Possible solution?

Thank you all for your comments. More info about the situation shown in the photos below. The crowded area is inside a station so you can't turn back to call a cab, you have to exit the station first. :)

I don't think this is the norm at this station because I exit at this station frequently at this time. This is just a special case.

In reply to the RG's comment below, the people from B mostly came from D, not A. There is an escalator moving downwards from the train platform (area D) feeding people into the area B. So from the photo, would you say this situation is a queue or a crowd (still referring to RG's comment below)?

Those people from B, they all came from A isn't it? I don't see any entrance near B. So I would probably suck it up and go to B to queue. The same, it really depends on whether the situation is a queue or a crowd where many lines of people congregate into one place."

D shows the escalator feeding people into area B

The way I see it, people from A do not have a need to go against the flow to get to B because if they do, they will be causing more congestion by going against the flow. The people from A should just wait at the point C to merge into the queue just like the cars in the photo above.

The cars in O must let the cars from P into the queue so that the cars from P have a chance to move forward and not be stuck there forever waiting for traffic from O to be cleared which it never will. What I observed in UK is that the cars in O will alternate with the cars from P to merge into one lane and traffic would be smooth flowing.

People here also should move faster just like people in Shanghai. Before I could even blink my eyes, the people around me in Shanghai have all gotten into the train the moment the doors to the train opened and they move so fast that I could not believe it to this day. Here, people move slowly at a leisure pace and some are also under the impression that they must form proper queues so they walk against the flow thus causing more congestion and they also do not alternate to allow people to merge into the area to exit the station faster so they cause the crowd to build up.

So please move faster, allow people to merge alternately and do not walk against the flow when one faces a situation like this in order to ease the congestion. That is my opinion.

  1. Yes, I do wish people would stop yakking away or being so engrossed in their smartphones and MOVE!!!

Same thing at the traffic lights - by the time the first one or two cars move, the lights would have turned red already. Never think of the line of cars behind them! So annoying!!!

    1. It is even worse when people hold a conference at the mouth of staircase or escalators oblivious to the fact that they are blocking other people.

  2. Aaa hah! So the best is still wait slowly and merge into C if I'm coming from A.. Yes I agree with you people can just move and walk faster, and not dilly dally and think the road belongs to their grandfather, hehe..

  3. I tink Malaysian need to be educated on that...Coz too huge crowd can cause accident too. And worse still, i dun see our train stations here have officer standby to control crowds or passenger/human traffic flow...

    1. I agree with you that there should be officers there to direct the people.

  4. I never like to use train when I am in KL. Crowded and people is practically very rough. No no.

I like the train ride in Korea and Singapore. Thailand was alright since we gone during low peak hour. Only been to these 3 countries' train services.

    1. You did not use the LRT train at all when you were in KL?

  5. Yes, every one can just be more considerate and move faster!

  6. I have to agree with you! I missed commenting on your previous post. I would have said A should merge at C. You are right that Malaysians are crawlers. They walk/move at a leisurely pace and perhaps I am atypical, I always politely cut ahead so that I can walk faster.

    1. You would be right at home in Hong Kong or Shanghai where people really move very fast! :D

  7. If that is the case then definitely is not a queue but a crowd, then I agree with what you said, if you try to move from A to B, it will cause more troubles.
The cars one, not just UK, basically Europe and US also have the same common courtesy, it is the Asian countries that don't have these. In fact lately I feel there are more and more troll drivers in Malaysia, driving recklessly in small and congested roads, but driving like tortoise in an open and empty road, and worse is they will swerve left and right to prevent you from overtaking them. I wonder if I am the only one who noticed this trolling trend..

    1. Yes, yes! I have noticed this but I did not know that the term for it is troll driver. Drive like mad person to squeeze in front of our car so we slow down to let it cut in front of us but after that slow to a crawl - what happened to the mad reckless driver before?

  8. Thanks Mun, for very interesting posts. I am never comfortable with big crowds, imagine having to go through this everyday. I will be so stressed.
