Hor Lor King

Today I ate durian for the first time this year. I went to a durian stall in ss2 (durianss2 dot com) and the seller recommended this hybrid durian - Hor Lor King (MYR18 per kg). I googled for more information and found that it is given the name Hor Lor because this type of durian is shaped like a water gourd ("hor lor" in Hokkien or "wu lou" in Cantonese). Hor Lor originates from Penang I think but the ones I bought came from Perak.

I bought two durians - one small and one very small - for a total of MYR40 so the weight of both the durians - shell, stalk and all - is about 2.25kg. There are 18 seeds and I gave 6 to my siblings as they were scared of getting sore throat so they did not want to eat more and kept the rest for myself.

Today I ate 3, my spouse just ate 1 and I put the rest (8) into my fridge to be eaten tomorrow. This durian is sweet with a tinge of bitterness. The flesh is thick, a little sticky, not fibrous and there is no watery taste so all is good as I don't like durians with watery taste. The seeds are quite small too. I think I am going to buy more durians for this month. Hopefully I don't get sore throat. :)

Hor Lor King durian - simply delicious!

    1. I have seen fresh durians from Thailand sold in Taiwan. I thought Thailand exports durians to almost all countries.

    3. I wonder whether you can find fresh ones sold in sydney or not. I know there are frozen ones being exported worldwide but I have not tried any before.

  5. That's a lot of seeds inside that small and very-small durians! I've bought irregularly-shaped ones (I'd classify as medium-small) with only 4 inside each.

    1. What's the weight of your durians? The ones I bought are 1.5kg and 0.75kg. Or maybe the seeds are smaller than the one you bought.
