Soup Restaurant

Signature Dish - Samsui Ginger Chicken (Small portion) - MYR39.90 - Boneless chicken meat with smooth skins. Supposed to be wrapped with the lettuce provided with a spoonful of ginger dip. If you love to eat ginger and chicken, you would love to eat this dish.

Ah Kon Ginger Fried Rice (Small portion) - MYR17.90 - this fried rice has more ginger in it. If you want less ginger, you should order the Ah Por Ginger Fried Rice. We also ordered one bowl of plain rice - MYR2.20 to share.

Ah Kon Fan Shu leaves (Small portion) - MYR15.90 - stir fried with belacan. We requested it to be less salty and it was. If you prefer the sweet version, you could order the Ah Por Fan Shu leaves.

Double boiled Wai San and Ginseng soup  - MYR17.90 - tasty soup.

Beggar Bowl Rice with minced pork - MYR9.90 - the minced pork may look a bit raw but it is fully cooked.

Sabah pork noodle

We noticed this stall in a shop in Section 17, PJ selling Sabah pork noodle and wondered how it compared to local pork noodle so my spouse ordered a bowl. This broth is very clear with a slight peppery taste whereas local pork broth is quite murky with no peppery taste. Nevertheless this bowl of noodle is tasty with many slices of pork.

Antipodean Cafe

We reached Midvalley mall at 9.17am and were walking to Grand Harbour Restaurant to eat dim sum when we passed by Antipodean cafe and thought why not eat here instead. We have read so many good online reviews about Antipodean in BSC so now that they are here in Midvalley mall, we went for it.

Big breakfast - MYR20 - a slice of toast with butter, scrambled eggs, hash brown (potato), mushrooms, and bacon (it is either bacon or chicken/beef/pork sausage). We were deciding between this and All day breakfast which has all the above food items except for hash brown and mushrooms that are replaced by grilled tomatoes and baked beans. Mushrooms won over baked beans.

Scrambled eggs with salmon and toast - MYR20 - the portion of scrambled eggs is quite large so I took a while to finish it as I was full after eating half of it. Salad with balsamic vinegar on it tastes good.

Flat white - MYR9

Glasses of water are provided (foc) and the water is stored in glass bottles as shown in the above photo.

There is only one big menu for us to look at and decide on what to order. I find it quite difficult to read the white words on the huge board.

Store front

Limited seats are available so be prepared to wait for one.

We will be back to try the bacon, scrambled egg on croissant as this meal looked delicious when we saw the table beside ours having it.

Selamat Hari Raya ...

...to everyone who is celebrating Eid al-Fitr and Happy Long Weekend Holiday to the rest!

MyDulang @ Beef Rendang Set - MYR19.90 - shared by two.

There are two other choices for the MyDulang set - chicken rendang or chicken cooked with red sauce (creamy spicy tomato sauce) or better known in the Malay language as "Ayam Masak Merah". For all three sets, there is a choice of "Bandung Cincau" or fresh lemon tea drink. "Bandung" is a rose syrup mixed with milk drink. Cincau is grass jelly, usually made from a herb named "Mesona chinensis", in the mint family (Lamiaceae). An herb (American) vs a herb (British) - an interesting fact.

I chose "Bandung Cincau" since it is Hari Raya and drinking lemon tea just does not fit into the overall festive mood. My spouse ordered a regular cup of hot "teh tarik" - MYR3.80 from the ala carte menu.

Keropok lekur, beef rendang, sotong sambal, long bean with its own sambal, crackers, kangkung in sambal and tomato rice. Taste wise - good enough but not superb.

Actually I am not a fan of both the items above and so I forced myself to drink up and eat up so that both items do not go to waste. Pleased to say I cleaned both up but will not do this again - meaning I will not order anymore food sets that contain food items that I am not a fan of.

If the food items in the set are not enough, one can order the items separately from the special ala carte menu.

Oriental Cravings

Rice Wine Chicken Mee Sua - MYR22.90 - can't really see much from the photo but there were chicken pieces, fried egg, black fungus (黑木耳) with mee suah in the bowl. I think the price is due to the good rice wine that they used for this dish.

Cantonese Style Stir Fried Noodle (Hor Fun - Wat Tan Hor) - MYR15.90 - a good place to have this if you suddenly crave for wat tan hor while shopping here.

Cendol - MYR5.5 - doesn't look that nice but I can assure you that it is very tasty due to the "correct gula Melaka" used.

MYR6 - Prawn mee and mee hoon mixed. "Kang kong" (water spinach) is a must have here. Lots of protein from the egg, pork slices and small shrimps.

Dry curry mee

I was at a lost on what to order for lunch so in the end I ordered dry curry mee (MYR5 or MYR5.5 - I can't really remember, sorry).

The noodle was firstly mixed with thick sweet soy sauce and then the curry sauce with tou pok (bean curd puffs) was poured on top of it. So it is like eating two sauces in one - just too flavourful for my palate. There were also a few strips of chicken breast meat and some beansprouts.

