No Meat Day

This is day 1 of CNY 2018! Happy CNY everyone! May all of you have wisdom, patience, peace, courage and strength in this new year.

On day 1 of CNY, many people have the practice of observing a no meat and no fish day so a vegetarian lou sang (prosperity toss) it is.

What is in this vegetarian dish? 1. carrot 2. pineapple 3. pomegranate 4. green mango 5. lettuce 6. beetroot 7. raw corns 8. purple cabbage 9. seaweed 10. pineapple 11. cucumber 12. pickled young papaya 13. baby tomatoes 14. daikon making this dish very colourful.

There are also packets of: 1. crispy dough strips 2. candied orange peel 3. peanuts 4. pickled ginger 5. pickled winter melon 6. plum sauce 7. citrus sauce (I think)

It is packaged nicely.

A sturdy box is provided too. This box - a portion meant for 3 to 5 pax - costs MYR 48.80+ (MYR 51.75 nett).

For size comparison. The green and red packets contain pepper and 5 spice powder which we did not use because these ingredients taste good without them too.

  2. Oh? Never heard of this no meat on the 1st Day thing? I thought everyone would be celebrating and eating full swing.

I knew one old Chinese lady in Singapore, my landlady, she would eat plain rice with hardly much else all year and come Chinese New Year, she would cook EVERYTHING - pork, chicken, duck, fish, prawns - you name it, she had it! But the children never came home, just her and her old husband...and she kept asking me to join them to eat...and she would keep reheating and eating the same things the whole week.

    1. Vegetarian on CNY day 1 is quite common in KL. Some do it for half day only, some do it for full day.

Your landlady is just following tradition to cook EVERYTHING meat related because back in the old days, people are so poor that they only get to eat meat during CNY celebration.

    1. Thank you. Same to you too! I agree that yusheng taste is good even without the raw fish. Fish is there as a good symbol of "nian nian you yu"

    1. Thanks! Same to you! I rather not eat the raw fish as most restaurants that offer lou sang normally do not serve raw fish.

    1. Yes, I have seen it but it puts my appetite off to see it because it is like eating the dog.
