Fine Noodle

Braised Pork Knuckles Noodles - Very flavourful but not salty. The pork knuckles were braised to perfection, soft meat but not too soft skin. The skin still retains the bouncy texture. I have forgotten the exact price but I think the price is from MYR19.80+ to MYR22.80+ depending on whether you choose 3 or 5 pork knuckle pieces. The noodle portion is quite dainty too.

Egg tarts - these egg tarts were bigger than the mini ones we ate last time and we think the mini ones are more delicious. THW now has special breakfast sets from 8 am to 10 am for about MYR10+ to MYR18+ but since we were not there that early, we did not get a chance to order these special sets.

The menu for the special dishes that include the pork knuckles noodle that we ordered.

Tanjung Tua Lang

Sometime back I was craving to eat fresh steamed tilapia fish so we went to a nearby restaurant well known for its fish dishes to have lunch at 11.30 am. Back in 2012, the famous blogger Baby Sumo has written about the tasty Signature Steam Tilapia Fish here which is served with lots of crunchy pork lard. You can see the huge amount of pork lard served on the steamed fish here.

As I do not like to eat pork lard, I chose to have the tilapia steamed with minced ginger instead and we decided to have black tilapia instead of red tilapia. As there were only two of us, we requested for a medium sized fish but were given quite a big one as can be seen below.

A big black tilapia fish steamed with freshly chopped ginger - MYR55.10 nett. The fish is very fresh and does not have any muddy or fishy taste to it. As it is a big fish, the flesh is not as silky soft as I would have preferred it to be. Perhaps this fish has lots of exercise so the flesh is "well toned" and there is only a very thin layer of fatty bits at its stomach portion. Each of us ate one side of the fish and there were lots of meat.

The ginger paste was freshly made so we took the paste still left on the plate home as it would be a waste to throw it away. This fish dish is not salty at all so it is perfect for those who are watching their salt intake.

We also ordered a bowl of superior yin choy (amaranth vegetable) soup cooked with bits of century egg and nothing else luckily because we were very full after finishing all the food.

My plate of rice (half portion only) that costs MYR1 since one normal portion costs MYR1.50 per plate.

The fish is as fresh as it could ever be because it was still swimming in this fish tank when we stepped into the eatery.

That big fish costs us  MYR52+ (MYR55.10 after adding in 6% GST). The bowl of vege soup is MYR11+ (MYR11.65) and 1.5 bowl of rice for the two of us costs MYR2.50+ (MYR2.65). The total bill came up to MYR69.45 but the lady boss rounded it down to MYR69.

Krathong Thai Sri Petaling

Krathong Thai eatery has been in Sri Petaling for a few years now but about a year ago it moved to a new shop unit also in Sri Petaling because its previous site is being redeveloped. It is now located above the Pat Kin Pat Sun Cafe which is behind the Grand Shanghai Banquet Restaurant. You will need to walk up two flights of stairs or take the elevator to the first floor.

Fried Kway Teow - MYR8.90 nett. The portion of kway teow is just right for a small eater. It tastes like Cantonese style stir fried Noodle (wat dan hor) with adequate wok hei (taste of food stir fried in very hot oil). I like that the noodle comes with prawns, squids, baby corns, mushrooms, broccoli, cauliflower, carrot and choy sum vegetable.

Pineapple Fried Rice with cashew nuts, pieces of pineapple, raisins in the rice - MYR9 nett. I like that this fried rice is not salty and has no MSG because I was not thirsty at all after eating it. The rice is yellow in colour because it is stir fried with turmeric powder which makes it tastes good.

Red Ruby Dessert - MYR3 nett and Pandan Glutinous Rice with Mango in Coconut Milk dessert - MYR3.50 nett. The portion is just nice to round up the main meal with sweet food. I will order these two desserts without fail whenever I eat at Thai eateries if the price is not over MYR5 nett for each.

This Red Ruby dessert is made up of coarsely shaved ice with water chestnuts cubes encased in red tapioca flour and slices of jackfruit drenched in coconut milk. This coconut milk tastes good unlike those that came out of a can or packet which has an artificial taste.

The total bill came up to MYR24.40 nett as there is no service charge and no GST. All prices stated in the menu are nett prices.

