Kau Kau

Brunch for two at Nyonya Color, Midvalley Mall.  

Nasi Lemak Beef Rendang - MYR13.75 nett. We have eaten this here a few times but this dish has never appeared here. I must have missed writing about it. A decent nasi lemak. The portion of rice is much smaller than a few years ago.

My favourite roti jala (was mentioned here previously) - soft and doughy. Roti Jala with Curry Chicken - MYR11.60 nett. There are two pieces of chicken in the curry - a whole drumstick and a small piece of thigh meat on bone with some potatoes. The curry is on the salty side. I wish they would just sell me the roti jala without the curry chicken because I could just eat those on their own.

We also ordered a glass of hot Teh Tarik (Pulled Milk Tea) - MYR3.70 nett and requested for it to be "kurang manis" (less sweet) and "kau kau"  (to be thick with a heavier tea taste). Total price: MYR29.05 nett.

All the Nyonya kuihs (minimum price is MYR1.17 nett for a small piece) in the glass shelves are calling to me but with limited stomach space, I could only look at them sadly because it was either them or roti jala and the latter won.

Kochi Nyonya

MYR1.20 per piece at Nyonya Colors

I did not expect it to be blue at the bottom. Most probably the blue colour comes from blue pea flowers (bunga telang).

Very soft and sticky with coconut flakes as fillings. I prefer Kochi Santan but this is very nice too, sweet but not overly sweet unless you eat more than 1 at one sitting.

Kochi Santan

Kochi Santan - MYR1.20 per piece. I am not sure what Kochi means and what language it is in. What I found online says Kochi means Kuih or Dumpling or Cake. Santan means Coconut Milk so I guess Kochi Santan means Coconut Milk Dumpling.

Open up the banana leaf wrapper and it looks like this: green and white dumpling made from glutinous rice flour with a dark spot in the middle.

The white part (a bit savoury) - coconut milk, the green part - pandan and the dark spot is the fillings - sweet browned coconut flakes (ye char). Interesting to eat this once in a while. There are many more other types of kochi sold here (nyonya colors) which I will try one by one later.

Nyonya Colors after renovation - many people because of its price (cheaper compared to other restaurants in MidValley Mall or Gardens Mall) and the fact that it opens very early.

There is a special breakfast set menu available before 10am. The main colour of this new look is light blue which I find to be too cold and not inviting enough but I guess it does not matter, just look at the crowd.

Fruit Rojak - MYR7.50 - green mango, pineapple, cucumber, jicama (sengkuang), and crackers with crushed peanut and fish paste sauce.

Roti Jala

Roti Jala with curry chicken - MYR10.85 plus 5% (service charge) at Nyonya colour. I prefer the roti jala to be soft and doughy like this one.

Red Rubies

A version of the Thai dessert - Tub Tim Krob - crunchy water chestnuts, jackfruits in coconut milk ice shavings from Nyonya Colors (MYR4.8 with an additional 6% for government tax).
