Bento Meal

This double decker bento set meal costs  MYR60 and it includes the usual appetiser of the day, chawan mushi, miso soup, pickled vegetables and fruits.

The top layer

Close-up: Tempura, Yakitori, Salmon Sashimi Rice.

The lower layer

Close-up: Salmon Teriyaki, Daikon, Prawn Sashimi

I have to say I prefer having just the salmon set than this double decker bento set because there is just too much food for me and I need help from my family to finish the food.

Old No

A meal from the lunch set menu - MYR10.90 with 10% service charge so it is MYR11.99 - at an Old Town White Coffee outtlet with the work lunch group.

Old town white coffee with ice, comes with the set so this is one time I broke my own rule and had a glass of iced white coffee during lunch.

Chicken meat masquerading as Char Siew in this Wanton Mee in Soup with some deep fried dumplings (wantons) and vegetables. Passable only.

This is a delicious soya pudding with cendol on top - MYR5 - at SS20 Fish Head Noodle eatery.

Lotus Root

I went to a new place (with air conditioner) that serves chap fan "mix rice" for lunch and this plate of food costs MYR7.50 with deep fried dory fish slices in Thai sauce, 2 mixed vegetable dishes and a quarter bowl of rice.

Lotus roots tend to turn dark after being cut unless the slices are soaked in a bowl of water with a little rice vinegar. The two mix vegetable dishes are: 1) stir fried lotus roots with celery 2) stir fried broccoli, cauliflower, sweet peas and carrots. I prefer the vegetables to be cooked until they are softer so it took me a long time to finish eating these not-so-soft vegetables on my plate.

Bitter gourd rice

This is steamed bitter gourd pork rice - MYR7.50 - more pieces of bitter gourd than pork meat served by Yau Hao Fook eatery.  The taste is quite acceptable for a fuss free meal.

Blanched Choy Sum vegetable - MYR6 - we requested for nothing to be added to it, just blanched and served. Prices are nett and we shared this meal between the two of us as I take only a little food as dinner.

Remembering

The ultimate pork noodle? With everything pork - liver, kidney, intestine, pork slices, minced pork but somehow we do not eat at this place anymore so I am not going to mention its name.

Once upon a time...

My spouse and I cooked almost all of our meals when we were living in UK because eating out was very, very expensive.

I even skinned a whole chicken as my photos above. To make it interesting, I did my best to keep the whole skin and whole chicken intact. I did it by looking up instructions on how to skin a chicken online. I like my chicken soup to be not so oily therefore the skin and fat must go.

Now, I no longer cook as I do not like to cook. After 4 years of cooking, I have had enough so now I eat out for all my meals.

Tk (Tong Kee)

TK egg tart - MYR1.60 each for those made with lard and MYR1.80 each for those made with butter. Tong Kee is now known just by its initials, TK.

Some egg tarts have shortcrust pastry but TK egg tarts have puff pastry instead with flaky layers. If I feel like eating egg tarts, I will go and buy two from TK, one each for us as I like TK's egg tarts best.

Buckwheat Noodle

Wankosoba set (5 assorted buckwheat noodle & silver cod rice set) - MYR33

This is the photo from the menu

Fresh Sanma Pressed Sushi (Nama Sanma Bousushi)- MYR26

Closed up

Nama Sanma Bousushi as in the menu

Seafood Hot Pot set - MYR33 - this does not look like the picture in the menu below because all the ingredients are now cooked in the soup and they are really tasty.

San Sann Vegetarian

Somehow we ended up eating here one day. Chinese spinach (yin choy), spinach (bo choy), pumpkin with a little rice beneath all the vegetables - MYR3.50 only.

This is the vegetarian economy rice shop that serves really cheap food because it is operated by Buddhists. This outlet is located at Kuchai Entrepreneur Park, off Jalan Kuchai Lama (same row as Tangkak Beef noodle shop) so if anyone wants to eat only vegetables then this is the place. They also serve those "fake meat" which is actually made from vegetables like the stalk of mushrooms or soya products.

Win Heng Seng

Once a month, during Sunday or a Public Holiday, we would take the trouble to drive down to Imbi just to have breakfast.

Pork noodles - MYR7 - with pork intestines, livers, pork meat slices and pork kidney in a sweet porky soup.

My favourite Char Kway Teow - MYR6 - dry and not salty as I requested the vendor not to put any salt in it and he kindly obliged. The portion is small so between the both of us, we will always order another bowl of noodle as this is a once a month visit.

This is the other bowl of noodle that we will order every time - Pork Meat Balls Noodles (Sam Kan Chong) - MYR8 - the noodle is full of the taste of lard with the minced pork in it. A glass of Cham Ping (iced mixed coffee and tea) costs MYR2.20 and there are many other stalls here - selling mini egg tarts (very popular and long queue), chicken rice, chee cheong fun and etc but every time we will only order from these 3 stalls.

The Char Kway Teow Stall

Left: Pork Noodle Stall - Far Right: Pork Ball Noodle Stall

See the cars parked alongside the shop - it is always fully packed with customers inside so you need to be really early if you want to avoid the crowd.

Nice and early with the bright blue clear sky

Best Kaya Roll

This is the best kaya roll that I have ever eaten - MYR14.50 for one whole roll. The price was only MYR10 for a whole roll 19 years ago. I have been eating it for that many years and the taste is just as good as before.

The cake is dense unlike the texture of the popular JJ Swiss Roll and I prefer kaya instead of cream. The cake tastes like those baked "egg cake" (kai tan koh) - a slight eggy taste - and is a bit sweeter than I would have preferred but this can be excused as other kaya rolls are 2 or 3 times sweeter than this one.

This old lady has been selling her baked goods (egg tarts, kaya jam, kaya rolls and etc) for as long as I know of this stall which is 19 years ago, at the entrance of a lane off Jalan Yap Ah Loy in the center of KL town.

I like this kaya roll better than those sold by Yut Kee. If you don't believe me that this is the best kaya roll, you can read this famous blogger's review.

Petola

A little rice with 1. curry chicken (a small piece of chicken breast meat) 2. water convolvulus (kang kong), 3. water cress 4. bean curd sticks with petola - MYR7 - I prefer to eat water cress boiled in soup because it is softer cooked that way. When stir fried like this, the water cress is quite tough until it is difficult to masticate. The petola on the other hand is soft, tender and tasty.

Sweet Bean

At about 5.30pm, we were looking for a place to have dinner around this area and none of our usual eateries were ready to serve dinner yet so we ended up at this dessert place.

I chose to have dessert for dinner since this is a dessert place. A combination of peanut paste sweet dessert soup and sesame glutinous rice balls in ginger sweet dessert soup - MYR4.80 - good for sharing.

My spouse decided to have this stew beef noodle - MYR12.90 - quite decent I would say although it does not look good.

My spouse also ordered this water chestnut sweet dessert soup (hot) - MYR6 - there are barley, mung beans and lotus seeds in it too. We finished eating the ingredients in it but did not finish drinking the sweet soup.

Shop front - same row with Ipoh Chicken Rice in Sri Petaling and their service charge is 10% with no govt. tax.

Uji Cha

We ate at Nana's Green Tea again and this time we ordered a meal from their lunch set menu.

Beef Hamburger Rice set - MYR18.80 - comes with a drink of your choice from a fixed drink menu. The sauce for the hamburger is tomato sauce.

We chose a pot of hot green tea as the drink for our set meal and ordered Matcha Kanten Slushy with black beans and green tea jelly from the ala carte menu - MYR9.80 - the Uji green tea in the pot has a very special fragrant green tea aroma.
