WG Unbelievable

My lunch of 3 xiao long bao and some prawns fried rice at Din Tai Fung, Midvalley Mall.

My friend wanted to eat at Wendy's at Midvalley Mall but it has closed down so we went to Din Tai Fung and ordered Prawns Fried Rice at MYR 21.60+ (MYR 22.90 nett after 6% SST) and a basket of xiao long bao to share. There are 7 prawns in this fried rice.

6 xiao long bao at MYR 14.5+ (MYR 15.37 nett). It is better value for money to buy the 10 xiao long bao at MYR 23.20+ (MYR 24.60 nett) but we did not want to eat that many bao since it was only two of us so we settled for 6 instead.

Total bill for two pax is MYR 38.25 nett (MYR 19.125 nett each).

The many selections of Xiao Long Bao.

I have eaten Truffle Xiao Long Bao many years ago so I am not going to order them again. I also would give the chicken xiao long baos a miss because chicken is my last resort. I only eat chicken when I have nohing else to eat.

The many selections of fried rice. Wow! MYR 37.20+ (MYR 39.43 nett) for a plate of pork chop and shrimp fried rice. Nearly MYR 40 for a plate of fried rice with pork chop, I wonder who is willing to pay this amount of money for fried rice with one piece of pork chop.

All of them look tasty but the price is similar to the prices that hotels charge for fried rice, I believe (or are hotel prices much higher than these prices?).

I am surprised to see this Prawn with Salted Egg dish because this item is not available in Din Tai Fung, Taiwan. I guess the menu here is localised. I may order this dish one day to compare it with my favourite salted egg prawns at Canton-i / Dragon-i.

*** Goodbye again Wendy's ***

The branch in Midvalley / The Gardens Mall which opened around Aug 2018 has closed around March 2019 (in less than 1 year) with no official announcements about the closing.

Bought this Junior Mushroom Melt burger (MYR 6.80+ 6% SST = MYR 7.20 nett) in Dec 2018.

Quite acceptable.

T2014 Su Hung Restaurant

Most Taiwan Tour packages would include a visit to Din Tai Fung, a restaurant famous for their xiao long bao. Due to the long queue at Din Tai Fung, locals would prefer to go to Su Hung Restaurant 蘇杭 instead. Knowing this, we also went to Su Hung in Taipei to have our meals.

酸汤鱼 (Suān tāng yú) - Fish in Sour Soup - TWD 580 (price in 2014). About MYR 70 now. Very appetising because it is sourish and a bit spicy. The fish has been deboned so no bones at all, just slices of fish meat, very nice. We ordered this soup for both the times we ate at this restaurant.

Squid ink xiao long bao - TWD150 (about MYR18). They look very black but the colour is all natural colour from the squid ink.

So black until we cannot see the fillings. The squid ink did not have a distinctive taste.

Promo brochure

九層塔小籠湯包 - Jiǔcéngtǎ xiǎo lóng tāng bāo -  Xiao Long Bao with Basil Leaves and Pork Meat fillings. 九層塔 literally means nine level tower and is referring to the Basil Leaves. TWD150. The basil leaves are also used in the bao skin.

I like the strong taste of the basil leaves. Not for those who do not like the taste of basil.

Promo for the Basil Leaves Xiao Long Bao.

Petola or Luffa Xiao Long Bao. TWD150. From the photos, one can tell that there is soup in the xiao long bao.

Can see the petola or luffa and prawn fillings here. We can eat many of this and not get satiated because the taste is light. Compare this to the luffa xiao long bao that I had in Din Tai Fung, Taipei 101 during my trip to Taipei before this trip.

上海砂鍋菜飯 - - Shanghai Casserole Vegetable Rice - TWD160 (about MYR19). The crunchy vegetable bits added another texture to the otherwise soft rice. Very tasty.

小鱼山蘇 - Xiǎo yú shān sū - this vegetable is bird's nest ferns (Asplenium nidus). The leaves were stir fried with little fishes which I think is a type of anchovy. TWD180 (about MYR22). The leaves were tender as I believe they only use the young leaves of the ferns.

醉雞 - Zuì jī - Drunken Chicken -  TWD240 which is about MYR29 now.

芝麻酒釀湯圓 - Zhīma jiǔniàng tāngyuán - Sesame glutinous rice balls (tang yuan) in fermented rice wine. TWD120 (about MYR15.50). The fermented rice wine is quite sweet. We can taste the natural alcohol content in it and there were bits of fermented rice in the wine. The wine is the product of the natural fermentation of the rice.

The price (2014) seems reasonable.

Beef Tendon

\
This is what I wanted to eat when my friend was eating Yoshinoya beef rice - Braised Beef La Mian at Din Tai Fung, MidValley MegaMall - MYR20.50 - for the two pieces of soft beef tendon in the noodle and that one piece of very tender beef with tendon in the meat. This bowl will last me till end of the year.

Can't eat here and not order the Xiao Long Bao so we ordered a small portion of 6 for MYR11.20

Then I saw this - seems like a new item on the menu - so I ordered a plate because I have a weakness for red bean.

Red Bean Rolls - MYR6.50 for two. Not oily at all and though it is sweet, it is not very, very, very sweet so eating one piece should be fine, not cloying at all. The total bill came up to MYR47.20 after 10% service charge and 6% government tax including a cup of bottomless hot chinese tea (MYR2.50) that only one of us drank.

Fully occupied for brunch on Sunday until we had to ask for the tea and ginger condiment when there were no signs of them long after all our main food were served.

Luffa

Luffa or Loofah (Luffa aegyptiaca or Luffa acutangula) is eaten as a vegetable when it is still not fully developed because when it has fully ripened, it is too fibrous to be eaten. Whenever I visit Taiwan, I will eat dumplings filled with luffa (Luffa Xiao Long Bao) because it is simply delicious.

Din Tai Fung branch in Taipei 101. Just look at the people in white hard at work making dumplings.

Luffa Shrimp Xiao Long Bao (dumplings) 10 in a basket (TWD 320/MYR36.5). This item is not available in Din Tai Fung branch  in Malaysia.

Be careful when you bite into the dumpling as the soup will flow out. Usually I just put the whole dumpling into my mouth before biting it. It is small enough.

The dumpling is filled with tender succulent luffa pieces. It is scrumptious with a light sweet taste found only in fresh vegetable.

Among the pale jade luffa pieces, you will find one small prawn which enhances the taste of the Shrimp Loofah Xiao Long Bao. I would say that this is a healthy and delicious dish.
