Dates Walnuts Soft Candy

Still on Wed 7 Nov 2018 Day 2 in Taipei - 2 pm - we took the mrt to this Sheng Kee bakery because I wanted to buy Dates Walnuts Soft Candy for my friend and she likes the ones sold here the best. These Dates Walnuts Soft Candy are quite commonly sold in Taipei but not in KL. I have not see it being sold in KL at all.

Address: No. 15, Section 3, Roosevelt Rd, Da’an District, Taipei City, Taiwan 106

The full name of Sheng Kee Bakery.

Modern looking shop. Here is an article about this bakery and its products.

南棗核桃糕 - Nán zǎo hétáo gāo (Nanzao Walnut Cake). Nanzao is a type of dates. These are the dates walnuts soft candy, individually packed. I bought a few packs for my friend. Don't remember how much they cost.

Ingredients.

This photo is sourced from the internet. This is how the Dates Walnuts Soft Candy looks like. I ate a lot of these Candy when my mother brought them back whenever she visits my grandmother in Taiwan. They are very tasty. The dates parts are soft and the walnuts are crunchy. Very tasty candy.

Recipe to make this date walnut soft candy at home. Another recipe can be read here. Zhen Yi Xuan bakery also sells this Date Walnut Soft Candy called Nanzao Walnut Cake at TWD 500 (about MYR 72) for 420 g.

10.40 am - my brunch of bread, kaya, and Milo cereal. I always eat bread directly from its bag.

3 pm - a piece of pork meat, half a hard boiled egg and rice. Every Wednesday we will go buy takeaway seafood meehoon and pork vinegar rice or braise pork rice from Choy Kee and Lucky Alley coffee shops for our meals. Dinner is just biscuits and one orange shared by two pax.

    1. Yes on the sweet side. Not too sticky. Texture is like dates. Your wife should make some with your son and daughter. They would enjoy eating this candy if they like the taste of nanzao. Dark dates.

    1. My grandmother is born in China but moved to live in Taiwan and has been living there ever since. Will you try to make this dates Walnut candy since you are good in baking and cooking? Must use dark dates Nanzao.

  5. Interesting candy. I like walnuts, not so much dates as in candy. Bought some red dates snack (somerhing like baked and crispy) from China and still have a lot of it at home. Kids dont like it. Haha.

    1. Well this is not like candy as in sweets. It is something like soft nougats. The dates parts are dark dates and soft. Have to try it to know whether you like it or not.

  6. My mouth and saliva is drooling at the Dates Walnut Soft Candy. Taiwan is great in making these candies and nougats. I love them. I think I ate these similar Dates Walnut Candy in X'ian as they grow lots of dats and wolfberries there. However I always felt safer to buy from Taiwan than China and you could guess the reasons.

    2. Not a fan. I'd take some dates during Hari Raya occasionally but totally fine with not having any.
