Thai Boat Noodle

*** Updated (Jan 2016): this eatery (Kuay Tiew Reua) is no longer at this location. I am not sure whether it has moved to some other location or is no longer in business.

Finally, we managed to get a taste of the Thai Boat Noodle at MYR1.90 per bowl (nett price). Left: Thai Kway Teow with soup. Right: Glass Noodles (dry).

Each bowl contains a very small portion, about 2 mouthfuls - with a pork meatball, a slice of pork, herbs and spices. Most people ordered around 5 to 6 bowls each. We only ordered one bowl each because we just wanted to have a taste of this noodle. Verdict: Strong taste of Thai spices and herbs.

These are the condiments provided for you to add as much as you like to your noodle.

We reached this eatery at 10.30am yesterday (Sunday) morning and this was what we saw - the shop with half of its roller shutter door down. Instead of a banner when I was here last time, the proper signboard has been installed.

Sold out so early!? So we left to return in the evening for dinner. At 4.30pm on the same day, we went there again to take a look and there was a sign: "2pm to 5pm - break" so we went for our early dinner next door and walked back at 5pm to have a taste of this noodle. By then almost all tables were occupied.

As the menu shows, one has to eat this many bowls to be full.

You have to make 2 choices only - 1) dry or soup 2) Thai kway teow, meehoon or glass noodles.

Interior of this eatery

At the time of leaving, a queue has formed. We noticed that many of the customers speak Thai fluently. I guess they are from Thailand and miss their homeland so they want to have a taste of home which they will find here.

This is another eatery serving Thai Boat Noodle a few doors away. I believe both shops opened for business on the same day which is 20th of July 2014. This Zab Zab Boat Noodle has a facebook page and from that page, it seems that there is a queue there also so Thai Boat Noodle seems to be in vogue now starting from Boat Noodle Restaurant in Empire Damansara.

    1. Good morning Princess Ribbon,

I think maybe your friends ate at another Boat Noodle eatery. The one at Empire Damansara because that one opened many months ago. These two only opened for business one month ago in July. I think you will need to eat 20 bowls. :)

  2. Even the soup version is so dark, like they just poured some soup onto the dry version and mix it all up.

    1. I read on some blogs that the soup version is dark due to the pig's blood that they put in.

  4. That looks good! I went to the Floating Market a long long time ago but I did not want to eat it - everything did not look clean and the stench from the water was horrible. I sure would want to go and try this one - must go early then. No queuing for me, that is a definite no-no. I would rather nit eat.

  6. Finally the Boat Noodles! So I take it that this is the only thing they serve here - the tiny servings of noodles. I wonder why so small servings? I guess that's the novelty factor or perhaps that's how it is supposed to be eaten. I can guarantee if I go there with my partner there will be two very high stacks of bowls hah..hah...

    1. Yes as you can see from themenu this is the only thing they serve apart from the drinks. The small.portion is like how they serve it in Thailand water market.

    1. I think 6 or 7 of these small bowls are equivalent to 1 normal bowl of noodle.

    1. Not keen to eat so many bowls. Maybe I will go try out Zab Zab boat noodle instead but just one bowl each.

  9. i would rather think it's another trend and gimmick huh?? reminds me of the donut fever, the pearl milk tea fever we had previously.. so now it's this 2 mouthful bowls of noodles.. i am curious if they serve normal portion, as i feel guilty having to eat so many bowls at once, muahahahaha!! :D

    1. But I don't know how many bowls you need to eat to be satisfied. no need to queue but still need to sit and wait for about 20 minutes.

  11. 1.90 for 2 mouthful of noodles isn't cheap actually..end up will be taking more bowls..perhaps 4-5 bowl to satisfy the hungry stomach...so it's like rm8 to 10 for a meal. Good thing is that we can try different style (soup/dry) and noodles for each ordering..Will try this someday when the crowd is lesser

  12. Hm 2 mouthfuls is a tad too small hor. Make it 10 mouthfuls la. So you didn't enjoy it all that much?

  13. Oh, this looks kind of special... never heard of this before... so how did it taste like? All black and dark so cannot see the noodles.. anyway, good to try then only we know, right?

    1. Noodles too little to be seen. Taste like Thai herbs and spices, very flavourful.

  15. Nice! This is the authentic one, better than the commercialized Boat Noodle and I'm always happy to hear people from the country the cuisine comes from is patronizing the outlet - always a sure sign it's good!

I'll be sure to go here next time. Thanks Mun! :)
