Monthly Dim Sum

This plate of french beans with dried shrimp chilli is listed as titbits in the receipt and is served by default (MYR3). You have to say you don't want it if you do not want to pay for it. I wonder whether anyone would make the mistake of thinking that it is a complimentary starter. A pot of tea with  refillable hot water costs MYR 4 for 2 pax. A variety of condiments/sauces is also provided.

Steamed dim sum - scallops and vege dumplings (MYR9), century egg siew mai with ginger slices (MYR8), prawn dumpling /har kau (MYR9)

The scallop vege dumpling is the nicest among the whole lot

The taste of prawn dumpling with sizable prawns became boring when compared to the scallop vege dumplings.

A slice of century egg is placed on top of the pork meat filling in the siew mai.

BBQ pork (Char Siew) puffs - MYR7 - the pastry tastes strongly of butter and maybe milk or cream so one will feel coy after eating too much of this. I could not stop the waiter in time from cutting this with a pair of scissors but after this, the waiter then asked me before he attempts to cut the other deep fried dim sum and I replied no. There were only two of us at the table so there wasn't a need to cut the dim sum. In my opinion, cutting dim sum is only applicable if there are many people at a table sharing limited pieces of food.

The BBQ pork / char siew filling is both sweet and savoury

Roast pork - MYR16 served with a fiery mustard dip (not in photo)

I see pork belly

Salad prawn (MYR8) served with mayonnaise

The filling is the same as the steamed prawn dumplings

The mayonnaise dip looked untouched even after I dipped the deep fried prawn dumplings into it so in order to ensure that it could not be reused, I mixed some other condiments/sauce into it. Total bill for two came up to MYR74.25 after 10% service charge and 6% government tax.

The two of us were ushered to a table in a corner

  1. The tidbits, I always kena tipu wan. I always sit down and simply eat the kacang or whatever that is served before me. And then when the bill came, charged kao kao. Each time I'll tell myself next time ask first but when that time comes, I forget and eat and got charged again >_<

  5. Very nice...but I do not order siew yoke with dim sum, that one I'd eat with rice...lunch or dinner and dim sum, I'd have for breakfast.

Monthly? You keep time, once a month? I don't - will go when I feel like it...but we do not go so often, definitely not once a month.

    1. We were having dim sum for lunch, hence the siew yoke. No, I don't keep time but am thinking of making it a monthly thing.

  6. yeah, i actually do not like that because it feels like we are being "forced" to take the starters and pay for it.. good that this restaurant allows you to say no, but i think some just make it compulsory.. afterall, not many people will realize this is charged, as they may have thought it's complimentary and it usually won't appear as a significant amount on the bill to be noticed.. so most of the time the starters was just served and consumed and charged.. only careful and detailed people will ask not to be served, i guess..

the roast pork looks good BTW~~

    1. I believe every restaurant will remove the starter and not charged it to your bill if you ask them nicely to do so.

  8. I think the first time I encountered those condiments and wet towels that are not complimentary with the "service charge" was a few years ago at Dragon-i. Back then always get fooled one. I think nowadays, since so many of the relatively atas restaurants practice the same cut-throat ways, most would be wary and know how to deal with it already.

I don't think I will like that siew mai, I prefer the traditional ones, without all those fancy patterns.

  9. You're quite a small eater...so, I'm surprised you can finish all that with your spouse. The siew yoke looks nice...not too fat!

Have you had dim sum at Hee Lai Ton? I remembered you telling me that it's your in-laws' favourite restaurant. I went there for dim sum on Sunday and it missed the mark for me.

    1. Hehehe, I ask my spouse to eat most of the food. Yes, I have eaten dim sum at Hee Lai Ton. Not the best but still acceptable for some items. Which item missed the mark?

    2. Unfortunately, most of it...especially the braised chicken feet and siu long bao. Wasn't liking the siew yoke too...which was more fat than lean!

    3. I don't like their sui long bao too. Did not eat their braised chicken feet and siew yoke. I think their congee and wor tip are ok.

Feel not so nice to reject the appetiser... especially when I'd be rejecting the wet towels. At least appetiser can eat one hehe.

    1. If you are around that area, no harm trying this if you feel like eating dim sum.
