Kafe Commons

This is one of the halal places where I eat my lunch during workdays. They offer set meals with drinks at about MYR7.50 but will agree to take the drinks off and charge you just for the main dish MYR6.

Nasi Lemak Chicken Rendang set- RM7.50 with a glass of drink which I gave to my co-worker as I did not want the drink and did not know that I could ask for the drink to be excluded from my order.

The 2nd time, I asked for the drink to be excluded so I was charged MYR6 for the same nasi lemak ayam rendang set but without a drink.

The 3rd time I was there, I ordered a chicken rice set without drink - MYR6 - the rice is similar to those rice served in Hainanese chicken rice meal so it was very flavourful but the chicken provided is deep fried (very crispy) chicken rather than steamed chicken and the meal included a well done fried egg, some slices of raw tomatoes, cucumbers and a bowl of cabbage soup too. Good value for money and tasty too.

I have to place my order at the counter and pay up and a number board is given to me. Then when my order is ready, it is delivered to my table based on the number given.

  1. I had nasi lemak the other day - more expensive than yours and yours look so much nicer...and no, not what I've been looking for. Will blog about it in a few days. Not going to have that again. :(

    1. The restaurant you went to is more upscale?

  2. I might sound racist here, but I find that usually the Malay eateries will be willing to do this kind of compromise and charge you less for it. They are not so profit oriented. With Chinese restaurants, "you don't want the drink/taugeh/peanuts? Not problem, I will save of those cost, but the set price is still the same ^_^"

  3. Quite a good deal for RM6 without the drinks. But I think chicken rice is better with either steamed or roasted chicken.

    2. Is nasi lemak that bad? I think it is about the same as a butter cake or a cheese cake.

    1. One egg only = 2 halves. Are you on a diet? If not, then can eat nasi lemak whenever you like, no problem.

    1. The exchange rate now is so much in your favour, that's why you had to pay 6x this amount.

  12. My stomach is rumbling just looking at the photos! I haven't had proper (meaning with a side of chicken, I like mine ayam masak merah or fried chicken) for ages!

I also like the look of that Hainanese style chicken rice, had some halal ones that are surprisingly good coz of the different spices that they use, it has it's own appeal!

It's quite a good deal for RM 6 without drinks! I pay slightly over that for my lunch too (usually chicken rice or mixed rice) but for some reason I always feel the need to add rice, or I won't be full.

    1. This eatery is considered one of the more affordable ones around here so there is always a crowd and the need to order first and then stand and wait for seats. Other eateries nearby charge more than this.

  13. When I went on cruise, I missed Nasi Lemak so much! I realised the chefs on board had to cook only high class food.
I always banjir my whole plate with the spicy sambal sauce! So nice and spicy like your plate in first photo.
