At the end of May, I went to AA Meat Shop (http://www.aameatshop.com.my/) to buy some An Xin's brand fresh pork ribs and saw that the meat shop was selling some frozen dumplings so I bought a Nyonya dumpling at MYR6.90 nett to try.
After steaming it, I was disappointed to see that this Nyonya dumpling is not blue in colour. The minced pork fillings within the glutinous rice is not sweet at all and I couldn't taste any candied wintermelon within the minced meat so I don't think this is an authentic Nyonya dumpling but it is also not the normal type of bak chang that I am used to with black-eyed beans or mung beans, mushrooms, a chunk of pork meat, chestnuts, salted egg yolks so I think it tried to be a Nyonya chang but did not come even close.
The receipt above did say that it is a Nyonya Dumpling at MYR6.90 nett. Must remember not to buy chang/chung from this meat shop.
I like dumpling with a lot of pork meat inside
ReplyDeleteThis one has lots of minced or chopped up pork meat.
DeleteThe one you had looked more like savoury rice dumplings(咸肉粽)
DeleteI prefer 咸肉粽
Yes, the dumpling in my photo can be considered a 咸肉粽 (savoury rice dumpling).
DeleteDefinitely not a nyonya dumpling this one. Sigh.. so sad that people use the NYONYA name to boost their sales.
ReplyDeleteI don't think they purposely did that. Maybe they thought this is how a nyonya chang is.
Deletei want that!! didn't have for 2 years =(
ReplyDeleteIf you come to visit KL, you can always buy dumplings from a stall in O&S in Paramount, PJ. They sell them all year round.
DeleteRM6.90 is mighty expensive for a nyonya dumpling wannnabe...and even if it had been a good one. I did not get to buy any this year in Kuching - post on that coming soon in my blog. :'(
ReplyDeleteThe minimum price here for a savoury bak chang is MYR6 so this one is only 90 cents more.
DeleteI have 2 changs so far this year. Meat changs. Personally I prefer groundnuts changs.
ReplyDeleteI think I have more than 2 this year so far. Will definitely have more before this year ends.
DeleteI know this is a dumpling post but... why are you buying pork ribs? Are you going to... you know... ??
ReplyDeleteHahaha, no, not me. My spouse is going to cook ABC soup with pork ribs and I had to go buy because we cannot find a place to park the car.
DeleteI've not had a Nyonya dumpling before coz I'm afraid that I may not like the sweet taste.
ReplyDeleteCan't comment about the sweet taste here because I have not tasted an authentic Nyonya dumpling.
DeleteThat's definitely not a Nonya dumpling. Wonder if they made a mistake labeling it?
ReplyDeleteDon't think they made a mistake. This is a nyonya chang wannabe, hehehe.
DeleteLOL at the chang trying to be a Nonya one. I had my first ever 'nonya' chang recently and it wasn't blue either. It tasted peppery and coriander powder-ish. No idea if that's how a nonya chang is supposed to be like hehe.
ReplyDeleteI think your chang is also a Nyonya chang wannabe, hehehe. Nyonya chang is supposed to have candied winter melon inside with coarsely chopped pork fillings and partly blue in colour for the glutinous rice.
DeleteOk must continue the quest for an authentic one! The candied winter melon part doesn't sound attractive to me actually. I associate that with desserts.
DeleteI think the candied winter melon will blend in nicely with the meat so it will taste good.
DeleteI love chang too. I once bought a Nyonya chang and it was not blue and not tasty at all.
ReplyDeleteI think your chang is also a Nyonya chang wannabe. Nyonya chang is supposed to be very tasty and bursting with flavours.
DeleteYes, nyonya chang is supposed to be bluish and whitish... I bought mine at RM3.50 each, bought 10 from the Nyonya Makan listed in Facebook. They are from Ipoh so arranged to collect from them at their disclosed area...
ReplyDeleteWah, so cheap but are them smaller ones? Are the fillings slightly sweet?
