Supreme Nut with Ham

Did you guess from the title that this post is about moon cakes again? My parents in laws were given some moon cakes made by Oversea Restaurant and as they were not encouraged to eat moon cakes due to having diabetes, they gave us two moon cakes.

The chinese words on the moon cake: 海外天 (hai wai tian - Name of the restaurant) 旦黃(dan huang - the characters may not be correct but the sounds mean single yolk).

金腿 (jin tui - gold leg) - supreme nut with ham moon cake

Both the moon cakes in their individual packaging. The price is printed on the plastic packaging.

Single Yolk Lotus Paste moon cake - MYR16.20 - as you can see it is very oily so it is not crumbly and it is very sweet. I eat 1/8 each day.

Supreme Nut with Ham moon cake - MYR18 - very, very, very gooey syrupy paste sticking all the nuts together with ham inside (the red filling in the photo above is the ham). I usuaIly eat the only nuts moon cake and not those with ham so I did not eat this and another reason is because I don't want my teeth to be covered with the gooey paste. As expected, this moon cake is very, very, very, very sweet.

Have a good weekend, everyone!

  1. Huh? I don't remember 海外天's 金腿 look like this. Doesn't look good leh :-/ . Don't really like 金腿 anyway in the first place. I prefer simple lotus paste moon cakes. I love 海外天's Shanghai moon cakes of 10 years ago, when they were still baking it fresh in their restaurants.

    1. Shanghai mooncakes are those with pastry skin like tambun biscuits?

    2. The shape of tambun biscuit, but not same texture. Oversea's skin is not flaky, it is crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside (when freshly baked and warm), together with the lotus paste... heaven!
Last time they had an outlet in Central Market, my dad's shop also there, I will be having it weekly for the 2 months until Mid Autumn. They will setup the oven outside the restaurant, and we would be queuing up watching those moon cakes bake, and buy it immediately when it is ready!
Nowadays not so fun anymore, they make all their moon cakes in the factory :(

    3. I remember the Oversea restaurant in central market. Used to eat dim sum there when I was working nearby. Freshly baked of course will taste very nice when it is warm and crispy.

  2. I don't like the nutty one. My favorite is the pandan lotus paste. And also the Shanhgai mooncakes with very flaky pastry. That one is really good but I have not had any for quite some time.

    2. My mother likes the nuts without ham ones so I usually buy that for her. I can't accept the flaky pastry ones as moon cakes.

    1. Eat bit bit as desserts after savoury meal is nice. One moon cake is 4 plates of chap fan so it is expensive.

    1. If really don't fancy moon cakes no need to buy. Eat other desserts better. This is actually not that bad, suitable for people with a very sweet tooth.

    1. Yes. There are two types - nuts only and nuts with ham. Very few people like the nuts mooncake.
