Workday lunches

Apart from those who cook their own lunches in their office pantry, how do you decide on where to eat lunch? Would you consider driving out to another area for lunch or just eat at the eateries within walking distance of your office?

As much as I love to eat Japanese food, I have not eaten and will not eat at this restaurant during lunch because it is too expensive for workday lunches although to be fair, they do have some affordable bento sets but I prefer to eat the salmon bento set which is not cheap so it is a no go at this place.

Most of the time, I will eat economy rice at the food court which has about 7 to 8 halal food stalls but I only stick to 2 or 3 stalls - the chinese mix rice stall, vegetarian stall and chicken rice stall. I try to be early, if not there would be a very long queue for food.
This is the vegetarian stall that I frequent more than the chinese mix rice stall because I prefer the vegetable dishes here which are less oily. Although it says vegetarian it serves hard boiled eggs with sambal so my meals will always be yinchoy (amaranth), broccoli/cauliflower, and one hard boiled egg and the price would be around MYR5 to 6 depending on the portion that I get myself.

One day, there were no hard boiled eggs so I took this omelette. I asked the cashier, is this real egg or fake egg and she answered yes real egg but it turned out to be a fake omelette which is made from soy flour so it is like eating a slightly sweet pancake, double carb portion for me. I should have trusted my own judgement. When I looked at the texture of the omelette, it looks more like pancake than eggs. Oh well, my mistake. Never one to waste food, I polish off everything on the plate.

Sometimes, I buy a small pizza on offer at MYR3.90 nett from Aeon Big Supermarket and eat it for lunch and tea but it is quite salty so I don't do this often. If my memory serves me correctly, the above is a cheese tuna mayo onion pizza.

  1. I've always wanted to try the pizza from AEON but never got the chance to do it as the hubby always tell me he sees flies flying above them >_<

    1. They only cook this when I ordered for those individual whole pizza, not those precooked pizza sold in slices.

  3. Japanese here is expensive, will have to save for special days.

I hardly go for chap fan but I found one, no msg overdose - in my blogpost today...and tried another one yesterday, too much msg for me so I would not be going back again. Most places, they cook in bulk, no so nice...especially the vegetables.

Wahhhhhhh!!!! RM3.90 only for lunch! Ummmmm.....where are you keeping your millions? Muahahahahaha!!!!!

    1. I spent MYR3.90 for lunch to balance out the days where I spent MYR20+ for lunch. Can't be eating chapfan all the time as we do not have such a good deal as yours - 3 vege 2 meat for only MYR6.80 is a dream here.

  5. That vegetarian 'fake' egg does look like a real omelette! ;) Since they already sell hard boiled eggs, why don't they make real omelettes as well?

    1. Guess vegetarians would be expecting fake omelettes since they are vegetarians and it is easy for them to see that hard boiled eggs are not vegetarian food.

  6. I love Japanese too!

I recently am very big on the sashimi rice that some places have but it's too expensive to eat daily since it costs close to RM 40. I like the one at Sunway Giza, they have an option with raw scallops (very tender) and one with raw prawns (extremely sweet).

I don't get what a fake egg is though, you mean there's no egg in the omelet? Do they just use flour? How is that possible? What is the binding agent?

    1. When the lrt/mrt is ready, maybe I will travel to Sunway Giza for the food. The fake omelette is like a pancake so I guess they just use flour and soy milk or even soy flour to make it just like people make eggless pancakes.

  8. I never guessed there is a fake omelette in our country as I thought all fake eggs came from China. Next time I will pay attention to my food.

    1. Fake omelette as in a pancake made without eggs to look like an omelette. I have eaten fake sea cucumbers made by using konyaku in buffet restaurants.

  9. I'll go for a combination of convenience, comfort, cost and taste. Minus if have to exit the place smelling like the cook. And I will not go if I have to drive myself. :)

    1. True, garlic is not vegetarian for those buddhist vegetarians because garlic is a natural aphrodisiac.

  12. The staff should've been more honest, but then again, don't think authentic vegetarian stall sells eggs.

  13. I used to have bread, buns or biscuits with coffee for workday lunches. Too lazy to drive out and back within 1 hour in the hot sun and traffic. I prefer to stay in the air-con office. Ha ha...
