nasi Lemak Chicken Rendang (Coconut milk rice with chicken cooked in spices and coconut milk) - MYR8.90 nett. We ordered Beef Rendang but was told it was sold out so we chose chicken rendang. They gave us a big piece of chicken breast meat but the default portion of rice given was quite small, good for people who wants to consume less carbohydrates.

Cendol - MYR4.90 nett - it is sweet with a tinge of saltiness in the coconut milk on coarse ice shavings and there are corn niblets which is not usually present in cendol.

Poppo Cham (cold) - MYR4.90 nett - cham means mix in Cantonese and normally for cham, it will be a mix of tea and coffee but this Poppo Cham drink has milo in it too. The milo taste in this drink overpowered the coffee and tea so we will order the usual cham next time because we prefer coffee and tea.

Total: MYR36.60 nett. We will be back because I have yet to try their mutton curry and beef rendang.

Poppo Kanteen

Nasi Lemak Ayam Berempah (Coconut milk rice with Deep Fried Spiced Chicken) - MYR8.90 nett. Coffee mixed with Tea (Cham) Hot - MYR3.80 nett.

The menu. HQ is in Cheras and they just opened a branch in Sri Petaling. Opening Hours: 8 am to 12 or 1 am.

This eatery took over the corner shoplot that used to be occupied by Tim Kee Chicken Rice and renovated it nicely.
