Soon Hing

One Sunday, we were in SS2, PJ, intending to eat at Soong Kee, PJ but we could not find it as it has relocated so we ate at Soon Hing instead. We then noticed this Madam Leow eatery serving Kueh Chap Penang but they were closing for the day so we plan to visit it another day to try the Kueh Chap.

So the two of us just ate these - Lo Mai Kai MYR 5.50 nett, Egg Tart MYR 4.20 nett (for 1 portion of 2 tarts) and one bowl of sui gao dumplings soup (5 dumplings) at MYR 6.80 nett (without noodles). They taste decent enough so we don't mind eating here again if there are nothing else we wish to eat in this area.

Total for two pax is MYR 17.50 nett.

Found this Soong Kee SS2 relocation notice on their fb. They moved away from SS2 PJ on 18 December 2017.

Kopi Time Cafe

Nasi Lemak with deep fried mackerel at MYR 12.20+ (6% SST, MYR 12.95 nett) with a free drink. The fish is salty but still acceptable and tasty.

Of these four types, I prefer the one with mackerel.

Bill for two pax sharing 1 set meal: MYR 12.95 nett.

Kampong Kravers Atria

I have seen this eatery, Kampong Kravers in IOI City Mall, if I am not mistaken but it is not as big as this branch in Atria I believe.

I thought they sell curry puffs only but here, they have lunch and dinner set meals.

I wanted to try their lamb masala curry puffs at about MYR 3 each because they are not ubiquitous.

In the end, I just bought one curry chicken puff for MYR 1.90+ (6% SST, MYR 2 nett).

Just one curry puff sitting in a brown paper bag.

Lots of curry potatoes in the fillings and I did not detect any chicken meat. Perhaps I need to scrutinize the fillings to find it. Puff layered pastry instead of short crust pastry. I will be back to try the lamb masala curry puff since Old Chang Kee does not sell mutton curry puffs anymore.

WG Naughty Nuri

The staff suggested for the two of us to share a plate of fried rice, a plate of pork loin or pork chop and the roast pork salad. We didn't want to order 3 items so we just shared the fried rice with pork chop instead of pork loin.

2 pieces of pork chop in one serving at MYR 15++ (10% service charge and 6% SST, MYR 17.40). The sauce tastes like spicy sweet marmite. The pork chop is thick and juicy with some parts that are quite tough but for people with strong teeth, this is not an issue.

Fried rice at MYR 15++ (MYR 17.40 nett) which we requested to be not spicy. I ate a bit of rice and let my friend have a larger share and she asked me to take most of the roast pork home for others to eat as both of us just tried one piece each.

Lunch bill for 2 pax: MYR 34.80 nett.

Egg is Vege

We did a test. We went back to the mixed rice stall at Popcorn Food Hall, Midvalley and bought a bigger piece of Soong Fish (松鱼) with rice and steamed egg just to see how much they would charge us.

Previously just a small piece of Soong fish costs us MYR 5.80 nett. This time the egg was counted as Vege so this dish was charged according to the price list of 1 meat and 1 vege so it is MYR 8.50 nett which means the rice and egg is only MYR 2.70 nett from deducting 5.80 from 8.50 so it is better to buy according to the price list instead of just taking 1 piece of fish.

Just as Libby said, this fish does have a slight "earth" taste as some would described it. The egg was smooth and tasty with fragrant garlic oil poured over it after it has been steamed.

The mixed rice stall occupies 3 stalls as in stall 1,2 and 3.

Crispy Nian Gao Sandwich

My friend went to ICC Pudu again just to buy these deep fried snacks.

The deep fried bananas at MYR 1.50 nett each have all sold out so we only managed to buy deep fried nian gao at MYR 1.80 nett each.

The "Nian Gao" - 年糕 (chinese new year sticky cake) which is made from glutinous rice flour and brown sugar is sandwiched between a slice of sweet potatoes and a slice of yam, coated in batter and then deep fried. Best eaten hot or warm before it has cooled down.

Tab Tim Krob

I can't believe that for lunch, I only had this bowl of Red Ruby dessert at Tiffin's, Midvalley Mall. It was just ok, nothing to go back for.

Vanilla Mille Crepe

It has been a long time since I last ate Mille Crepe at Nadeje and Humble Beginnings. I refrain from eating them as between every layer of crepe is a layer of cream so the calories are very high but for a buy 1 get 1 free offer, I just throw caution to the wind and got 2 slices at the price of 1 slice at MYR 13.90 nett.

Opening Offer - Buy 1 Get 1 Free - at Midvalley Mall.

Milli crepe - oreo, tiramisu, salted caramel, original flavours but there are more flavours listed in their menu which I cannot remember.

Sadly it was not meant to be "Love at first bite". The cream is not as light as the other brands that I have eaten.

Tiramisu and Salted Caramel - 3 of us shared these 2 slices of cake.

Well, for just MYR 13.90 nett for 2 slices of Milli Crepe cakes, I am not complaining but I will not be buying again because I am going back on track and avoiding Milli Crepe because of the calories.

WG Little Sand

My lunch group wanted try out a new eatery in Jaya One, PJ which is located next to Kechara eatery. It occupies the unit that was vacated by Go Noodle when it moved upstairs to a bigger unit.

