Sangkaya at Sri Petaling

I was surprised to see Sangkaya occupying one whole shoplot in Sri Petaling so we went in to have a look and have an ice cream dessert after our early dinner. I noticed that they have chendol on their menu now and an extra topping costs MYR0.50 but then you pay first before adding toppings so should you forget how many toppings you are supposed to put on and took an extra topping, I don't think you will be forced to pay for it.

MYR9.90 nett only for the Signature 4 scoops coconut ice cream with 3 toppings and 4 small pieces of coconut meat. I can do without the toppings but since I wanted a lower cost per scoop, I went for the 4 scoops and it came with 3 toppings of your choice so I selected corn niblets, kidney beans and cornflakes.

The stand where they put the coconut shell on looks so nice, almost like a pewter ware. While we were eating the ice cream, they offered us two tiny paper cups of coconut shakes. Taste quite good to me, very thick and creamy but my friend says that it tastes as if it has milk in it. I think due to the creaminess.

On the menu, it says MYR10.50 for Signature but the bill says MYR9.90 nett. I wonder why. The shop is located at Jalan Radin Bagus 3, Sri Petaling facing a construction site.

    1. The kidney beans are cooked in syrup and we also eat them with a ice dessert called cendol here.

  3. Coconut is used as a milk substitute overseas like the US for instance - health benefits, they say. I use milk as a substitute for santan in my curry - it does not go bad that easily but for masak lemak, it has to be santan, not nice at all with milk.

Oh? Good for old forgetful people like me - I will conveniently forget how many toppings I've helped myself to. Hehehehehe!!!

  4. Your coconut shell needs a stand because it can't stand on its own I think (quite unlike the one I had in Uptown). The price is RM9.90 as they're absorbing the 6% GST for now since they're new. They offered you a sample taste of the coconut shakes they're selling in the hope of selling more, I guess.

  9. I should have asked for a stand when I was there. I had to hold the coconut shell and couldn't take a good picture of it.

    1. Here they give the stand by default. No need to ask for it.

  10. You know what? I thought I might have to go to Gurney to have it, as they say they will open in Gurney. But... this morning, I saw that they are setting up a stall in Queensbay Mall, within AEON supermarket area. They took over Scallop-Q stall front. I'm going to grow fat soon! >.<

    1. Setting up a stall is more practical than one whole shop lot. Don't think can become fat by eating such small scoops.

  11. Now I know that you, me and PH can sit down to eat Sangkaya Ice Cream.
I will try to find the real Thai recipe and ask my wife to make this ice cream.
This outlet sells nice sangkaya but it lacks of some coconut essence compared to the Thai stalls. Anyway, I mentioned before that Sangkaya means Dessert in Thai language.
They call ice cream as Ai Tim (South Thai dialect) and Ice Cream in Bangkok.

    1. Thank you for explaining the name. I think it has enough coconut taste else too much would be like eating coconut oil for the hair.
