WG Weekday Lunches

Here are some of the lunch places that we frequent during weekdays.

Good Golly Miss Molly at Millenium Square, PJ is my friend's favourite lunch place due to their coffee. So far, I have eaten cakes, duck pasta, Penne Pasta with Beef Meatballs, and salted egg pasta.

This time I ordered the fish and chips at MYR 18 nett. From the taste, this is not dory fish but I am not sure what fish it is because I did not ask. I like the thick chips.

My friend's chicken chop at MYR 16 nett. Just look at those delicious thick chips.

Sometimes we do something out of the norm, such as eat durian during lunch. Before that, we had a savoury lunch at Uncle Don, SS2 because it is within walking distance to SS2 Durian, PJ.

Grilled Chicken Chop at MYR 14.60+ (6% SST - MYR 15.47 nett). As chicken is not on top of my food list, I took almost the whole piece home for my family and ate only a bit of chicken meat.

This is a set lunch so ice cream and lemon teas are included.

Total Bill for 4 pax is MYR59.80 nett so it is about MYR 15 nett per pax.

After lunch at Uncle Don, we walked to SS2 Durian and found that the price is high on 14-6-2019 but we still went ahead and bought two durians to share between the 4 of us.

1.5 kg XO durian at MYR 28 per kg so it costs MYR 42 nett. It is sweet but the flesh is a bit watery.

A one kg Jiu Ji durian at MYR 25 per kg. Sweet with a tinge of bitter taste. So far for this year, we have only eaten durian during lunch time once which is on 14-6-2019.

In the revamped menu, the lotus wrapped rice set is now priced lower at MYR 16.80 nett with only two choices for drinks - buckwheat tea or brown rice green tea and instead of a small bowl of jelly, they now serve a small appetiser (beancurd and braised peanuts) which changes daily. Back in 2016, the set is priced at MYR21.90 nett. In 2017, this dish is priced at MYR 16.10 nett on the ala carte menu of the Zun Express in Midvalley Mall.

Total price for 2 pax is MYR 33.60 nett.

My friend's favourite Pan Mee stall is at Hock Thai coffee shop but I prefer to order other food after trying the Pan Mee once.

On one visit, I ordered the curry yellow noodle mixed with mee hoon at MYR 6.50 nett and chose to have two pieces of yong tofu (brinjal and bittergourd) instead of the usual ingredients (chicken meat).

On another visit, I just ate one small lo mai kai (chicken in glutinous rice) for MYR 4 nett. I think for future visits to this hot coffee shop, I will stick with this lo mai kai because I can finish it without taking any home and the glutinous rice is soft without being mushy so it is tasty.

My friend likes to eat at Ah Ma Kitchen at Jaya One, PJ. So far, I have only eaten tong sui such as bubur cha cha, bak chang and deep fried wantons there.

The last visit, I decided to just order the dish that my friends order so the three of us ordered curry noodle at MYR 10.90 nett with different types of noodles. I tried having kway teow in curry and though it tastes good mixed with mihun, I will go back to having mihun only in curry because mihun will soak up more curry gravy so it will be tastier. The weird thing is my friend says that she likes to eat this curry because it does not have that much coconut milk (not lemak) but to me the curry tastes creamy enough due to the coconut milk.

3 curry noodles so the total is MYR 32.70 nett.

Watermelon Rosemary

Watermelon, Lychee and Rosemary Herb drink at MYR 14 nett. Not for those who don't like the taste of Rosemary herb.

Non-baked cheese cake - MYR 16 nett. Taste good, not too cheesy.

Earl grey ice cream with orange souffle - MYR 19 nett. The receipt still says matcha souffle.

I shared this Deep Fried Mac and Cheese (MYR 20 nett) with my friend. Half a portion allows me room to eat the cake and souffle.

Chicken Karaage at MYR 24 nett. The chicken is as crispy as before.

