Torturing the Lions?

Another not-a-food post. I just read a lion dance post so I post one lion dance post here in return. This is the only lion dance I witness this CNY with two lions - a red one and a yellow one.

The red one had to leap up to eat an angpow hung close to the ceiling board.

The yellow one also had to leap up to eat a bunch of green vege hung from the ceiling.

  2. Hahaha, it's not torture lah. They've been through training to do exactly these stuff. It's routine for them. :D

    1. But not when it has to be done many times during the session right?

    2. Doesn't matter how many times, as long as the stance is right. That's what's the trainings are for. In fact they usually do many sessions per day during CNY season, every single day.
You can look for a kungfu class and enrol, then you can see for yourself. Most of the more famous kungfu clubs have their own lion dance troupes.

    3. Hahaha, to me kungfu training is a torture, after watching Jackie Chan "zak ma" over a joss stick. Me, enroll in a kungfu class at this age, you must be joking! :D

  3. I seen one at real close when we dine in a restaurant on CNY Eve. The restaurant invited the lion dances troupe to perform before close for the holiday.

Other lion dances all at far distance either from my car or when walking at shoplots.

  6. I have not seen a lion dance performance for many years, haha!! but I do agree with RealGunners that this is not torture but they are trained to do so.. first it's competition among troops of the same industry, they have to stand out.. second, think about the dancer urging for more challenges so their lives are not dull~~ :)

    1. But for this dance performance, the lions have been doing this for about 50 times in 4 hours straight, not torture meh? Competition do a few times in one or 2 hours only mah, right?

  7. I have seen closed up lion dance performances before when an aunt invited the troupe into her house while we were there visiting during CNY. That was many years ago and the children love to see them.

  9. Torturing? Nah..teasing maybe. If not mistaken, the troupe leader already bargain for certain amount of "angpau" for certain performance. If need to climb high price is different. They have been trained. Just like artists and singers.

    1. But still to do it 50 times in 4 hours straight is too much, right?

    1. Yes, the drum rolls are very loud. I nearly went deaf and had to put my hands over my ears.

  11. Lion dances always excite me like a child again.
I have seen many and some people are cruel to give them 5 pomeloes to peel all onto the trays! Of course the ang pows were very big! The 2 lions used pen knives to cut the pomeloes into blooming flowers! Fantastic!

    1. It is amazing that they can cut the pomeloes into flowers inside the lion head - space is so limited in there.