Thai Red Curry

This time at Thai Kopitiam, we ordered the Thai red curry chicken rice meal (MYR8.90) that comes with a  deep fried egg with a runny yolk to share. It does not have the curry sauce like the Thai green curry chicken rice meal.

Just look at the runny yolk which my spouse loves!

Tub Tim Krob - MYR4.9, the red rubies are hidden under the jackfruit (nangka).

New Look

Din Tai Fung at the Gardens Mall has reopened for business after renovation. They moved the open kitchen to the other end like the above photo. It used to look like this. We ordered the dishes below to share because I was still full at that time.

Despite how it looks in this photo, this bowl of beef la mian (noodle) is very tasty. The chunky beef pieces are very tender with tendon in the beef. There are two pieces of beef tendons - MYR18

Stir Fried Nai Pak - MYR15

We also ordered a cup of hot tea (MYR2.50) and as the hot tea is refillable, I don't feel nice not ordering any drinks so I ordered a cup of iced tea (MYR2.50) when normally I won't order any drinks.

Hainan Tea Cafe

* Updated in May 2016, this eatery has long ceased operation at this location.

I noticed this new shop so decided to try it out.

Looked through the menu.
.
Got distracted by this very pretty pastel painting but finally placed our order.

Hainan Tea (Cold) - MYR4.90 - The tea taste is not strong so I think this price is a bit on the steep side

Nasi Lemak Chicken Rendang - MYR13.90 - The rice is quite tasty but the portion is smaller compared to those served by other modern kopitiam eateries. The piece of chicken is quite small too. Guess the price has factored in the renovation cost for this eatery.

Raw concrete walls as per the current trend.

The iron frame on the left I believe is supposed to have pots of green plants on it but then someone got tired of watering the plants so they have removed all the pots so no more plants now.

You can watch TV here.

It is also a bakery as it sells breads and cakes too.

Total Bill: MYR20.70 (2 pax - sharing)

Fish Fillet Noodle

Fish fillet with bittergourd mee hoon - MYR7 - some people may think this noodle is too bland but I have fine with it. I only wish there were more pieces of fish fillets.

Birthday at Red Box

Red Box members get to sing and eat for free for 7 days (3 days before and 3 days after their birthday and on their birthday itself) when accompanied by at least 1 paying adult at full price for one session daily. One can become an ordinary member by paying MYR5 on the spot and one can go everyday for all 7 days as long as one meets the requirement of having another paying adult.

So on Saturday, one day before my friend's birthday, the two of us went to Red Box The Gardens for the earliest session and were told that the buffet brunch session was on from 11am to 2pm and if the room was still available, we could use it for another hour until 3pm and the price was MYR30++ (10% service charge and 6% govt tax) so we said ok and asked for a non-smoking room.

Since we were there to sing, we were not that particular about the buffet spread which was just acceptable.

The above food was for  two. It has been a long time since I last ate french toasts so time to eat one now, drizzled with honey and I found it quite nice. The roti jala here was not soft enough for me and those two dim sums were soaked in sauce.

"Kon choy" (dried vege) soup, fish fillet, fried popiah, steamed egg, char keoy teow, rice (hidden below the ckt), one fried wanton, and one fried processed fish cake crab stick thingy. Two drinks - hot plum juice.

This two plates of food were for sharing too. Watermelons, oranges, raw vege, tiny coffee cupcakes, charcoal cake, peanut butter swiss roll, two chocolates mini tarts.

To our surprise, we were given this. It was a nice gesture from Red Box to wish my friend happy birthday so we ate the red hard boiled eggs after removing the red shells. The quail eggs were dyed black (I wonder why) and because they were so tiny, the black dye seeped through the shells so the egg whites were black too so we did not eat those.

For a total bill of MYR34.80, both of us get to eat some ok food and sing for 4 hours (11am to 3pm) so I think it is a pretty good deal. We did not include the MYR5 membership fee because we just pay once and we have been singing for free during our birthdays for 3 years now and will continue to do so as long as this deal is available.

Stingray Fish Curry

Economy rice meal of the day (chapfan) - MYR5.5 - a piece of stingray fish cooked in curry, stir fried chinese spinach (yin choy), and pumpkins stir fried with dried shrimp (hay bee). The stingray fish and pumpkin taste good.

This is a very good price and I believe this budget economy rice stall can offer this low price because the stall is located in a row of old shop houses. Name of the coffee shop: Wei Fatt at Jalan Lazat 1, Taman Bukit Indah.

Roti Telur

Roti telur - MYR1.80 to MYR 2 (price varies between eateries). Best eaten with dhal curry.

My friend ordered this glass of iced lime tea without sugar and I took a sip. To me, it tastes like the lime from Solero ice cream (green ice cream with white cream in the middle). I think they use lime essence instead of fresh lime.

Thai noodle

A bowl of Thai chicken noodle from Thai Kopitiam - MYR7.90 plus 5% service charge.

The noodle is like hor fun but thinner.

I was given these condiments to go with the noodles but I did not use any of them - fish sauce with chili, fish sauce, sugar and chili powder.
