Ichi Zen

After walking for a while in Tokyo Street, Pavilion and looking at the menus of all the Japanese restaurants there, we decided to have lunch at Ichi Zen.

Chawan Mushi that came with our set lunch.

Salmon Shioyaki and Deep Fried Oysters (2) Set Lunch - MYR25.90 - includes rice, salad, fruits, pickled cucumbers and miso soup.

Cod Shioyaki and Squid Set Lunch - MYR28.90 - includes rice, salad, fruits, pickled cucumbers and miso soup.

The food tastes good but for this affordable price, we did expect the amount of fish served to be very little and true enough we got a small and thin piece of salmon and cod but no complaints from us.

The set lunch we ordered.

  1. Ooooo....lovely bowls! Hah!!! This must be the post that you published by mistake and quickly removed - that was why when everyone clicked the link, they would not get the page they were looking for. Hehehehe!!!! No worries! That happens to the best of us - me too!!!

    1. The previous "2nd time wiser" post is not supposed to be out on Thursday but I did not remove that because RealGunners already made a comment so this correct post has to give way to that one.

  2. Same family as Azuma, no wonder the set lunch menu and pricing looks the same. On the downside to the restaurant and bright side to me, this price is considered expensive for Penang. I went to Azuma once with colleagues and all of them were cursing at the expensive price and small portions. So we went only once and then gone back to the cheaper outlets.

    1. You don't like to eat Japanese food?

    2. I mean cheaper Japanese food outlet. There's a few other Japanese restaurants near where I stay, like Sakae, Sushi Tei, Japin and Okomen. Azuma is the most expensive so we actively avoid it now. I leave out Sushi King because they are no bloody good.

    3. You are right about Sushi King. They are in my banned eateries list. But really cannot compare japanese conveyor belt restaurants with those without conveyor belt. The former is definitely cheaper than the latter.

  3. I like both your sets, but like you said, the fish portion sure not very big lor.. I love cod fish, can never have enuff of it.. Yep, "kum siong har" the price for Japanese food (and bento sets), but if me, I always go for the ramen+gyoza+tempura set, haha..

  5. the price is actually considered cheap for a Japanese bento.. no wonder i can see the portion was small, probably to strike a balance between the price to attract customer and the cost for a decent profit margin..

oh, the edo ichi (江戶一) is also under the same group, haha!! i actually just had my dinner last week there, the one in Publika.. their bento are around RM50 a set, no wonder i felt this one at RM25 cheaper~~ :p

    1. This set has two main items - fish and oyster; fish and squid and at a cheap price so portion must be small I guess.

  7. Oh, I've been to the one in Subang! I thought their set meals are very reasonable, and I like their food - it's not one of the halal Japanese food outlets, I've always believed that you can't run a halal Japanese food outlet without compromising on quality coz so many dishes in Japanese cuisine doesn't comply with halal standards (not just pork).

  10. Wow! I love what you ate there!! Yummy!

We are almost paying similar price for their average Bento sets in Japan today. Our earning power has increased and their Yen has fallen sharply.