Seabass Pasta - MYR 20 nett. This time they have pasta so we did not need to use soba like the previous time.

Total price for 4 pax is MYR 113 nett at The Catcher in the Rye cafe in PJ. We ate lunch here after we decided not to eat lunch at Bunch.

48HSBD1 Collagen

Two pepper and salt deep fried pork trotters at MYR 15.90++ (10% service charge and 6% SST = MYR 18.45 nett) each. Just like the ones we ate here in 2017, they are nice - practically no meat at all, only skins and gelatinous tendons, very soft chewy, full of collagen. From now on, we will eat this dish here once a year.

Deep Fried Yam with duck (small portion) at MYR 27.90++ (MYR 32.36 nett). I have eaten this dish before in 2012 at Pu Tien One Utama and liked it so I order it again after 7 years of not eating it.

The yam paste is very thick and soft so I like it. The duck meat sandwiched inside the yam paste does not have a strong duck taste so my friend finds the taste of this dish to be boring with no kick to it but I like the mellow flavour. A small clove found its way into my mouth and the clove taste lingers on.

Since there are two of us and we did not order any drinks, each of us order an individual portion extra small bowl of noodles in broth. Lor mee for 1 pax at MYR 13.90++ (MYR 16.12 nett).

A bowl of extra small Ca Fen (a mixture of mee sua and mee hoon with soup and vegetables, small cubes of tofu, seafood and bits of pork intestines) for 1 pax at MYR 13.90++ (MYR 16.12 nett). My friend prefers Lor mee because this felt like just drinking broth because the noodles are too fine and soft.

No more broth so the tofu, mee sua and mee hoon can now be seen.

Default appetiser at MYR 2.90++ (MYR 3.36 nett). I believe they are slices of jicama pickled with orange squash because it tastes like that to me.

Total late lunch for 2 pax: MYR 104.85 nett without any drinks. Satisfying meal but definitely a once-a-year event.

Souffle Pancakes

Souffle Pancakes are popular in Japan but I have never eaten them when I was in Tokyo back in 2007 so when my friend brought me to eat this Sakura Souffle Pancake in Penang, I have no way of knowing whether it tastes authentic or not.

It is light and fuffly so it is easy to eat. Now you see it, now you don't kind of easy to eat. Not too sweet.

My friend paid for it so I am not sure whether MYR 24.90 is the nett price or not. All other souffle pancake choices consist of the souffle pancakes with the same original flavour but the toppings are different: matcha and red bean, mangoes, chocolate are some of them.

This cafe is named Lavish. It is a Fusion Bakery by Love A Loaf, which is a  popular bakery in Penang,

Back in KL, I tried the Matcha Red Bean souffle pancake (MYR 21 nett) at another popular cafe called "Neighbour's Coffee Bar". The syrup tastes like butterscotch syrup to me but it could be just caramel syrup.

The sides are light and fluffy but the middle part is moist with texture similar to the savoury souffle I ate in Franco cafe in One Utama back in 2015 which is like thick milk foam on a cup of cappucino. They are easy to eat too so very quickly they are no more. Franco cafe is now Marco in One Utama with the same owner but serving almost fine dining food instead. 

I was told that they are out of chocolate items when I placed an order for the chocolate banana souffle pancake. I did not order the one with soft serve because the seasonal flavour for the soft serve has something to do with caramel which I do not quite like.

Foc drinking water is provided but the two of us ordered a cup of black coffee at MYR 9 nett. The coffee is thick and rich with a taste so unique that I inquired about the bean and the answer is Ethiopia Aricha Pink by Cloud Catcher with the online description of "89pts Bubble gum and floral aromatics with flavours of raspberry, rose water, red grapes, blueberry, cherry jam and very elegant finish" - no wonder we could not put our finger on the taste.

This cafe is located in Seri Gembira Avenue, Happy Garden where Canton Kitchen is.

