Comparison - Penang Curry

Noodles (left) are thicker and more "springy".

Curry paste (the dark "spot" in the middle of each bowl): Both are spicy and salty. I can taste clove and fried shallot oil for the curry paste in the left bowl and lemongrass for the one in the right bowl. I did not put in any other ingredients into the bowls of noodles so that the original taste will not be affected.

These are the two packets: MyKuali Penang White Curry and Maggi Royale Penang Seafood Curry. Both are tasty, it just depends on which one suits your palate.

Early Thai dinner

We went to Thai Kopitiam again for our early dinner at 4.30pm but did not order from their set meal menu this time.

Stirfried glass noodles - MYR8.90 - with lots of squid rings and 3 small prawns. The glass noodles were soft and taste slightly sweet (due to the Thai fish sauce).

Green curry chicken rice - MYR8.90 - comes with a sunny-side up egg. Very appetizing meal on the slightly sweet side and only a little spicy.

Due to the hot weather, we ordered cendol (Thai version I guess as it comes with sweet corns) - MYR3.90 - sweet and refreshing. The two of us shared the 3 food items above but both feel very full so the next time we will just order 1 main meal and 1 dessert to share.

Good enough as lunch

On my "eat to live" days, I would simply eat "chap fan" ("economy rice") just to tick the box next to food on my daily to-do list. Stirfried lady fingers, stirfried long beans, a hard boiled braised egg and a little rice - MYR3.50 and my lunch is done.

Small durians

Yesterday, after a late lunch at 3pm, I walked past a small lorry selling durian "kampung" (village) and couldn't help myself so bought 4 small ones at MYR10 only. The vendor was selling them at MYR10 only for 2 big ones or 3 medium ones or 4 small ones and he told me all of them were the same when I asked him what were the differences between the big ones and the small ones. In the end he selected 4 small ones for me.

This photo was taken after I was done with them. Ate half on my own - my spouse only ate 3 seeds - and I kept the other half for the next day.

20 seeds - kept in the fridge for the next day. Not much durian meat on the seeds so 20 seeds are not considered much but ok for the price paid. Finished this tub on my own for dinner today without eating anything else.

Manmaru Homemade Udon

Niku Udon (Beef Udon) - MYR16.90 - the beef is thinly sliced and is so tender and tasty. Will definitely eat this again.

Kamo Nanban Udon (Duck) - MYR15.90 - this smoked duck meat is very tender and tasty although it does not have the usual strong taste of duck. The raw leeks are crunchy and their mild onion-like taste complements the taste of the smoked duck. Will eat this next time.

Chicken Katsu Curry Udon - MYR16.90 - the curry is not sweet like the usual Japanese curry and it is also not as spicy as Indian curry so to me, it is neither here nor there and I will not eat it again. There are some pickled red vegetables in it. The fried chicken thigh has a strong chicken taste which I don't quite like.

Asari Seafood Nabe Udon (Clam Udon) - MYR18.90 - we thought that the broth for this udon dish is a clear broth but it turns out that it tastes like Penang prawn mee's broth but without the spiciness. We can taste what we think is ground prawn shells in the broth. Not going to order this again although the clams are quite fresh.

A set lunch menu is available too.

When it opened for business last year, it is a self-service eatery but now it has changed and offers table-service only. The udon is firm and not like the usual springy soft udon we are used to eating but we will still come here for its Niku Udon and Smoked Duck Udon. Although the food may seemed a bit on the pricey side when compared to Ori Udon (also in Midvalley mall) but it is worth paying a bit more because I think the udon portion here is larger and the texture of the udon is really different (firm).

Heritage Village

Nyonya Nasi Lemak Acar Fish - MYR12.90 - the fried fish is crispy but I think the staff drizzled a spoonful of oil over it before serving so it was oily. The rice is soft and served warm.

Nasi Lemak King Combo (with chicken and squid) - MYR18.90 - the squid is quite spicy so the rice is not enough for both the chicken thigh and squid. Two of us shared this meal.

Assam Laksa set comes with a glass of iced lemon tea (drink not shown) - MYR11.90 - passable only.

Cendol - MYR6.90 - I will order and eat this again.

Nasi Dagang Ikan Tongkol

When we are at Midvalley Megamall, Belanga is one of our go-to places for food. It is not a budget eatery (except for its breakfast sets) but the food is tasty. We have been there many times and I still eat there even when I am alone. One of my favourite meal is "Nasi Dagang Ikan Tongkol" - Tuna Fish with Rice. I would keep half the rice in a container I brought from home for later as I could not eat all the rice in one sitting.

Nasi Dagang Ikan Tongkol (Tuna fish) MYR17.90 - comes with rice (slightly brown rice), half a hard boiled egg, raw vegetables, pickled cucumbers, a piece of tuna fish in curry.
