Zang Zang Bao

About a month ago, I walked past a neighbourhood bakery and noticed a banner outside its shop promoting its latest chocolate product with the name "Dirty Bun" and thought nothing much of it except to wonder - why name something edible dirty. Then a few days after that, I was in another bakery in the city center and saw their chocolate product being named "Dirty Bun" too. What's going on - I asked myself and turned to Google.

It was then I found these two links: here and here - seems like "Zang Zang Bao" (脏脏包 where Zang means Dirty and Bao means Bun) is popular in Beijing where people will queue for 3 hours just to buy it. Unfortunately or fortunately there is no queue here but that did not stop bakeries from jumping onto the bandwagon.

I have not tried it yet and don't think I will be trying it because I do not like the idea of chocolate powder falling all over the place when I eat this bun. From what I read, Zang Zang Bao is a chocolate croissant covered with chocolate powder and filled with chocolate custard.

Last weekend, while doing my weekly grocery shopping in Midvalley Mall, I took note that two other bakeries have joined the race but there was no queue at all.

Is the taste worth MYR 6.50 ?

This popular bakery is now featuring Zang Zang Bao as its latest product. I did not check its price.

This is the banner of the neighbourhood bakery that caught my attention initially.

Baker Loft which is located in the shop lot that used to house Sea Nian (2016) and  Yau Hao Fook (2014). It just opened mid or end  of last year (mid or end 2017) if I am not mistaken.

McD Nasi Lemak Burger

It is about time that they have this special burger here. As I was having a cold, I asked my friend to try it out for me.

The fried boneless chicken thigh has coconut flakes in its crispy batter so we get the santan (coconut milk) taste. Apart from the chicken, there is a fried egg, slices of cucumber and onions with sambal sauce. My friend said it is worth a try but the chicken meat is too tender.

I think they should find a way to include peanuts and anchovies in this burger. Maybe by adding a piece of crisp (keropok) which has bits of peanuts and anchovies in it. As I prefer to eat beef, I hope that they will have a Nasi Lemak Beef Rendang Burger too.

This set costs MYR 16.95 nett.

WG Careful of Bones

My lunch set at Yuzu, The Gardens Mall: Salmon Nabe Set at MYR 30.30 nett. There are two portion of fruits on my tray because my friend gave me hers.

There are 4 big pieces of salmon with lots of napa cabbage, bean curd and mushrooms in the pot. I kept half for dinner without the broth. My only complaint is that the salmon pieces have many bones in them so I had to be very careful when eating them.

Total bill for 2 pax: MYR 54.80 nett.

WG Upgraded Look

Value Set Lunch at SoloMen with 4 choices of Ramen, 5 choices of side dish: 1) Gyoza 2) Mini Octopus 3) Salad 4) Sliced scallops 5) Fried Rice and  refillable green tea (Hot or Cold).

My lunch order: Shoyu Ramen (MYR 16.90 nett) with Gyoza and cold green tea. Good value for money. Of course I had to keep half for my dinner.

The bowl has 2 indentations for the chopsticks to rest on as shown above.

Solomen has improved on its exterior by changing its glass door to a wooden sliding door and putting up a Noren (暖簾) which is a traditional Japanese fabric divider hung in doorways. Wooden lattice has also been installed outside the glass walls as a privacy screen.

Bill for 3 pax: MYR 60.60 nett.

A closer look at the Noren and the wooden lattice.

I ordered the same lunch set - Shoyu Ramen (MYR 16.90 nett) on another visit but with hot tea and scallop side dish instead.

I believe these are the "skirt" of the scallops marinated in vinegar and sesame sauce. The slices are thin but quite tough to chew so I don't think I will order this side dish again. I will order the Gyoza side dish again next time or try the fried rice side dish.

Total bill for 4 pax: MYR 73.60 nett.

Vegetarian Lunch Box

My co-workers have been ordering vegetarian lunch boxes from Green Meadow in SS2 on a regular basis so they have their own reusable lunch multi compartment containers like the above. They told me that the food is tasty so I went to the shop to try it out.

I tasted the food and can vouch for them that "Less oil, salt and sugar" is true.

My lunch order: Red Yeast Mee Sua at MYR 15.55 nett and Pumpkin sweet corn sweet potatoes dessert at MYR 4 nett.

The Red Yeast Mee Sua has lots of vege and mushrooms in it. It is so tasty that I ended up drinking all the broth. The pumpkin dessert is not sweet at all and the staff informed us that we can request for it to be sweeter which we feel is not necessary.

My friend's set meal at MYR 16.60 nett with brown rice and a few side dishes that she chose.

Total bill for 2 pax: MYR 40.10 nett. This is the place to go when we want to eat lots of vegetables for lunch.

Steamed Dumplings

Found an eatery in Kuchai Entrepreneur Park that sells dumplings so went to try it out. Ordered a plate of chives dumplings at MYR 13.90 nett.

Can see the chives in the dumplings. I like the taste of the dumplings although I think they could be less salty.

There are 7 different types of fillings: 1. prawns, pork and cloud ears fungus 2. Beef and spring onions 3. celery and pork. I think I will try them all because I like to eat dumplings.

4. corns and pork 5. beans and pork 6. chives and pork 7. spring onions, beancurd and pepper

We also ordered a bowl of prawns wanton in soup at MYR 16.90 nett but we won't be ordering this again because we do not like the taste of the oil used for the soup. The taste is similar to a soup cooked with duck fat that I drank once before.

Shop front.
