KTG Penang Char Kway Teow

I was in Penang for a weekend last month for a quick visit and had a chance to eat Char Kway Teow at one of the stall located in Lorong Selamat.

A large portion of Char Kway Teow - MYR12 nett - with added prawns and eggs. When you order a large portion, you will be asked which ingredient that you want more of. This large plate is not mine.

This is my plate of Char Kway Teow which I share with my friend. It costs about MYR8.50 nett I think but I am not sure. It has very little wok hei but I am fine with that as I don't care much for wok hei. I like the prawns a lot. They are juicy and not crunchy at all. I dislike prawns that are crunchy. By default 3 prawns are provided. This char kway teow stall is known for its bigger prawns. I would like to eat this again when I visit Penang but I doubt my friend will bring me here again.

KTG Cafe.

Everyone must order drinks or else pay an extra MYR1 nett to sit in this coffee shop for food. As we went at about 4 to 5 pm, the coffee shop is closing up so they did not enforce this. The 3 of us ordered one glass of drink only and was not charged the MYR1 each for the other two persons who did not order any drinks.

This is the Char Kway Teow stall cleaning up to close as we were  leaving. Ours were the last order I believe.

Can you read the prices listed? I couldn't.

  1. RM12 now? Gee! It was RM8 when I went years ago. Nothing sensational, pretty much overrated - I had others just as nice or even nicer...and cheaper elsewhere. The main draw would be those huge prawns. Charging for not drinking is pretty common in Penang - I came across that elsewhere. Maybe the stalls in front do not pay rent, I wouldn't know.

    1. I wouldn't mind paying 12 just to get the 5 tasty prawns. Just think of it as eating ckt in an air con upmarket place like mdm kwan.

  2. I miss this place so much. Those days I would sit on my scrambler beside the stall to tapao home for my family. Now the crowds are unbelievable and the price makes me wanna faint. WOW!!!

  4. Few years ago we went there to find the place closed. Until now I have not tasted the ckt yet. I have tasted other ckt in Penang and they are good.

Is Penang Char KT different from others?

    1. Yes because their kt is cut thinner and the texture of the kt is different.

  8. Your picture so small, who can read the prices like that lah? :P

This is the secondary CKT place in Lorong Selamat, isn't it? You don't care much for wok hei, means you don't care much for one of the key ingredients that makes the CKT good. Hmm... cincai find one CKT stall in any food court in Penang also can I think... cheaper...

    1. Superman can? I think there are three ckt stalls in lorong selamat. This one is famous for its prawns and I eat this for its prawns, not for the kt so cannot cincai find any stall lah.
