Luffa

Luffa or Loofah (Luffa aegyptiaca or Luffa acutangula) is eaten as a vegetable when it is still not fully developed because when it has fully ripened, it is too fibrous to be eaten. Whenever I visit Taiwan, I will eat dumplings filled with luffa (Luffa Xiao Long Bao) because it is simply delicious.


Din Tai Fung branch in Taipei 101. Just look at the people in white hard at work making dumplings.


Luffa Shrimp Xiao Long Bao (dumplings) 10 in a basket (TWD 320/MYR36.5). This item is not available in Din Tai Fung branch  in Malaysia.


Be careful when you bite into the dumpling as the soup will flow out. Usually I just put the whole dumpling into my mouth before biting it. It is small enough.


The dumpling is filled with tender succulent luffa pieces. It is scrumptious with a light sweet taste found only in fresh vegetable.


Among the pale jade luffa pieces, you will find one small prawn which enhances the taste of the Shrimp Loofah Xiao Long Bao. I would say that this is a healthy and delicious dish.