We went at 4 pm so there are plenty of seats available. If we had placed a reservation using offpeak.my we will get up to 20% off our meals at off peak hours so the next time we visit this place, we will use the offpeak.my app to make a booking.

There are tables on the balcony for people who would like to sit in the open air, away from the air conditioned area.

Yuzu Parfait

I shared this Yuzu Parfait (MYR23.80 nett) with my friends at Nana Green Tea eatery. Yuzu is a citrus fruit that looks somewhat like a yellowish mandarin orange with a unique fragrant taste which I like when I ate it in Kyoto so that is why I bought this parfait to eat. The many layers are (from bottom to top):
1. Yuzu jam sauce with slices of yuzu peel and small cubes of yuzu jelly in it. The sauce has the nice Yuzu fragrance so it tastes good.
2. Vanilla ice cream is quite sweet.
3. Corn flakes to give it a different texture, a crunchy texture
4. Two bigger cubes of warabimochi which is a jelly like cube made from bracken starch. Bracken starch is made from the rhizomes (underground stems) of bracken which is a large fern. I prefer the warabimochi I ate in Kyoto which is more refreshing whereas this texture is more gooey.
5. A big white ball of Yuzu sorbet. This is the best, gives very refreshing taste. I wish they would just sell this Yuzu sorbet on its own.
6. A smaller brown ball of Shiro-an which is a sweet white bean paste made from white kidney beans. I don't quite like this paste because it tastes just sweet to me, without any other taste.
7. Whipped cream at the top drizzled with Yuzu sauce.

Overall, this dessert is very sweet so unless you have a very sweet tooth, it is best to share this with more than one friend.

Nana has monthly special sweets and special food menu. Please click the above for a bigger image to read the food items for the June's special.

This month, they have Yuzu citrus specials and I chose to have the parfait instead of the hot cakes (pancakes). I wonder what specials will they have for July.

Vege version

Glutinous rice with mushrooms, chestnuts and black-eyed beans/peas cooked by my mother. It is delicious! Can be considered a vegetarian meal since there are no meat, onions, and garlic in it.

Atria

Went for a walk in the new Atria, a shopping mall in Damansara Jaya after it has been totally renovated. It has many eateries. One of the popular ones is Pho Vietz with a long queue during meal hours so we did not try it when we were there.

A bit of UK here?

2 Pizzas for the Price of 1

Ben's General Food Store has a new branch at the Gardens Mall. It opened at the end of May 2016 and since then, it is having a "2 Pizzas for the Price of 1" promotion until 26 June 2016 (Sunday) for dine-ins or takeaways so yesterday we bought two pizzas to take away.

The size of all their pizzas are 12 inches in diameter and of the thin crust type. If the two selected pizzas differ in price, the lower priced pizza will be free. Other than pizzas, they serve a variety of salads, roast chicken meals, pasta, coffee and fresh fruit juices with a special menu for children meals.

Truffle Calzone (suitable for vegetarian) - MYR39 nett. According to wiki online, a calzone is an Italian oven-baked folded pizza. This calzone is a 12 inches pizza folded in half and stuffed with black truffle paste, truffle oil and mozarella cheese. Parmesan cheese and chives are sprinkled on top.

As I love to eat cheese, I find this calzone very tasty. The black truffle paste tastes earthy and goes well with the cheeses. Not for those who cannot take the pungent smell of cheeses and truffles. The thin crust pizza is folded in half so when I bite into it, the crust is thick and chewy, simply delicious!

For the 2nd pizza, I ordered Carnivorous at the same price - MYR39 nett - beef pepperoni, beef bacon, chicken sausages, lamb meatballs, mozarella and tomato paste. This pizza is for meat lovers so I shared it with my siblings. Taste is nice but I prefer pizzas with thick crusts.

The menu for pizzas. Which two pizzas would you have ordered? I did not order seafood pizzas because I feel that seafood such as prawns, mussels and squids do not taste good as toppings on pizzas.

The exterior of Ben's General Food Store in the Gardens Mall. There is a small play area for children inside so this is a family friendly restaurant. Very suitable for parents with young children and toddlers.

