Black olives

I think the name of this pizza is SuperPapa - pepperoni, cheese, minced beef, black olives - from PapaJohn. I love to eat Pizzas with black olives on them.

Come fly with me

Year end now, annual leaves have to be cleared or else they will be burned. Yesterday I went with my extended family to the mall to do our weekly grocery shopping. We walked past Tim Ho Wan at 10.30 am and saw about 15 persons in the queue and thought why not take a virtual trip to HK.

The 30 minutes on the plane were well spent by doing some catching up with each other. Soon we were given the order chit to make our selections before we were ushered into the restaurant at 11 am when it opens for business.

Baked Bun with BBQ Pork - MYR10.80 for three in a serving and we order two servings. This is one of their 4 signature dishes known as "Big 4 Heavenly King".

I like the pastry as it is soft, light, moist, a bit chewy and a bit sweet as if having a light sugar coating over it. The pork fillings in it are on the sweet side. Overall it has a subtle taste, without any overpowering distinct taste so I guess big eaters can eat a few at one go without feeling satiated.

Vermicelli Roll with Pig's Liver - MYR10.80 - 1 of the 4 signature dishes. The liver tastes like how a liver should taste so it is all good except I find it difficult to accept the combination of HK ccf with the pig's liver taste. Give me pig's liver in a bowl of hot soup and mee hoon, I will like it but pig's livers with HK ccf - the pig's livers' taste seems too strong to go with HK ccf.

Pan Fried Carrot Cake - MYR9.80 - 1 of the 4 signature dishes. Very soft, full of white radish taste and very flavourful.

Steamed Egg Cake - MYR7.80 - 1 of the 4 signature dishes. I like this - very soft, moist, and very tasty - caramelized brown sugar taste. Will order this again.

Steamed Spinach (Por Choy) Dumpling - MYR7.80 for 3 in a serving. The best vegetable steamed dumpling I have eaten so far. Better than Din Tai Fung's steamed vegetable dumpling which is too dry.

Filled with spinach and not oily.

Plain Vermicelli Roll with sweet and sour sesame sauce - MYR7.80 - the magic is in the sauce. Nice unless you don't like the taste of sesame and peanut.

Beef meatballs - MYR7.80 - soft and not bouncy. I can taste citrus peels in them. We have eaten tastier ones in other restaurants in HK.

Osmanthus cake - MYR6.80 - very nice refreshing jelly with osmanthus flower and lots of goji berries. Only slightly sweet so can eat more at one go.

Mango Sago Pomelo - MYR8.80 - can tell that it is made with real mangoes but I can't taste the sago, seems to have melted.

Wasabi Salad Prawn Dumpling - MYR10.80 - I like that the prawns inside are not those overly bouncy types that have been soaked in sugar water/syrup, but just firm.

Can see the whole prawn in it.

What is dim sum without eating siew mai - MYR10.80 - taste just right, not too salty and not too porky.

Har Kao (Prawn Dumplings) - MYR11.80 - firm but not overly bouncy prawns in them. One of the better ones that I have eaten.

Can see the whole prawn in it too.

Congee with lean pork and century egg - MYR9.80 - can give this a miss since I find we can order similar quality congee in other restaurants too.

Hot chinese tea - MYR2 for one (refillable)

Glutinous rice in lotus leaf - MYR12.80 - we were too full by then so took this home without even unwrapping it.

The queue outside when we left. Now they have put up the guidance railings to help direct the queue.

Back home in the evening, we ate the glutinous rice.

Mushroom, waxed meat and meat in it but the rice is too compacted so a bit too firm for our liking.

Please click on the menu for a larger version where you can read the words. There are only 25 food items in the menu and we have ordered 14 items and our bill inclusive of service charge and tax came up to MYR197.75 because they calculated the 6% gov. tax on the total bill plus the 10% service charge so charged us an extra RM1.02.

Without an overly high expectation of the food here, I would say this is one of the best dim sum I have eaten in KL so far because I like the subtle taste although the choices are limited and the prices are high. People who like very flavourful food with strong taste like curry, sambal may not like the food here. I will definitely return for its baked bun with BBQ pork, steamed egg cake and spinach dumplings when I have an occasion to celebrate to justify spending some money.

Fish, fish, fish

Now that I have found this comfortable and clean eatery that serves fish for MYR3, I have decided to have my lunch there every work day if I can.

Normally I will select a dish with fish slices like this stir-fry kam heong (curried) fish slices with curry leaves (MYR3), bittergourd (MYR2), brussel sprouts leaves (choy tam - MYR2), and rice MYR0.60 so it costs MYR7.6 in total.

There were times when I went late and all the fish slices dishes were sold out so it would be a whole fried fish then as I prefer to eat fish than other types of meat (this is a halal eatery so no oink oink). Deep fried promfret in sweet and sour sauce - MYR3, broccoli, cauliflower and carrots - MYR2, lotus roots - MYR2 and rice (small portion) MYR0.60 so a total of MYR7.6 again.

Fish slices dishes sold out again so fried fish again - deep fried fish marinated in turmeric - MYR3. The fish is very crunchy so I ate it all, tail and fins. Rice  - MYR0.60, yin choy - MYR2, pak choy - MYR1.50 so MYR7.1 this time.

To eat lunch in a comfortable and clean environment, I think this price is quite reasonable. For a max of MYR8 a day which makes it MYR40 a week (5 workdays), I don't think I can cook different types of fish and 2 different types of vegetable dishes to bring to work for lunch everyday with this price so eating here is definitely worth it.

Is it even possible to cook 5 different types of fish and 10 types of vegetables inclusive of fuel and effort for MYR40 for 5 one-person meals?

Kochi Nyonya

MYR1.20 per piece at Nyonya Colors

I did not expect it to be blue at the bottom. Most probably the blue colour comes from blue pea flowers (bunga telang).

Very soft and sticky with coconut flakes as fillings. I prefer Kochi Santan but this is very nice too, sweet but not overly sweet unless you eat more than 1 at one sitting.

Very clear

I notice a new stall inside On On Bak Kut Teh coffee shop selling home made fish balls and fish cakes that they claim are without any preservatives so I order a bowl of the noodle to try.

Fish balls and fish cake Hor Fun with seaweed and very clear soup - MYR6. Good to eat when one is looking for a light-tasting meal.

Hand torn pan mee with fish paste (yu wat), minced pork with mushroom slices, and yin choy - MYR5.50 so I find this pan mee better value for money than the fish ball hor fun above.

V Luv 2 Q

Saw a long queue

The new Dim Sum Place from HK - Tim Ho Wan at the Gardens Mall. Will definitely try it out when there is no queue.
