中秋节快乐

Happy Mid-Autumn Festival! When I was a child, I used to celebrate this festival by playing with lanterns and candles. My parents would setup a foldable table in the garden and we would all be eating moon cakes, pomelo, little taro, and water caltrops under the bright moon light. Now with no children around, we don't do this anymore.

Last Friday, I went to Midvalley mall after work to buy some grocery and saw stalls selling moon cakes outside Aeon supermarket. I asked for the egg custard moon cakes at the Mei Xin (Maxim) stall just to have a look and was told that they were sold out and the lady asked me to buy earlier next year because they were very popular and would sell out quickly.

Aeon card members will get 15% off the price for the moon cakes and some stalls even offered 1 moon cake free if you buy and pay for 4 moon cakes. I asked the Casahana stall if this offer was available and the lady-in-charged said no but she could give me one moon cake foc if I buy 4, no problem at all. Since I was planning to buy some to share with my family and co workers, I thought why not and bought 2 lotus paste (MYR15.90 each), 1 low sugar white lotus with single yolk (MYR17.90) and 1 mixed nuts (MYR18.90). Total MYR58.35 and oops, I forgot to ask her which type she would give me foc before buying.

She answered the new type of moon cake - Dark Knight. I tried to persuade her to give me a traditional type since I don't like any new style moon cakes except for the traditional ones but she said no. In the end, she said she could give me another new type of moon cake - Crimson Opera so I could choose either one to get it foc.

Dark Knight - "Fragrant black sesame and black bean paste with soft brown sugar omochi wrapped in a charcoal pastry cloak"

Crimson Opera - "Beetroot with a heart of cheese and creamy white chocolate"

So which one would you choose - Dark Knight or Crimson Opera? Or would you return all 4 moon cakes to her and say you are not buying any.

Nice box and paper bag given (that's why the price is high)

I bought 4+1(foc) moon cakes in total but only 3 are shown here

Dark Knight vs Crimson Opera - which one would you choose?

  1. None. I'm like you. Not into these new hybrids. The colours would put me off already. Traditional pastry - nice and gold, good! Black - death, bad omen, no good. Red should be fine so if I simply had to choose, I would pick crimson opera.

Happy Mooncake Festival to you and your family.

    1. You are correct about the chinese words. You did not chooseblack or red?

    2. I would go for red since it's an auspicious colour.. But nowadays, people go for black, coz it's unique and something different.. In my MIL's pack of mooncakes from Bakers Cottage, there's a black one.. It's not chocolate.. It's like lotus, but black in colour, and it's not sweet.. I guess I will settle for the red one.. Red one is usually dragon fruit, not bad too..

  4. Happy Mid Autumn Festival! Sighs, I thought it is 2 weeks away, yesterday only discovered it is today. I wonder if I go to Aeon later, should be able to get cheap mooncakes? Seems like I can forget about buying the cheapo mooncake in Ipoh this year.
The word beetroot drove me to Dark Knight.

    1. Thank you. Same to you. I guess you were too busy working. Can try to see if there are any moon cakes on discount today and blog about it. Next year then for the Ipoh ming yue. So I take it that you don't like beetroot?

    2. I have a phobia on any unfamiliar plant-food, beetroot being one of them. The thing with plant based food and me is, if you let me see hear the name and let me see the real plant first, I would not prefer them. You need to not tell me what it is and then disguise it with other food to make me be "open" to the taste first, then I might love it. Beetroot falls into the former. I know, I'm kind of funny that way.

    3. So you have never tasted beetroot then?

  5. If I must really buy, then I would go for the Dark Knight. Usually those FOC ones are not very appealing.

  6. I enjoy browsing the mooncakes because the bakeries are always coming out with very creative flavors ever year (due to the competition), some can be rather interesting too.. but of course I've already stopped buying mooncakes since years ago, well, you know why, haha!! yet, I still like to browse - the innovative flavors, creative names given and also all the very beautiful packaging..

    HAPPY MUD-AUTUMN!!! :)

Nowadays the mooncakes come in very nice boxes.. all look so classy that I didn't want to throw them away.. there are still two empty boxes lying in my house.. so what do you do with them? :) Ok, of the two flavours, both also I haven't tried or even know what they are but by the look, I will choose Dark Knight.. reminds of me Batman! hahaa... So how was the taste?

Can you imagine their taste by looking at the description of the ingredients used in the new style moon cakes?

  9. Hi Mun

Guess what? Yesterday we went to Publika and saw Maxim stall but they don't have egg custard too. Anyway, my better half bought the Crimson Opera.hahha but I think the taste is a bit funny especially the crust. The filling was fine. He wanted to get the Dark Knight but I have to stop him from getting more of what we can eat.

Happy Mid Autumn Festival to you and family
