Missing out

This is a famous banana leaf rice place that I did not know about so my friends took me there for lunch one day. True enough, it was very tasty with very crispy deep fried squid which is a must-order. We shared the meat dishes such as curry mutton, deep fried fish and chicken. I tried the crab rasam and just find it spicy though my friend said it tastes like tom yum to her. For 7 of us, the bill is MYR153 inclusive of drinks which means about MYR22 each.

This eatery is located in a detached house in PJ.

Upon entering the house, you will see the area where all the deep frying takes place. After entering the small entrance in the photo above, you will see the following area in the photo below:

More counter tops.

The cabinet with the cooked dishes is opposite the counter tops. From this area, we enter the door on our left to the rooms which have been converted into air-conditioned dining areas.

Sri Ganapathi Mess is the name of this place.

  1. Oh. A detached house. Nowadays more and more eateries are coming out from houses. I wonder if they have permit to operate like this. I wonder what the neighbours feel. For this case, maybe neighbours are happpy coz they can get good banana leave food easily :D

It is not very common in SG to have eateries coming out from houses unless they are shop houses

  3. Ooooooo...I love banana leaf! Kept telling the boss at that Indian/Indonesian place here to have that, maybe as a Saturday lunch special if not every day but all my pleas have fallen on deaf ears. Maybe this is South Indian, I wouldn't know - his chef is North Indian.

    1. i also wonder why the boss does not want to offer it - not enough demands for it?

  5. The only time I went for banana leaf was with my colleagues decades ago. Kids don't like punya pasal! This place is so hidden...how to find unless someone points the way.

  10. The name Mess is catchy. The house looks so familiar as I often pass the Kampung Tunku area. I love good Indian food like this and they always don't come cheap as the spices are so costly nowadays.