SugarBun Sarawak Laksa

The 3rd stall just sells one item which is  Sarawak Laksa so we bought a bowl to try at MYR12 nett. There are about 4 to 5 prawns in it to justify the price. I have eaten a few Sarawak Laksa in Klang Valley at 5 different places so I have a more or less idea of how it tastes like so to me, this broth has a slightly mild spices taste but in general the Sarawak laksa broth spices taste is there.

This is how it looks like in the menu but it is just for illustration and does not reflect the actual bowl of laksa.

Sabah Giant Garoupa

From the "Giant Garoupa Fish" stall, we bought a bowl of Sabah Giant Garoupa Mee Hoon Soup at MYR28 nett. There are about 7 slices of Garoupa Fish that are fresh and without any strong unpleasant fishy taste. Other ingredients are tomatoes, pickled vegetable and white tofu. There is no milk in the broth unlike those KL style fish noodles which is fine with us but we would prefer the broth to be less murky and less oily.

This is the menu for this stall. Apart from dishes with Sabah Giant Garoupa, they also serve chicken mushroom meals.

Here is a close up photo of the Sabah seaweed pickles. The white translucent things that look a bit like sea corals in the photo above are the Sabah seaweeds. They are somewhat crunchy.

SugarBun in KL

I have been reading a lot about SugarBun in STP's blog so when he informed me that SugarBun is now in KL, I wanted to try the fish burger but unfortunately SugarBun in Menara Hap Seng is more like a food court with 3 separate stalls (used to be 4) and they are not serving burgers at the moment. I hope they will eventually include burgers, especially fish burgers in their menu.

Currently the 3 stalls are: 1) Broasted chicken 2) Sarawak Laksa and 3) Giant Garoupa Fish. From this review in May 2016, there used to be a Beef Noodles stall but when I went there yesterday, that stall wasn't there anymore. I thought I might have missed it but then I found another review here in June 2016 that clearly shows in one of the photos that the stall next to the "Broasted Chicken" stall is vacant. I wonder why they removed the "Beef Noodles" stall.

Below are the food items that I bought from the "Broasted Chicken" stall.

Borneo Eco Fish Meal - MYR20 nett. The deep fried tilapia is very crispy until you can eat the tail and fins as well. It does not have any muddy taste but some parts of the fish, especially the belly parts are quite oily. The Sabah seaweed pickles are very appetising. The sambal condiment has a nice fragrant salted fish taste to it. The rice included here is mixed grain rice.

Two pieces Broasted Chicken Meal with savoury rice - MYR12 nett. The chicken is very flavourful and my friend finds it to be a bit too salty. I requested for breast meat and thigh but was told they could only give one big and one small piece so they gave me a piece of thigh meat (big) and one drumstick (small). The savoury rice tastes of chicken and has raisins in it.

The menu for the Broasted Chicken Stall. One piece of broasted chicken costs MYR4 nett.

As we purchased our meal separately, I only have the chicken meal receipt.

These are the two other stalls which I will write about next as we also bought food from them.

McD Bubur Cha Cha

RG and Stacy told me about this McD pie in their comments for the McD Cendol Sundae so I went and tried it since the last pie I had was the Tropical Pie 4 months ago. The price for this pie is higher at MYR3.50 nett as compared to MYR2.90 nett for the tropical pie.

Bubur Cha Cha is a dessert where sweet potatoes cubes, yam cubes and sago are swimming in a sweet coconut milk broth so this pie is a simplified version of the dessert in pie form. A good attempt because the taste is somewhat there.

The fillings in this McD Bubur Cha Cha pie are yam or taro cubes coated in coconut milk sauce (santan). I find it rather dry because the coconut milk sauce is just enough to cover the yam cubes. The good thing is that this pie is full of yam cubes unlike in the previous pies where there are very few pieces of actual fruit and lots of gooey sauce. This time it is the opposite, no gooey sauce, just enough coconut milk sauce to cover many taro cubes and some may like it more because of this.

Beef it up

A very tasty bowl of beef hor fun noodle from O & S coffee shop in Paramount, PJ at MYR7 nett only with thick beef pieces, tripe, daikon and a beef meatball. I like eating the daikon in the beef noodle soup but I seldom find them included in beef noodles (with soup) around KL.
