Shrunk

Pulut kuning beef rendang (Turmeric glutinous rice with beef cooked with spices and coconut milk) - MYR9.90+ 6% GST which is MYR10.50 nett. While the price stays the same, the portion now is much smaller. You can compare this with the one I had at the end of last year. The glutinous rice portion is less and there is only 2 cubes of beef in the bowl. To be fair, this dish is listed under snacks so that is why the portion is small since it is supposed to be a snack.

Nasi Goreng Selasih (the Malay language) MYR21.70+ 6% GST (MYR23 nett) Fried Rice with Thai Basil/Sweet Basil. This portion is the same as before but they have replaced the shredded cabbage with sticks of raw cucumber and carrot.

We ordered a glass of hot honey ginger drink at MYR5.90+ 6% GST (MYR6.25 nett) which taste fine.

Total bill is MYR39.75 nett for two pax but they did not give me 5 cents back in change so the cost to me is MYR39.80 nett. I was not in the mood to argue so I did not ask them for the 5 cents.

Turmeric Glutinous Rice

Pulut Kuning Beef Rendang (Turmeric glutinous rice with beef cooked with spices and coconut milk) - MYR9.90+ 6% GST (no service charge)= MYR10.50 nett at Belanga. The small portion is just right for me and the beef rendang is tasty. I like to eat glutinous rice cooked this way too, just as I like to eat lo mai kai.

Update (28 February 2015 Sunday): price is still MYR10.50 nett with more raw vegetables (salad) this time. The beef rendang is a bit on the salty side but the glutinous rice (pulut) is a little bit too hard, I prefer it to be softer so maybe no more next time until I have forgotten about the taste. I felt too full after 2 hours that it was very uncomfortable for me.

Looks matter?

Teh Tarik Place at the Curve again.

Nasi Kerabu - MYR10.55 nett - good value.

Combo Set Lunch - 1 rice, 1 main, 1 vegetable, 1 glass of iced syrup for MYR10.90 nett since I chose mutton as the main. I chose brinjal (eggplant) as the vegetable and it was very, very salty but I finished it at the expense of my health just because I dislike wasting food.

Laksam

I believe Laksam is a Kelantan dish and refers to the noodle that is made from rice flour. The sauce is made from coconut milk and ground fish meat so the sauce is very rich and can be cloying if eaten too much.

This is how the Laksam noodles look like.

Update (15 February 2016 Monday): Price is MYR18.30 plus 6% GST (no service charge) = MYR19.40 nett. Apple Kasturi drink: MYR12.10 nett.

Get satiated very quickly so this dish has to be shared

Selamat Hari Raya ...

...to everyone who is celebrating Eid al-Fitr and Happy Long Weekend Holiday to the rest!

MyDulang @ Beef Rendang Set - MYR19.90 - shared by two.

There are two other choices for the MyDulang set - chicken rendang or chicken cooked with red sauce (creamy spicy tomato sauce) or better known in the Malay language as "Ayam Masak Merah". For all three sets, there is a choice of "Bandung Cincau" or fresh lemon tea drink. "Bandung" is a rose syrup mixed with milk drink. Cincau is grass jelly, usually made from a herb named "Mesona chinensis", in the mint family (Lamiaceae). An herb (American) vs a herb (British) - an interesting fact.

I chose "Bandung Cincau" since it is Hari Raya and drinking lemon tea just does not fit into the overall festive mood. My spouse ordered a regular cup of hot "teh tarik" - MYR3.80 from the ala carte menu.

Keropok lekur, beef rendang, sotong sambal, long bean with its own sambal, crackers, kangkung in sambal and tomato rice. Taste wise - good enough but not superb.

Actually I am not a fan of both the items above and so I forced myself to drink up and eat up so that both items do not go to waste. Pleased to say I cleaned both up but will not do this again - meaning I will not order anymore food sets that contain food items that I am not a fan of.

If the food items in the set are not enough, one can order the items separately from the special ala carte menu.

Nasi Goreng Selasih

The first time we ordered Nasi Goreng Selasih (Fried Rice with Thai Basil/Sweet Basil) MYR18.9 at Belanga and requested for the chicken wings that were served to be swapped with other parts of the chicken, we were told it was not possible to do so although we could see that there were other chicken parts  available in the trays behind the serving counter.

