WG Udon Kobo at Uptown

My friend suggested that we go eat lunch at this eatery that makes their udon in-house so the udon is very fresh.

This is their set menu with 12 different sets but we can choose to have either udon or rice for each set so that makes 24 choices.

Which set would you prefer? Salmon Sashimi Set at MYR 30, Salmon Teriyaki Set at MYR 28, Tempura Set at MYR 26, Kaisen Hotpot Set at MYR 36, Tonkatsu Set at MYR 18 and Tori (fried chicken) Karaage Set at MYR 18. Each set includes a cup of green tea, a bowl of salad and 2 pieces of tamago (egg).

So many choices until I don't know which set to choose. Some items from the ala carte menu also interest me.

From the ala carte menu, the Salmon Udon at MYR 23.90 looks good.

The Salmon Don also looks good - small portion at MYR 13.90 and big portion at MYR 22.90 so if I choose this, I would definitely order the small portion.

In the end, I chose Salmon Yanagawa Set at MYR 28+ (MYR 29.70 nett). Yanagawa is a city in Japan. Salmon Yanagawa is almost like an omelette with chunks of salmon, slices of onions, slices of mushrooms in it. The pieces of salmon are tasty and fresh.

There are 2 choices for the udon broth and I chose the clear soup that is made using konbu (seaweed), katsuobushi (dried smoked tuna flakes), sababushi (dried mackerel flakes) and niboshi (dried young sardines) instead of the kimchi broth.

When I found out that there was quite a lot of sweetish soy sauce broth beneath the salmon omelette, I quickly removed it but the omelette has soaked up quite a lot of the broth so it was on the salty side. I would prefer the omelette to be served without this broth. I wonder if they will entertain my request if I ask them not to put the omelette on top of this soy broth the next time we eat here.

Total bill for 4 pax is MYR 81.20 nett. We should have waited until June 1 so that we do not need to pay the 6% GST. The food is tasty so you can be sure we will eat here again after June 1.

Since they make their udon in-house, they also sell the raw udon at MYR 10 nett for 450g which is the portion that is recommended for 3 pax.

Special September Food

For the month of July and August 2016, Nana's special food is Seafood with Soy Milk Soup Udon at MYR23.90 nett. For this month, it is Keema Curry Udon at the same price as last month's food.

This is a dry udon dish. From the photo, the curry is not apparent. Keema Curry Udon sauteed with caramelised onions and carrots with crispy vegetable salad with a poached egg. We are advised to mix well before enjoying this dish.

Creamy Smoky Salmon Udon

This dish is creamy but not cloying at all due to the smoky taste from the smoked salmon slices. I will have this dish again at Nana Green Tea from their lunch set menu - MYR21.90 nett for a main dish and drink.

Beef Sukiyaki Udon - MYR21.90 nett from the same lunch menu. The broth is slightly on the sweet side and there is a poached egg with runny yolk floating in the broth above - can you spot it?

The drinks that we chose from the lunch set menu - a glass of Azuki (Red Bean) Latte - very sweet and milky and a teapot of hot Karigane-Cha (green twig tea from stems and stalks of green tea plants).

MYR21.90 nett for a main dish and a drink from the lunch set menu (price in 2015). I hope they would not increase their prices for this new year as I found out that for 2016, a bowl of pan mee at a local coffee shop has increased its price by 50 cents from MYR5.50 to MYR6 (9%) and a cup of coffee has gone up from RM1.60 to RM1.70 (6%) . I hope come Chinese New Year, they don't increase the price again.

Hanamaru Udon

I mentioned in this post that I am going to try the udon next to Yoshinoya, Midvalley and I did.

Tori Dashi Udon (Udon in Chicken Soup) - MYR10.80 (price is inclusive of 6% GST). Ordered this because it included the egg. Shared by two.

The Udon noodle is soft but yet chewy.

Ocha and Matcha

We went to Nana's Green Tea at One Utama for our lunch one day and ordered a main meal that comes with a drink (MYR18.80++) each from their set menu.

Beef patty (you can opt for chicken patty) with rice, salad, shredded daikon (white radish) and miso soup. This set meal comes with a drink of your choice. The rice is quite firm so if you prefer soft rice, it is advisable to order another main dish without rice.

Light Matcha Tea (Hot) - if you want a hot drink, I think hot ocha tea is better than hot matcha tea because ocha tea is more fragrant. Matcha tea is made from green tea powder.

Manmaru Homemade Udon

Niku Udon (Beef Udon) - MYR16.90 - the beef is thinly sliced and is so tender and tasty. Will definitely eat this again.

Kamo Nanban Udon (Duck) - MYR15.90 - this smoked duck meat is very tender and tasty although it does not have the usual strong taste of duck. The raw leeks are crunchy and their mild onion-like taste complements the taste of the smoked duck. Will eat this next time.

Chicken Katsu Curry Udon - MYR16.90 - the curry is not sweet like the usual Japanese curry and it is also not as spicy as Indian curry so to me, it is neither here nor there and I will not eat it again. There are some pickled red vegetables in it. The fried chicken thigh has a strong chicken taste which I don't quite like.

Asari Seafood Nabe Udon (Clam Udon) - MYR18.90 - we thought that the broth for this udon dish is a clear broth but it turns out that it tastes like Penang prawn mee's broth but without the spiciness. We can taste what we think is ground prawn shells in the broth. Not going to order this again although the clams are quite fresh.

When it opened for business last year, it is a self-service eatery but now it has changed and offers table-service only. The udon is firm and not like the usual springy soft udon we are used to eating but we will still come here for its Niku Udon and Smoked Duck Udon. Although the food may seemed a bit on the pricey side when compared to Ori Udon (also in Midvalley mall) but it is worth paying a bit more because I think the udon portion here is larger and the texture of the udon is really different (firm).

Ori Udon

Ori Udon is a new Udon eatery in the Gardens Mall. It says "Fresh Handmade Udon" on its menu. To me, the udon is a bit on the soft side. I prefer it to be a little bit more chewy. Will come here to eat again if I want to eat something light in soup.

Two sets of udon:
Set 2 (MYR12.90) : Kitsune or Wakame Udon  (7.90) + Karaage (5)  + Green Tea (1.5)
Set 6 (MYR13.90): Chicken Char Siew Udon  (9.90) + Mini Salad (4) + Green Tea (1.5)
By adding up the ala carte prices, this means that by ordering from the set menu, we get the cup of Green Tea free of charge. The set that saves the most is Set 8 (please refer to the menu below).

Karaage (deep fried chicken)  close up. Ala carte price is MYR5.0 - Just this once I ate a whole piece of deep fried chicken with skin and all because I couldn't see where the skin ends and where the meat starts so I ended up consuming the whole thing. Fortunately it was very very crispy and only a small piece. My spouse ate the rest but removed a whole piece of fried skin and did not eat it.

Kitsune or Wakame Udon. Ala carte price is MYR7.90 - as can be seen above, they provide a lot of vegetables but only one piece of fried bean curd sheet with some seaweeds (I think).
