The Plaice, Newbury

I have been reading a few posts by STP about fish and chips and suddenly nostalgia hits me. I remember the very delicious fish and chips I used to eat when I was working in UK so I google for the name of the place and found it. Lucky for me, The Plaice, Newbury has a website.

So I am putting this down on my bucket list. I must return to this place to eat the delicious fish and chips after I retire in 17 years time. Hopefully they will still be around since they have been around for the last 40 years. On their website, they state that "their fish is caught in sustainable fishing grounds" so this place is acting responsibly.

Currently the price of cod (small) on their menu is only GBP3.75 (MYR20) and GBP4.65 (MYR25) for a large one so I find it reasonable as in year 2012, I had a seabass fish and chips meal in KL and the price was MYR32 and it was too oily, not a good experience I would say. After that I don't dare to eat fish and chips here anymore.

In UK, I have eaten fish and chips at other places too such as Harry Ramsden's with their tagline - "World Famous Fish & Chips". Although the fish and chips meals at Harry Ramsden's are tasty, I find that the cod at The Plaice, Newbury tastes much better.

Just look at the golden crispy outer layer and delicious white flaky juicy fish meat (photo taken from their website).

I ordered the whole works when eating there - deep fried cod, mushy peas and fries (photo taken from their website).

I used to work in this building - 9-14 Mill Reef House which is just next door to The Plaice, Newbury.

This is the address:

  2. STP has been affecting so many of us LOL!
I tried making mushy peas by myself once, it doesn't taste the same. Even our raw ingredients are not comparable, so the taste will be different :(
I didn't know you worked in the UK before. I always thought you just studied there.

  3. Wait 17 years to eat the fish and chips in UK? I guess it is worth the wait I heard so much about the fish and chips there from my partner. I hope to try it someday too :)

  5. ahhh, Fish & Chips!! i don't really quite fancy this but i gotta admit at times i do crave for it, hahaha!! but then cannot eat much also because it's all deep fried so will get "jelak" very easily, other than the fact that i'm getting older, muahahaha.. especially those here that are with thick oily batter, i supposed those you had in UK were a lot better.. fresher fish and the batter was just the right amount..

    1. I also don't eat fish and chips here because of the oily batter. The UK one has very thin to virtually no batter and not oily so that's why want to eat it again.

  8. Fish and Chips is my top choice apart from chicken. I don't really eat beef. I always enjoy FnC in oversea.

  11. Wanted to say that I wish I'd had the chance to work in UK when I remembered that actually I had! Came back in 2007. Gosh getting old. But food-wise I mostly cooked for myself. Raw materials mainly sourced from the reduced price section of supermarts hehe.

  12. What a great opportunity you had to live and work in UK! It's like a priceless period of our lives to be able to live a while in overseas. I do have very good memories while on vacation there during my student days in US. I had my best friends and cousins there who were party animals in Chelsea area. We ate at home most of the time as the UK price tags scared me compared to US. I did try their cold English beer and Fish & Chips as it was part of the 'must see & must do' rituals.

    1. In hot summer days, English cold beers are the best! And it is cheaper than here even after conversion.
