Cintra Food Corner

Since the Moh Teng Pheow Nyonya Koay (kuih) shop was not opened, we walked to Lebuh Cintra to try Penang's best rice dumpling (bak chang) and famous yam cake.

This is the shop

As can be seen above, they sell all kinds of rice dumplings (bak chang). I wanted to try the Penang Nyonya Dumpling (MYR5.50 nett) but it has sold out so I chose another type.

Yam cake at MYR2.90 nett per portion with a lot of yam inside. I like it because it is soft, tasty, not oily and not too salty. The garnishing consists of crushed peanuts and diced spring onions.

Hakka bak chang (MYR6.20 nett). It is not too oily and is soft. My friends did not like it because they say it is too soft but the softness level is right for me.

It contains a piece of pork belly, black eyed peas, one whole salted egg yolk and one whole chestnut. Not too salty. I read a post on another blog that this shop has opened outlets in Puchong and Kota Damansara so if I am in those areas, I will go look for this shop.

    1. I guess bak chang is not that popular in Pg but if you feel like eating bak chang in Pg, this is the place to go to.

  3. I could've bookmarked your recent posts to recommend to the visitor I will be taking with me to Penang this Friday. Yam cake and bak chang are good ideas of local food that is somewhat off the beaten track, you don't find many angmoh travel bloggers eating/writing about them.

    Unfortunately she flew back to Beijing because of family issues so she had to cancel her trip to Penang :(

    1. There's always a nice time if she is still interested. Some westerners can't take the taste of yam cake texture and taste of rice dumplings .

  4. The bak chang is pale unlike the ones that I am accustomed to. I love yam cake. I suppose you ate yours without any chili sauce?

  5. I love super soft bak chang, so this one will be ok for me. I wonder how this yam cake compares to the one I ate in Millenium 86.

    1. The yam cakes I have eaten before from a corner shop in PJ Seapark have more 5 spices taste, is softer and more pork lard taste and more oily. This one is less oily, more yam, not as soft and no pork lard taste. I have yet to eat the one at Millenium 86. Will tapao from there after cny since I suspect the old lady would close her stall for all 15 days of CNY.

    1. Many people do because the fatty parts of the pork belly make the glutinous rice very smooth!
