Tea Garden Sri Petaling

We did not intend to eat at this place because we thought that the food will be just like the food in any other new style kopitiam. It so happened that we found a parking space near this eatery so we said to each other, let's eat here. Tea Garden is from Johor and has a few outlets as listed on their website  http://www.teagarden.com.my/ and this outlet in Sri Petaling is one of its new outlets (although it has been around since 2015 when NuxV wrote about it and I believe that it has undergone one renovation since then).

Beef Rendang Nasi Lemak - MYR13.40 nett. I would prefer the beef to be more tender. We requested for the fried egg to have a fully cooked yolk. Quite decent. The sambal and rendang is not that spicy hot when we ate it but we could feel it burning in our stomach later.

This dish has a nice name and an expensive price. Eight treasure glutinous rice - MYR5.30 nett. Basically this is just lo mai fan (glutinous rice) with peanuts, spring onions, mushrooms, and deep fried shallots. Where or what are the 8 treasures? Will definitely not order this next time. Have to order dishes that are more worth the price paid.

Double boiled barley with fungus (hot) - MYR7.40 nett. We find this too sweet.

Other than the white fungus and ginkgo nuts, there are cubes of egg whites in this dessert. How unique!

Tea Garden at Sri Petaling is located opposite Mcd. This corner shop lot used to be occupied by Restoran Kinrara which has now moved to a smaller shop lot nearby.

  1. The cubed egg white is really unique. Usually I see egg white strains but not cubed ones.

Yes the lo mai kai is expensive. Just because they name it to be so 'atas' but there is no treasures in it, they should not price it so costly. Thank you for sharing this out.

I like egg yolks to be runny but the hubby likes it to be thoroughly cooked.

    1. Yes, usually the egg whites will be like floating around freely and not in cubes like this. You are welcome! I guess I should have guessed that the lo mai kai will be like this. My spouse is ok with runny yolks but I am not ok with runny yolks.

  2. The boiled barley with white fungus and ginkgo nuts is very nutritious, but I don't eat ginkgo nuts (cos I don't like the taste)

Do they have mutton rendang nasi lemak?

Same as Merryn, I also like my eggs to be runny and not fully cooked

  3. My! My! The nasi lemak looks stunning, the beef rendang is like wow!!! Too bad it wasn't tender enough.

I am not fond of eggs fried using the ring though and nasi lemak, the standard condiment should be hard boiled egg but that seems to be dying out now - most are going for fried eggs. Nicer, perhaps...but of course, it may be more oily.

  5. Hmm. The nasi lemak is worth the price for such establishment. Too bad the beef was not tender. Hmm. What a name for lo mai kai.

Yaloh. Usually it was the running egg in tong sui; not cubes. Unique idea.

    1. I think the price for the nasi lemak is quite a good price.

  6. Probably to make up the balance components of the Eight Treasures glutinous rice are probably some bits of lap mei, dried scallops and dried prawns? Since the price is almost like the price of a lor mai kai, these bits could be so tiny you can't see nor taste it...hehe! :D

    1. If cannot see and cannot taste, then better not put any of those ingredients that you mentioned and the customers won't be none the wiser since the customers cannot see and cannot taste them, hahahaha.

  7. Hmm, I don't remember they sell nasi lemak. I mean this franchise. I have only ever eaten in their JB outlets, always those steamed bamboo basket rice. The locals say "come here only for this".

If you ask me how I really feel about "this", well... no comment. :/

    1. They have a lot of other items in their menu now, not just those steamed bamboo basket rice.

  8. The nasi lemak looks so good. Egg white in dessert? I have seen one desert where they have quails eggs in it. I find that strange :)

    1. Eggs in dessert is not strange to me because there are quite many Cantonese tong sui with hard boiled eggs or eggs swirls in them but not egg whites in cube form like this. The nasi lemak is tasty and the price is ok too.

  9. We were there once. My hubby ordered the "Eight treasure glutinous rice' and said the say thing as you "not ordering next time, not worth the price". My son ordered spaghetti bolognese and I ordered rojak - oklah.

    1. Ah, so your husband also thinks it is not worth it to eat the lo mai fan with the glamorous name. I will go and try their other dishes next time.

  10. that nasi lemak looks similar like those in Papparich! But I think I will go Old Town for nasi lemak rather than Tea Garden...Till now i'm stil figuring out what is nice in this place before my next visit. Perhaps it's just the bamboo basket rice as mentioned by RealGunners.

    1. I find the price of the nasi lemak much better than PPRCH. It has been a long time since I have been to Old Town for their nasi lemak but I think this nasi lemak tastes much better than what I remember I ate at OT. Perhaps you can try their mutton rendang nasi lemak next time. I like the taste, very nice.

    3. The 2nd time we went, it was almost full house so we had to sit in the area with no air conditioning.

    4. I went there on last Saturday...and have tried the beef rendang nasi lemak!

    5. You tried the beef instead of the mutton? Can't wait to read your review about it as compared to the nasi lemak from Popo cantin.
