These are some layered cakes (kuih lapis/kek lapis) that my co-worker bought from Sarawak but I did not try them because they are too colourful to be eaten in my opinion.
Last year I had this argument with my handicapped friend over the "Layer Cake" prior to our trip to attend his workshop in Jakarta. I was talking about buying the famous Indon layer cakes from Jakarta and he was quick to reject my idea citing the unhealthy colour reasons. I was taken aback as I never thought the Indon ones used toxic colours as they looked so brownish. In the end he texted me images of this Kek Lapis which you "Do Not Dare" to eat. I wanted to die laughing. I might try to eat this colourful piece for just one experience as I am game to try everything under the sun for once in my lifetime.
I agree. These are indeed to colourful for consumption. I prefer those natural looking ones.
ReplyDeleteunless they state that they use natural colours.
DeleteTrue, if too colourful, I also "Do Not Dare" to eat :P

ReplyDeleteI have eaten those brownish ones from Indonesia many years ago. Do you dare to eat cat meat in Vietnam?
DeleteI won't mind trying it!!
Deleteyou sure are adventurous and daring when it is about food.
DeleteThey are famous for their colourful cakes... :)
ReplyDeleteI guess they are. That's why tourists buy them as gifts for friends back home.
DeleteIf I come across such colourful cakes, I also wouldn't dare eat them.
ReplyDeleteya too colourful!
DeleteI'm not sure if these coloring that they used is same as those in rainbow cakes or some colourful kuih lapis, but I will try once.
ReplyDeleteno idea if they are the same.
DeleteUnless you know it is from reputable kek lapis sellers who use natural colouring, then it is fine.
ReplyDeleteif use natural colouring, they must state on their packaging so consumers know about it. Thanks for dropping by while you are still on vacation!
DeleteYes, some are indeed horrendously colourful. Never mind natural or otherwise, I would not touch those either.
ReplyDeletenatural colours should be ok gua...
DeleteYeah, it is scary. Wonder what sort of coloring agent that was used.
ReplyDeletei expect they to be those edible food grade colourings.
DeleteI wonder if you, like me, also have the same issue with the M&M sweets?
ReplyDeleteI do have the same issue so I don't eat M&M sweets too.
DeleteAt least try, won't kill you heh.
ReplyDeleteBe my guest and go ahead. :)