This is the set lunch menu. I did not want to eat rice nor noodle but the ala carte menu is having the same main meals of rice and noodles but without the dessert and drinks so I just randomly chose a set thinking I could keep the rice for other meals. Please click on the above menu for a larger image and see what would you choose instead.

Continuation of the set lunch menu. They also have a set dinner menu which is quite similar to the set lunch menu except that they have replaced the noodles dishes with rice dishes.

Other than the main dish, the set lunch consists of 3 freebies as above:
1. snack of the day which is just a pack of peanuts and
2. either yakult or ice cream or dessert (tong sui) and
3. Hot or cold drinks of tea, coffee, sour plum, coca cola, green tea, lemon grass green apple and add MYR2 for Mojito (I suspect this Mojito does not have rum in it but I did not ask to confirm).
I selected tong sui which is red bean sweet soup to be packed for takeaway which they allow and cold sour plum without syrup which I found to be still sweet from the sour plum.

When my order was served, I knew I made a mistake in selecting this dish - L9: Braised Pork Rice at MYR 13.90+ (10% service charge, MYR 15.30 nett) because the meat was cut into such tiny cubes that I could not even see them and I spotted fatty pieces floating in a lot of oily gravy. What a horrible sight.

Fortunately, when digging in there, I found half a hard boiled egg which I ate and some tiny pieces of mushroom. I then gave the rest of the braised so-called meat in gravy to my friend who gave me her portion of pineapple in the portion of pickled vege (acar) as she does not eat pineapples due to its cooling properties according to TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine).

Total price for 5 portions of set lunch: MYR 82.70 nett.

Fish and Pickled Cabbage Soup

We visited Awa Mee Bar, Midvalley again to try the fish and pickled cabbage soup. This time we chose option C which is rice (not written in the menu but the staff advised us to write option C on the order chit).

We also added one portion of meat ball (bursting pork balls) at MYR 3++ so our meal is MYR 19.90++ plus MYR 3++ resulting in a total of MYR 22.90++ (10% service charge, 6% SST -> MYR 26.56 nett). For dessert, we had a bowl of Awa beancurd aka tofu fah at MYR 5.90++ (MYR 6.84 nett).

The 4 pieces of fish fillets are deep fried and they taste good. The staff told me that the fish is "Fei Chui Yu" (Fei Chui means Jade) when I asked. I googled and found out it is Jade Perch fish (Scortum barcoo) which is commonly found in Australia (fresh water fish).

I like the pieces of yam in this soup and that the soup is sour so it is very appetising but I don't like that the soup also taste very salty which could be due to the fact that it is very sour. Therefore I won't be ordering this soup again although I like the sour taste and also the pieces of fish. Perhaps next time I will just add deep fried fish fillets to another type of soup.

The photo of this item in the menu sure looks very enticing.

The beancurd (tofu fah) is served cold and is very, very soft and smooth. It tastes delicious with the fragrant brown sugar syrup.

Total price for 2 pax sharing a meal is MYR 33.40 nett.

Awa Mee Tonkotsu Soup

Awa Mee Bar, Midvalley Mall officially opened for business in September, 2018. It was only in October 2018 that we managed to have lunch there.

Both of us ordered one meal from the fixed menu to share - Superior Tonkotsu Noodle Soup at MYR 16.90++ (10% service charge and 6% SST = MYR 19.60 nett) with a cup of ginseng tea at MYR 6.90++ (MYR 8 nett). Inside the bowl of rice noodles are deep fried enoki mushrooms and deep fried fish strips which my friend likes.

The pot of soup has the following ingredients - Sliced Pork Belly, Minced Pork, Pork Ball, Dumplings made of fish paste and napa cabbage. If you like the taste of pork, then you will like this soup. I felt just a slight thirst after drinking this soup so I am not sure whether it contains MSG or not.

Item: 112 is the item we ordered in the menu. If one wants more ingredients, one can add fish ball, meat ball (those bursting meat balls), abalone slices, beancurd sheets, enoki mushrooms, tofu, tomato and carb stick for MYR 3++ per portion or prawns, pork belly slices, fish slices, clams, lotus root at MYR 6++ per portion.

For the noodles, one can select A. Yellow noodle, B. Rice Noodle or C. Plain white rice which is not listed in the menu. One can add another portion of noodle at MYR 8.90++ or rice at MYR 1.50++.

Instead of ordering from the fixed menu, one can create your own combination of soup and ingredients as shown in the photo above.

This eatery serves only 5 types of soup:
1. Spicy Soup (which is not for me since I cannot stand very spicy food)
2. Tonkotsu Soup (for those who likes the taste of pork)
3. Seafood Soup (I may try this one day)
4. Stewed Fish and Pickled Cabbage Soup (I have tried this soup on another day and found it to be too salty because it is too sour).
5. Mushroom Soup (don't think I will try this).

Which soup do you think will taste the best?

Total bill for 2 pax sharing 1 meal is MYR 27.60 nett.

Shopfront - Awa Mee Bar, Midvalley Mall

It is located in between Waroeng Penyet and Liang Sandwich Bar on the top floor of Midvalley Mall.
