Peel Paus

Bought a Char Siew (BBQ Pork) Pau for lunch (MYR1.70) and as can be seen, the skin has some black dots on it.

So I just do what most people do when they buy paos from roadside stalls or coffee shops - peel off the skin. Is life too short to peel paus? Obviously not when the skin has obviously been left out in the open for quite a while.

Is this a cost saving measure? Still no signs of the fillings and I am nearly halfway through it. I think many of you make better paus than this.

  1. Mun, looks like there is hardly any filling in the paus. What is supposed to be the filling?

  2. hahahahaha!!! sorry ah, but i just could not control myself!!! OMG, this must be very frustrating to you and hilarious to us looking at the photo.. i hope the char siew filling is at least (pathetically) stuffed on the other side of the bun?? else, this must be the worst char siew pao i have ever seen, just a fine line of char siew sauce which is not even 5cm wide!!!

    CLASSIC!!! :D

    1. Yes, on the other side, there is a little char siew filling, just a little bit. Hahaha, very funny right?

  3. Goodness! RM1.70...and basically NO filling? Here, RM1.80 and so much filling that I wish they would have more skin! Black spots some more, so dirty!!! My favourite here is ok, and always sold covered in those bamboo steamers, not in the open...but my missus and my girl would always peel off the skin, not me - I like it smooth, not rough rough. Hehehehehehe!!!!

  6. WTF?! Where's the char siew?? I've had char siew pao with stingy filling, but nothing beats this one yet!

And yes, I do peel the skin off all the paos that I bought outside. Like is too short to risk NOT peeling the skin off.

    1. I also have not seen something like this too. Did your mother teach you to peel off the skin of paus when you were a child?

  7. That is one sad looking char siew pau :'( I peel off the skin too if it comes off easily but not all baos. Some baos are so fluffy and soft, the skin won't come off and those are usually the good ones! ;D

  8. Oh dear, bite until so deep still no sign of the char siew filling.. It's like buying kaya/red bean buns from the kedai runcit those type, those 6-in-1 buns, very little fillings, sigh..

    1. I think the seller just get the paus from a distributor.

  14. I am always lazy to peel the paus. My god ma once brought me to see her friend's outlet where the kitchen chefs used water from their mouth to spit and spray at the pau dumplings before steaming!!!! Gross!!!
