Old Chang Kee

OCK's curry puffs are big and fat (100g each). There are many types sold such as the basic curry puffs with only potatoes curry (MYR2 each), Curry'O with chicken meat, a slice of hardboiled egg, potatoes curry (MYR2.40 each), Sardine Puffs (MYR2.60 each) and Mutton Curry Puffs (MYR2.90 each). Prices are nett. I like Curry'O best. Apart from than curry puffs, they sell other deep fried food on skewers which I have never bought.

I think this is the traditional shape of curry puffs. To me, Ikea's curry puffs are shaped like Kaya puffs (kaya kok).

OCK originates from Singapore and has been here for more than 20 years and I think they are still going strong seeing the size of its outlets. This is the outlet at One Utama. One good thing about OCK is that they hire speech impaired (mute) people as customer service personnel behind the counter.

This is the outlet at Tesco, Mutiara Damansara. The size of this outlet is big too. I heard that there is another outlet at Avenue K according to SK. Are there many more outlets around the Klang Valley?

Ikea Curry Puffs

The long queue on a Sunday at around 4.30pm at Ikea external food counter. I waited in queue for 5 minutes to buy the curry puffs.

Apart from curry puffs, there were other deep fried food sold too such as deep fried salmon balls. Despite the long queue, there were enough curry puffs at the counter because they were being replenished at a fast rate.

I broke them into half. I remember Ikea curry puffs as having only potatoes in them when I ate them a long time ago but now like Old Chang Kee (OCK), they have chicken meat and a slice of hard boiled egg as the fillings in addition to the potatoes.

Taste wise, Ikea curry puffs fillings are sweeter, less curry taste and not as salty as OCK's, the size of the piece of chicken meat and hardboiled egg in it is smaller too. OCK's curry puffs' fillings have a stronger curry taste and I can taste a stronger oil taste in its pastry.

Price: OCK = MYR2.40 nett for one. Ikea curry puffs are sold at MYR1 nett each but if you buy 6, the price is MYR5.50 nett so of course everyone would buy 6 as it comes down to MYR0.92 each.

Based on price alone, Ikea curry puffs would win hands down considering that the taste is quite nice too although the curry taste is less and there are less fillings but the good points are it is less salty and the oil taste is not that strong.

What will be next?

STP highlighted a new feature of Google (blogger) in his post entitled "Can you find it..." and I was surprised when told in the comment that my blog has it too. As can be seen from the picture below, the "Word Verification" has been set to "No" but still the pictures came out to be selected for non-google user accounts / non-blogger usernames.

I tested it using my WordPress ID and found it to be true. Even though the setting is no, the picture selection will still pop out and is required. For those with WordPress ID who also owns a gmail ID (google account) could also login to their gmail ID and use that google ID to leave a comment and the picture selection will not pop up.

The only other way is to turn on moderation for all comments. When this is done, then there is no need to prove that you are not a robot. But I do not want to do that because I want the comments to appear immediately and not after I am available to approve them so I hope those users with no google/blogger account will tolerate this picture selection and continue to leave comment here because I truly appreciate each and everyone of your comments.

Then I found an explanation by google on why they did this (please refer to the screen capture below). They thought it would be easier for the users to select pictures instead of typing in text. But it is not easier when the pictures are ambiguous. I wonder what they would come up with next.

Golden Years

I was shopping for grocery one day and noticed that someone has parked an elderly couple in the supermarket. They were left there without their carers for quite a long time. Why were they left there? Because there was a huge TV hanging on the wall where they were facing. I guess their carers needed to buy some grocery but there was no one at home to look after them so their carers brought them along and parked them there to watch TV while their carers went to buy grocery.

Royce Potato Chip Chocolate

My neighbour went to Japan for a holiday and gave us this box of Royce chocolate for helping to feed his fishes. I have seen this locally selling at MYR53 for 190g, just too expensive for me to eat so I have never bought it. I wonder - is it more expensive or cheaper to buy direct from Japan?

The box says: "By breaking down old customs and producing consistently original items, we are pursuing a new level in chocolate enjoyment".

Inside the box, there is a sealed bag containing the potato chip chocolate. It is good for one month when kept below 25degree Celsius.

The size of the chip

Only one side of the chip is coated with thick chocolate. My family could not get used to eating potato chips coated with chocolate, they say it tastes kind of weird, the potato chip is thick, not those flimsy chips and quite salty and the chocolate is creamy rich and sweet. I can't decide whether I like it or not. Do you think you will like this combination?

Put Chai Ko

Put Chai Ko (Cantonese 缽仔糕) which means small bowl cake is a rice pudding steamed in a small bowl and it takes the shape of the bowl after it is removed from the bowl. I mentioned this in one of my post a few days ago and it brought me back to the days when I was a little girl and used to eat this Put Chai Ko.

So I went looking for them at the neighbourhood wet market and found them so I bought some to share with my family.

Brown sugar Put Chai Ko served with coconut flakes - MYR1 only. That is a tablespoon beside it to show that the Put Chai Ko is quite big unlike those small ones sold elsewhere.

Should be pandan Put Chai Ko served with coconut flakes - MYR1 also. This is new as I did not eat this type when I was young. I still prefer the brown sugar Put Chai Ko to this one.

This Put Chai Ko is a plain rice pudding so it is eaten as a savoury pudding with preserved vege topping and chili sauce and tim cheong (sweet brown sauce) like those for Chee Cheong Fun. The sauce are in the bags in the photo. MYR1.50 although it is the same size as those sweet ones but more expensive due to the toppings and sauces provided.

Uni

When we were walking to Ma Maison Tonkatsu Restaurant, we passed by Ichiro Sushi Bar and saw that they were having 25% off all items on their menu. The catch was that once the customers have placed their first order, the clock starts ticking and they have to leave one hour after that. One hour was good enough for us so we went there for another meal 3 hours after eating the deep fried oysters.

Today Special - Sea Urchin (Uni Gunkan Maki) 2 pieces - MYR45 (MYR47.7 after GST) served with pickled ginger slices and wasabi.

Top view. Uni is the gonads of Sea Urchin known commonly as Sea Urchin's Roe. It is rich, creamy and tastes like the sea (sea brine taste).

Salmon and Avocado Roll - MYR16.50 (MYR17.50 after GST)

We thought this was not our order because as you can see from the photo below, it looked nothing like what was shown on the screen. Grilled Salmon Roll - MYR19.50 (MYR20.7 after GST). They went overboard with the mentaiko. I did not like the abundance of mayonnaise and soy sauce (I think it was soy sauce) on this roll - too sweet and too salty for my liking.

Does this look like what was served to us?

Dragon Roll - - MYR19.50 (MYR20.7 after GST). There are 6 pieces in total, the photo above shows only 4 as we have eaten 2.

This roll has cucumber, egg, cream cheese and eel

Front view showing the cream cheese and egg. The cream cheese was very rich and it overpowered the taste of eel and egg so I do not think it is a good combination as their taste does not complement each other.

The 25% off seals the deal for us

With MYR25.12 off, the total bill came up to MYR79.90 only for 3 pax. One person was missing because he went to eat Menya Musashi Ramen which was also having 25% off all Ramen on their menu. Thus our eating spree ended for Mother's Day.