This time we ordered Nasi Goreng Selasih again and did not make any special request. To our surprise, we were given a piece of chicken thigh with drumstick instead of chicken wings. This makes us wonder why our request was turned down last time but there's no point asking now since they won't remember our previous visit.

Fried Rice with Thai Basil/Sweet Basil - MYR18.9 - a balanced meal with raw vegetables, chicken meat, rice and it is tasty too.

Nasi Tumpang

One of my favourite food at Belanga restaurant is Nasi Tumpang. There is a choice of fish curry (MYR8.90) or prawn curry (MYR9.9) and I often select the fish curry nasi tumpang.

Nasi Tumpang - Rice wrapped into a cone shape using banana leaf.

The rice is layered alternately with kerisik (toasted grated coconut), fish curry with a small piece of fish, omelette and sambal (a spicy condiment). Very tasty because I like to eat the compressed rice which is quite soft.

Breakfast set

Nowadays many restaurants offer breakfast sets and I was surprised to see that Belanga is doing the same too.

This is the breakfast set I ordered: Nasi Lemak with coffee - MYR5.90 and as I don't drink coffee, it is for my spouse.
My spouse ordered the "Nasi Kerabu Ayam Percik" meal MYR18.90 (Ayam percik = grilled chicken in a special herbs and spices sauce with coconut milk, Nasi kerabu = a Malay rice dish with raw veges and spices) . Total price: MYR27.30 inclusive of 10% service charge but no government tax.

Daily no more

This used to be my daily lunch during working days until I decided to boycott the place for being inconsistent when charging the price. For exactly the same food, sometimes the difference can be up to MYR2 so I decided to bring fruits and bread from home for lunch instead.

Raw vege

Name of dish: Assam Pedas Ikan Patin (the Malay language)
Patin fish ( Pangasius sp.), a type of freshwater silver catfish
Assam - Tamarind (Scientific name: Garcinia gummi-gutta)
Pedas - Hot and spicy
This meal costs MYR15.9 and comes with the assam fish dish (one slice of fish), white rice, a tiny piece of salted egg and raw vege (cucumber, long bean,  lettuce). I am used to eating veges such as four angled beans and lettuce raw but this is the only time I ate long beans totally raw. The assam sauce is more salty than spicy. It is also not very sour as the saltiness overpowered the sour taste. The raw vegetables tend to balance out the salty taste a bit. I do not know what to do with the extra sauce. I don't think they expect me to consume all of it so I left most of it - such a waste. There are some lady fingers and red chillis in the assam sauce as well which I ate. Do have to be careful when eating the fish to pick out all the tiny bones at the fin area. Can't comment on the chilli dip as I did not touch it. The rice is on the dry side with hardened bits on the surface.

Name of dish: Nasi Goreng Selasih (the Malay language) MYR18.9
Fried Rice with Thai Basil/Sweet Basil
On the menu, it did not specify which part of the chicken will be included in this meal but there was a picture of this dish and the part displayed was not a piece of chicken wing so we did not ask about this when we placed the order. Then when we asked for it to be changed, the person-in-charge said sorry, they cannot change it. There were clearly other parts of the chicken available as we can see from over the counter so we just assumed that only chicken wings are included for this dish and we did not bother to enquire further as we were hungry and just wanted to start eating our meal. Next time we will be smarter and ask in detail before placing the order as we prefer not to eat chicken wings. If you don't like the taste of sweet basil then you know what to do.

Name of drink: green apple kasturi MYR9.9 (limau kasturi = calamansi)
A refreshing slightly sour drink. The strips in the glass are ginger strips giving the drink a tangy taste. We forgot to ask for no sugar so as this drink is sweet, I think they added a bit of syrup to it because I don't think green apple can be this sweet. As for me, I did not order any drink for myself.

I have seen Groupon deals for this restaurant but did not buy any coupons so the total price is MYR49.15 inclusive of 10% service charge (no government tax). Credit card payment accepted above a certain amount (not sure how much).
