2 Ringgit Mee Siam

On Saturday 11.mar.2023, we went to Golden Chopsticks and 126 Kopitiam coffee shops to buy lunch for the Elderlies and ourselves. In the evening, he went alone to Fatty Mixed Rice to buy chapfan dinner for the Elderlies and himself.

3.19 pm - this is the MYR 2 Mee Siam I bought from a stall in front of Golden Chopsticks coffee shop. It is only a tiny bit spicy. Overall taste is sweet. The Mee Hoon is soft so I like it.

3.19 pm - food that I bought:
MYR 2 Mee siam in a paper packet.
From 126 Kopitiam:
2 braised eggs MYR 1.5 each
5 ytf items at MYR 1.9 each, total 9.5 for 2 omelette chives ytf, 1 deep fried chives fish paste suigao, 1 deep fried bean curd sheet chives fish paste and 1 taopok with chives fish paste.

3 ytf items added to the Mee Siam.

5.42 pm - he asked me to eat the above remaining small block of anchor salted butter so I ate it with one slice of bread. Is quite salty.

11.33 am - his chapfan no rice lunch from Golden Chopstick coffee shop.

5.32 pm - his dinner of chapfan no rice and foc watercress soup from Fatty Mixed Rice which he went out alone to buy.

3.04 pm - I ate this 100g bag of raw kale, arugula and lettuce.

Price Up

On Thursday 9.mar.2023, went to Hiong Mei chapfan shop and Choy Kei coffee shop to buy lunch for the Elderlies and ourselves.

12.04 noon - we shared this small pack of 3jc soup mihun horfun from Choy Kei coffee shop. The price now is MYR 9 nett. Two years ago the price was MYR 6.50 so it is time to eat good food now or else next year, the prices will be even higher.

11.41 am - Left: a small portion of seafood mihun soup MYR 10 nett. A year ago, the price was MYR 9 nett. I requested the soup to be put together with the mihun because I like my mihun to be very soft soaked in the soup.

Right: the 3jc mihun horfun soup shown in photo 1. We also bought one small pack of wanton Mee soup with wanton and siew yuk MYR 8.5 for one Elderly's lunch.

5.09 pm - from Hiong Mei chapfan eatery, he bought two packs of chapfan no rice for one elderly and himself. He ate the above chapfan during early dinner time at about 5 pm.

Thick vs Thin Mee Hoon

On Saturday 1.jan.22, we went to buy breakfast and lunch for the Elderlies.

12.40 noon - this is thick curly meehoon. This meehoon will stay springy forever even though it is soaked in soup for a long time. Therefore, fish head Mee hoon usually uses this thick curly meehoon.

1.14 pm - this is the normal meehoon which is thin and will soak up all the soup in the bowl. I ate this remaining meehoon from the previous day with pickled green chilis.

12.50 noon - his lunch of sui gao dumplings soup wanton noodles MYR 7 nett from Million ocean coffee shop.

Fav Seafood Mee Hoon

Wednesday 2 Sep 2020 d169  - 10.04 am - this is our favourite seafood Mee Hoon from choy Kee coffee shop at MYR 8 nett.

11.55 am - my portion with one scoop of soup as per my request.

1.36 pm - one curry puff and one kaya puff at MYR 2.10 nett each. Sharing these two puffs for lunch.

1.51 pm - my half of kaya puff. I didn't eat the curry puff which I was told was very oily. This kaya puff from choy Kee tastes sweeter than sweet Heng kaya puff and has more fillings but the price is higher by 40 cents.

4.56 pm - shared dinner of braised pork trotters and one hard boiled egg with rice bought from Lucky Alley coffee shop at MYR 10 nett. Just another takeaway day.

Pepper Soup Mee Hoon

Takeaway Pepper Soup Mee Hoon at MYR 8.50 nett to eat at home. It has pork balls, pork slices, pork stomach and intestines.

Good to see that the coffee shops adhere to the restrictions not to have people dining in by removing the chairs from the tables.

Another coffee shop has removed all the chairs too.

9 meatballs

Whenever we need to go to MyTown Mall, we would go at 9 am to ensure we find a parking spot. Then we would buy the combo 3 at Ikea cafeteria to have a snack and proceed to look for proper lunch. One day, we walked through the whole of MyTown Mall at around 10.30 am to find that most eateries were not opened yet so we ended up at Go Noodle.

A bowl of noodle and a hot ginger tea for my friend. I just nibble off the bowl and took a sip of the tea. Both pork tendon balls and the pork mushroom balls are flavourful but the mushroom taste has an edge over the tendon balls.

The mushroom pork ball noodles (soup) costs MYR 12.50++ (10% service charge and 6% SST = MYR 14.50 nett) and we added a serving of pork tendon balls at MYR 3.50++ (MYR 4.06 nett) so this bowl of noodles with 9 meatballs costs MYR 16.56 nett. The ginger tea costs MYR 4.50++ (MYR 5.22 nett).

Total price is MYR 23.80 nett for 1 pax.

Go Noodle House at MyTown Mall.