The cafe is bright and pleasant so the 30 minutes wait for the pancake after placing our order was bearable. We were there earlier but it was full house so we went to another eatery for a quick lunch to fill our hungry tummies before returning here for desserts at our leisure.

WG Dave Deli Starling

Salted Egg Chicken Chop at MYR 19.90+ (10% service charge = MYR 21.89 nett). I tried a small piece and it tastes quite ok.

Is this a permanent item on the menu or just a seasonal one?

Initially I wanted to order an item from this menu but changed my mind because chicken is not on top of my food list and I prefer fries than rice. Drinks are not included. One needs to add on MYR 2.50+ (MYR 2.75 nett) for the drinks listed on this promo menu.

Two of my friends ordered the roasted chicken rice at MYR 16.90+ (MYR 18.59 nett). They said that the chicken tastes good and the rice is just ok. I tried a bit of the rice and found that it is not spicy. My friend has to pour chili flakes from a bottle on the table to spice up the rice. I guess the white sauce on the salad leaves is sour cream.

Grilled fish (not dory) at MYR 20.90+ (MYR 22.99 nett). I like the side dish of carrots and sweet potatoes.

I ordered fish and chips at MYR 19.90+ (MYR 21.89 nett) and packed up one piece of fish and 70% of the fries for dinner. It tastes just as good as the fish and chips at the closed-down outlet in Midvalley Mall.

I gave in to temptation and ordered my favourite drink when young - ribena longan at MYR 6+ (MYR 6.60 nett). No regrets because it tastes so refreshing.

Foc drinking water is provided.

Total for 5 pax is MYR 116.05 nett. We got MYR 15 cashback when my friend paid by using a specific payment app on her mobile.

They offer table service here at this Dave Deli branch at Starling Mall, unlike their other branches which require customers to place and pay for their order at the counter before the food is served. They also have gotten over their teething problems that PH mentioned here but will I be back? Only if my friends decide to do so because I would like to try the salmon dish at Bonfire as mentioned below.

While walking about in Starling mall, I noticed this set lunch menu and make a note to visit it one day to order the salmon dish which I remember reading about in PH's article entitled "Tak Sedap".

Must eat here at Bonfire during the next visit to this mall.

WG Ganga Cafe Seapark

On 12 Jun 2019, we read this news article that The Ganga Cafe (Vegetarian cafe) in Bangsar (same location as Baba Low's Nyonya Eatery) has opened an outlet in Seapark, PJ (same location as Weng Wah eatery) and last week, 7 of us had lunch there. Light Thali at MYR 9 nett with 2 vegetable dishes, 1 dhal curry, 1 papadum, and brown rice.

Standard Thali set at MYR 11 nett with 3 vege dishes, 2 types of curry (dhal curry and vegetarian fish curry), 1 papadum, and brown rice.

Another Light Thali at MYR 9 nett. My friend requested for capati instead of rice and swapped one of the vegetable dish with a tofu dish.

Vegetarian mutton murtabak at MYR 12 nett. I did not taste this but my friend says it does have the mutton taste.

Pudina Naan at MYR 7 nett. The naan is too chewy for my poor teeth.

Beetroot dosa/thosai at MYR 5 nett. I tried a bit of it. Could not taste the earthy beetroot flavour. Nice coconut dip.

Hyderabad Dum Briyani at MYR 20 nett. The portion is big enough for 2 regular eaters. The yogurt dip is sourish so it is refreshing. It is only slightly spicy unless you bite on a peppercorn or dried chili.

Vegetable Briyani at MYR 16 nett. The portion is also as large as the previous briyani dish but much more spicy. 

Avocado Lassi at MYR 11 nett. I requested for totally non-sweet but the lassi served was sweet and the manager changed it to a non-sweet lassi when he got my feedback so the service is good. I like this drink so I will order it again.

Total price is MYR 116.50 nett for 7 pax. An average of  MYR 17 per pax so the price is quite acceptable for lunch. All of us like what we had so we will be back for more.
