Mooncake fever

We went to Soon Lei coffee shop for brunch today and noticed that the coffee shop was selling some home-made moon cakes placed at their shop. I have seen agar-agar (jelly) moon cakes being sold before and was not interested but this time I got carried away and bought a box of 4 at Soon Lei.

Dragon Fruit

Slightly sweet only, suitable for health conscious people as I could taste dragon fruit puree in the pink section and a tinge of condensed milk taste in the white translucent section.

Pretty in Pink

Nescafe coffee and cendol

Sweeter than the dragon fruit jelly moon cake but not that sweet. Strong coffee taste (brown parts) and the green parts are actual cendol. I couldn't detect any special taste for the yellow part.

Suitable for people who love coffee taste.

Chocolate jelly moon cake

This is the sweetest as the deep brown parts are made of chocolate, the white parts are made of white chocolate and I cannot detect any special taste for the yellow parts.

The texture is firm for all the jelly moon cakes.

A box of 4 is sold at MYR23 regardless of the flavour (the lady selling this box told me that the actual price is MYR25 but she is selling it cheaper in her shop). The flavours that I bought - 2 nescafe coffee, 1 chocolate, and 1 dragon fruit. The one I did not buy is cheese with sesame flavour (grey coloured moon cake).

The average price is MYR5.75 for one so for those who love to cook and bake, it would be cheaper and easier to make these agar-agar moon cakes instead of buying them. Children love eating agar-agar so if you think the real moon cakes are too sweet for your children, you could make them some agar-agar moon cakes to celebrate with, during Mid-Autumn Festival.

  1. None of these for me, thank you. I only go for the traditional pastry skin. No snowskin for me either.

    1. So you do not eat agar agar at all? Because these are just agar agar in moon cake shapes so agar agar tastes all the same no matter what shape they are in.

  2. I would eat them if they are given to me. But I probably won't buy them. Same reason as STP. And you need the moon cake mold to make this, I doubt can DIY at home as easily :D

    1. Normally I won't buy them too. This time is an exception not the norm. Moulds can be bought everywhere so DIY can be done easily with some effort of course.

    1. You can give to your colleagues. How come your neighbour is so nice since mooncakes are expensive? Jelly is just refreshing, right?

    2. hmmm I would actually prefer this jelly mooncake than the normal ones.. first I don't fancy the yolk, second I guess at least the jelly isn't as sweet/oily as the paste and dough and what-nots, so not that "menjelakkan" I guess.. and finally they are so much cheaper and colorful, hehe!! :p

  4. Somehow I don't find the jelly mooncakes very appealing at all. I prefer the traditional baked ones.

    1. True as they are just normal agar agar pretending to be moon cakes.