Another day at MyTown Mall and we ended up at Go Noodle House again. They ran out of grouper fish slices so we had to make do with fish paste (yu wat) though we prefer to eat grouper fish slices. Truth be told, I would rather eat fries than noodles in soup but my companions outvoted me.

This is my must-eat whenever I am at MyTown Mall. Just need to walk over to Ikea cafe to buy this sausage in a bun and put mustard all over it. The ala carte price is MYR 2 nett for one.

After SST

Hailam Kopitiam Bukit Jalil is one of our regular lunch place. After 1 Sep 2018, a bowl of cendol costs MYR 5.19++ (10% service charge and 6% SST = MYR 6.01 nett) and a cup of hot coffee costs MYR 3.68++ (MYR 4.26 nett).

Our favourite plate of mee siam costs MYR 10.85++ (MYR 12.58 nett) which is a little bit lower than the price with GST which is MYR 12.70 nett back in Nov 2015. The mee siam still tastes good with the taste of soybean paste (dou ban jiang / 豆瓣酱) and the texture of the mee hoon is soft but not mushy.

Total bill for 2 pax is MYR 22.85 nett.

Peranakan Place

Mee Siam - MYR12.90++ (10% service charge and 6% GST = MYR15.05 nett. This Mee Siam tastes as good as my favourite mee siam but is not as sweet, more to savoury. In fact, I prefer mee siam to be more savoury than sweet. Portion is just right for me.

Other food ordered by my friends. I did not have any drinks.

Peranakan Place at Nu Sentral adjoining KL Sentral. Very colourful words.

New Menu

We visited Tea Garden at Sri Petaling recently and found that they have a new menu now.

My order - Dry Mee Siam (plain with only beansprouts) at MYR4.50 nett. I find it too spicy so I must remember not to order this next time.

We also ordered other items so the total bill is MYR23.80 nett for 2 pax.

Sabah Giant Garoupa

From the "Giant Garoupa Fish" stall, we bought a bowl of Sabah Giant Garoupa Mee Hoon Soup at MYR28 nett. There are about 7 slices of Garoupa Fish that are fresh and without any strong unpleasant fishy taste. Other ingredients are tomatoes, pickled vegetable and white tofu. There is no milk in the broth unlike those KL style fish noodles which is fine with us but we would prefer the broth to be less murky and less oily.

This is the menu for this stall. Apart from dishes with Sabah Giant Garoupa, they also serve chicken mushroom meals.

Here is a close up photo of the Sabah seaweed pickles. The white translucent things that look a bit like sea corals in the photo above are the Sabah seaweeds. They are somewhat crunchy.

al fresco

Guess the price of all the above food? Only MYR4! The Teh Tarik (pulled tea) drink is MYR1 and each of the egg prata (roti telur) costs MYR1.50 only. So so affordable.

But you need to sit under the trees by the roadside like in the above photo. Could you eat in comfort?

There are a few stalls serving food in this area, along the walkway of some shops which have not opened in the early morning yet.

On another visit, we ordered a bowl of fish slices with meehoon in clear noodle soup with lots of ginger in the soup for only MYR7 with many slices of fish meat (Sang Yu aka haruan aka snakehead fish - not dory). Delicious! This bowl would be more than MYR10++ elsewhere.

Maggi Mee Goreng (Stir fried instant noodle) - MYR2.50 nett
Guess we could still find affordable food if we are not picky about the ambiance.

Mee Hoon Sotong

Mee Hoon Sotong (Squid) - MYR4, the mee hoon is soft and the gravy tastes like the gravy of wat tan hor which I believe is the taste of stir fried garlic with soy sauce. The squid is somewhat crunchy.

Must order this from Stall 787

Pasar Besar Seremban (Seremban's Main Market)'s food court

It is on the upper floor of the market

2nd Time Wiser

My lunch gang decided to go to the "bad pasta" place again because they actually like eating the pasta there so I ordered the chicken noodles in clear soup this time.

Tiny cubes of chicken meat in clear soup with cabbage and a mix of mee hoon and kway teow noodle - MYR6.90 plus 5% service charge (MYR7.25 in total). Well this is better than the pasta I ate previously because the mee hoon is very soft and the soup is not oily at all.

Needed?

Does this bowl of mee hoon really need to have deep fried pork lard in it? I will have to remember to request for the pork lard to be excluded next time as I don't eat them and it would be wasted in my bowl.

No appetite?

When I don't feel like eating, I will order this bowl of plain soup mee hoon with fish meat balls and some slices of fish cake - MYR5.5 as it is easy to eat and quite tasty too.

Just Carb

Today at the morning market, I bought the following food items. Each packet costs only MYR 2. I ate one quarter portion from each of the packet because the rest were eaten by my family and was very full but extremely thirsty for the rest of the day. Despite all these, I find the food quite tasty and sometimes I have cravings to eat them.

Glutinous rice with peanuts and anchovies.

Noodles with a bit of bean sprout.

Mee hoon with beansprout, peanuts and anchovies.
