How much?

I was reading this post on "a Malaysian in France" blog and saw the "Chinese New Year Ang Pao Market Rate 2015" chart. Then I looked at the facebook of author of the chart and found that the chart has been revised so I included both charts below.

Nowadays, even singles give their parents ang pao money after they have started earning their own salary so the chart would apply to singles too. Does the ang pao money you plan to give out, fall within the rate of the revised chart?

Revised chart on their facebook page

The chart I saw on the blog I was reading

    1. The thing is if your angpow value falls into any of the range above - which I think it will unless you give a super big angpow, the recipient may guess your household income from the above chart, regardless of whether you follow the chart or not.

    1. Since you think it is a good reference so what you gives falls within one of the range lah?

  5. Chesh!!! Is there a fixed rate? I know the old folks in my younger days - you give how much, I must give the same in return. Cannot give less, lose face...cannot give more, don't give face to the giver. All about face! This is one traditional practice that we can do without.

I want to give more, I'll give more. Want to give less, I'll give less...or I any choose not to give at all. Same thing when going for wedding receptions. It's the sincerity in the heart with which it is given...not how much! No such thing as "Aiyorrrr!!!! So rich, give so little! So stingy one!!!" People like that, best not to be friends with them. Tsk! Tsk!

    1. The thing is people like that thinks that way but won't tell you so you won't know and still be friends with them.

  7. well I guess this is just a reference and not a must-follow.. afterall giving money in angpow is rather a symbol of (sending and receiving) blessing and should not be used to link to how rich you are.. what do you think??

    1. hahaha but the value one gives will surely fall under one range so the recipient may just refer to the charts to see how rich you are, hehehe!

  8. Hmm...low income, middle income, high income...or even no income....as long as we keep up with the tradition of giving out angpow every year...it doesn't really matter how much. Wishing you and your family health, wealth and happiness in the year ahead!

  9. I saw this (revised one) posted by my high school Kimia teacher on FB. He was using this to shut his students up after they demand angpao from him. He said: "there is no market rate for Students" :D :D

    1. Wah, so you mean you give more lah because the range given is quite big so most people when give, the value will have to fall into one of the range so if yours don't, then that means you give a lot lah, hehehe!
