WG Baba Low Mee Siam

We went to the BON Estates building which is opposite Bangsar Shopping Center on Jalan Maarof, Bangsar with the intention to eat at The Good Co. eatery, only to discover to our dismay that they have moved to APW, Bangsar. My friend said it is very difficult to find a parking space at APW so we did not go there but went to Baba Low's which is nearby.

Back in Nov, 2014, we were told that Mee Siam was sold out so we ordered Noodle Soup. During our visit, my friends noticed that many customers were eating Mee Siam so both of them ordered a portion each at MYR 7.5 nett. It has two types of eggs - half a hard boiled egg and a few strips of thin omelette, slices of fish cake, sambal, strips of cucumber, and a lime.

Last year (2018), we ordered Pai Tee so this time, two of us ate one popiah at MYR 5.50 nett each.

This popiah wrapper (skin) is very similar to a pancake or crepe because it is doughy, soft and much thicker than the usual thin popiah skin. My friend cannot get used to it and so she removed the skin from 3 segments and left them uneaten. I finished my popiah because I like to eat doughy pancakes. The jicama is cooked with fermented soybeans paste (taucu) as I found some fermented soybeans in the roll. I am ok with this popiah but will not order it again because I don't like the jicama that is too soggy.

Apart from the popiah, I also ate this bowl of curry chicken without any rice because that piece of potato is enough to fulfill my carbs quota. There are about 3 pieces of chicken meat on bones. The curry does not have much coconut milk but has a strong taste of cloves as it is Nyonya Curry.

I found 3 cloves (bunga cengkih -  Syzygium aromaticum) in my bowl of curry which explain the strong taste of cloves.

Total price for 3 pax is MYR 40 nett. An average of MYR 13.33 nett per pax. I spent just MYR 14 nett for one popiah and a bowl of curry chicken. Ate everything and did not keep any for later.

  1. That is like the mee siam at Nyonya Colours, not the authentic nyonya mee siam that I would enjoy so much more in Singapore. I can cook that using the made-in-Singapore instant paste but these days, it is way too expensive:

    1. Which feature is the key to determine the authenticity? I wouldn't know because apart from the different toppings, mee siam is sourish and spicy and a bit sweet with lime and sambal, From the photo, can tell the taste is not authentic? Amazing!

  2. The mee siam looks good to me actually. I don't know authentic or not coz I base it on what my mum cooks and she got the recipe from a friend. I know I DON'T like those which are just tomyum paste bihun heh.

  3. Not so crazy about Mee Siam. But I don't mind the popiah and curry. Although I prefer thinner wrapper for my popiah, but I like it as it is healthier.
