MaLaiKo

Saw this steamed cake made from brown sugar (MaLaiKo) listed in the Dim Sum Menu so ordered it.

I find it on the dry side and not as tasty as the one sold by Tim Ho Wan. This one does not have the fragrance of the brown sugar like the other one. Guess I will have to go back to THW to eat this although it is more expensive there.

  1. hmmm, first time i see a round ma lai kou like a bun.. or maybe this is the mini version, looking at the shape of the second photo, most likely what i used to have is a slice from the big ones, haha!!

  3. I grow up eating these.. Mum would buy malaiko and kaitanko (steamed egg cakes) from the morning market, and put on the table, and we'll have that with Milo for breakfast.. Or take to school for recess..I like the green and yellow one though, got pandan smell, nice..

  5. THW sells malaiko? I thought it is a HK chain, and malaiko is a Malaysian dish. "Malay kuih" ma... isn't it?

  9. The malaiko so small and cute. Usually its big one and cut into chunky pieces. Love the nice fragrant, soft spongy ones and go with kopi O!

  12. I've eaten a kueh very much like this bought from a van selling nonya kueh. The brownish kueh is sold in plastic cups. I need to try malaiko before I can tell if it is the same.

I love to eat this since I was a kid and usually bought from pasar malams in Penang.
