Bake your own

One day I was in TK bakery and I was surprised to see that one small piece of pandan layered cake costs around the price of a slice of cheese cake from Secret Recipe so that means that a slice of cheese cake from SR is not that expensive. That is the market price of cakes now so no wonder many capable people choose to bake their own cakes at home. Since I do not bake, I ordered and shared two slices of the cakes below with my friend.

Yogurt cake - raspberry topping - MYR8.80 nett for a slice. Can detect the yogurt taste but my friend says that the raspberry jam topping could be better.

Marble cheese cake - MYR8.80 nett for a slice. Cheese and milky taste. Reminds me of the Chinese New Year Dragon Cookie - the ones that were twisted like an S alphabet with ridges on the cookies. They satisfied my cheese cake cravings for now.

  1. I love SR cakes - the tall ones like their white chocolate macadamia but I am boycotting the ones here - they charge RM1.00 extra for the drinks compared to anywhere over at your side and in the end, we pay more for the drinks than the cakes. Absolutely ridiculous. I do not mind if the cakes are RM1 more as being a franchise, they need to send the cake mix and everything over. I hear they bake the cakes in Kuching even, they do not even do it themselves here.

    1. Really wonder what is the rationale to charge more for drinks at your end. The cakes here are also from a central kitchen.

    1. You are right, at those hipster cafes, a slice would cost between MYR14 to MYR20 or some even higher.

  5. Yeah, nowadays a slice of cake under RM10 is considered cheap already. Many cafes sell at RM10 - 13 a slice. It may be cheaper to bake one at home but then if you want to eat only a slice or two, who's gonna finish the whole cake for you? Hee...hee! :D

  6. That's why my solution is: don't eat cake. But that doesn't solve other problems, like vegetables, chicken, pork etc also naik harga lah >.<

Yesterday I talked to a teammate and discovered that he is a closet baking expert who could bake cheese cake, pandan layer cake etc. I was shocked because he was always wearing buttoned shirt and looked much too "man" to be baking (he said the same about me though). He said he only started learning recently, because he can no longer stomach paying more than RM 50 for a whole cake when the ingredients to bake it is less than RM 20...
