Please refer to the diagram above. A long queue of people (black dots) coming from A is going to get on to the escalator (pink colour). A person B wants to get on to the escalator and B comes from the green dots area so B stands right next to the escalator and patiently squeezes onto the escalator bypassing the endless queue of people coming from A.
The question is:
Did B just cut queue (is B expected to walk towards A and try to find the end of the line - there may be no end as more and more people are walking from A towards the escalator)?
Yes, B definitely jumped queue. Lots of these @#$%^&* kind of people around here, even cars on the road, cutting in from the wrong lane...so as to avoid waiting in line. These people have not been taught well by their parents and their education has failed them! In western countries, they would be told off by those people in the queue. They do not tolerate this kind of nonsense.
ReplyDeleteMmmm...what's the yellow colour?
Yellow colour dots are people from the other direction.
DeleteYes, seems to be a line cutter.
ReplyDeleteDo you often see long queues at escalators?
DeleteI think B cut queue kua, but I think I've never seen people from B going to A, then patiently and slowly follow the crowd and go up leh.. Usually people from B would just stand and wait and squeeze into the escalator when there's a chance..
ReplyDeleteI agree, sorry but if I were coming from B, I won't go and stand at the back of A just to queue up. It's just an escalator, but if queuing to buy stuff then I will go to A la!
DeleteThank you Hayley for being so honest. :)
DeletePrincess Ribbon, would you walk far to try to find the end of line A?
Deleteto people in line A that's definitely cutting the queue.. to people in line B that's actually opening a new queue to merge into the line.. so the problem is, there is a gray area here.. if the management has specifically drawn the queuing sign at line A, that would be a lot clearer who's right and who's not..
ReplyDeleteSo far I have not seen mall's management draw queuing line at escalators before. Hahaha!
Deletea very common scenario here in Malaysia: let say you have two counters and people queue up.. there is initially one line where people queue for either counter.. suddenly someone starts lining up right at either counter, the queue builds up and it forms two queue each for one counter.. the person who has queued longer may not be able to use the service first (as that depends on the speed of the counter he/she is queuing).. so is that cutting queue??
ReplyDeletep/s: I definitely support one queue for all, just like ambik nombor, first come first serve.. :)
Sometimes no space for one long q so break into two qs is better than one long snake.
DeleteWhen it comes to an escalator (not as clear cut as a road or a bus line or a counter queue), I don't think there is such thing as a queue. I've been on escalators where the people just come from every direction. Those people in B just happen to exit from the shops in lane B, so you can't really expect them to go to the end of line A. As long as B doesn't force his/her way through, I'd like to think that people are courteous enough to let you through. Then again, I might be wrong since I'm not physically present to see the actual lanes and queues.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you. To see this just go to any mall during peak season and you will see lots of people milling around an escalator with no actual defined queues.
DeleteIt must be particularly crowded that day. Under normal circumstances, anyone can enter from anywhere and I think (putting myself in the position of B) it may not be fair to expect B to walk all the way to the back to an endless queue. If I were B, I would go the entrance and politely get through.
ReplyDeleteYes it was really crowded in those popular malls during Christmas day.
DeleteIf there is clearly a queue (it should be obvious), then I will go hunt for the back of the queue. But I have to admit, I have never seen a proper queue at escalator before, I would probably just squeeze through like B.
ReplyDeleteIt was not as obvious as in school where you q two by two. This was a huge column or row of 3 to 5 people wanting to get on the escalators from A direction.
DeleteMuahahahaha... this won't happen in Malaysia. I would also scramble and rush from B into the lift after pushing them left & right...
ReplyDeleteJust kidding.
I only saw polite people waiting for elevators in US and Japan. They are so patient and cool.
DeleteEscalators. Hahaha hohoho.
DeleteJapan people are really polite.
DeleteMun, I like your illustration.. Very creative indeed :)
ReplyDeleteTq but it was crudely drawn.
DeleteHm were you the B? Inferring from the part you said B 'patiently' squeezed in. :)
ReplyDeleteYep if I were B, I would just go in from the side too.
One look and I walked to the escalator further away where there was not so many people.
DeleteThat's just BAD DESIGN pure and simple.
ReplyDeleteNo one cut the queue, I know this situation very well, and it's a design flaw in the shopping mall. B doesn't need to go to the YELLOW area if they just want to go up, there shouldn't be a backlog of people at A anyway and B should be able to merge in...and if the design of the mall is good, it should take equal time for B to reach the point he/she is now as if they had gone the A route.
You know what I mean?
Thus, B should not have gone all the way to the back of A coz the way the mall is designed (if well designed) makes both paths equally time consuming.
The next time I come across this I will take a photo to show you.
