No Rice Chap Fan

On Tuesday 11.may.22, went out to buy lunch for the Elderlies and ourselves.

*** Golden Chopstick Sri Petaling ***

11.48 am - bought 3 packs of food from the economy rice stall of Golden Chopstick eatery in Sri Petaling:

1. Small container: my lunch of no rice, broccoli cauliflower, 2 pieces of nam yee chicken breast meat, yin choy, pumpkin, and potatoes slices for MYR 9 nett.
2. Big container: his lunch of a small portion of rice, cabbage, leeks, fried tofu minced meat, sweet sour chicken, and brinjal for MYR 8 nett.
3. Elderlies lunch: a small portion of rice, minced pork patty, slices of nam yee pork which looks dry, bitter gourd and petola for MYR 7 nett. The feedback is the minced pork patty gets stuck in between the teeth so I will not select this dish anymore in the future.

*** Swee Hing coffee shop ***
1. Hot hainan char drink at MYR 3.20
2. Pork yimi soup at MYR 8, a price increase of MYR 0.50 which I believe is caused by the price of pork which has gone up
3. Two packets of hand torn pan Mee soup with Yin choy at MYR 8 each. We shared one packet for dinner.

One packet is for the Elderlies. They love it. I think it is because they haven't eaten this pan Mee for about 1 year now.  Didn't buy for them because this pan Mee is best eaten immediately or else the hand torn pan Mee will stick together to be a big lump of dough. We usually deliver lunch to them at around 10 am but they will only eat lunch at 1 pm or 2 pm so the noodles would be stuck together. This time they shared this one packet of pan Mee immediately upon receiving it at 11.30 am so the noodles didn't stick together and they found the hand torn pan mee to be absolutely delicious.

*** Bread ***
Kk mart and speedmart didn't have any gardenia wholemeal bread so bought Massimo wheat germ loaf bread at MYR 3 from kk mart for the Elderlies.

Sunday MYR 2 per entry

On Sunday 6.mar.22, I discovered that I have added on 2 kg within one week when I put on my outing clothes to go to Taman Desa to buy food as per our routine. Now, we need to pay MYR 2 per entry by tng card only on Sunday to enter into the inner road in front of Sepetang coffee shop. Free pass through for 15 minutes.

11.33 am - I bought economy rice for all 4 of us as lunch. In the above photo, there are two packs:
1. Small portion of rice with one steamed salted chicken thigh, egg tofu and soyknots.
2. No rice, long beans, okra, broccoli+cauliflower+celery, and one hard boiled egg.
I ate the firm lean ribs meat in the water cress soup. They didn't use dried squid in this soup so the taste is clear and refreshing. He detected an out of place taste with the soup but I don't know what he is referring to because the soup tastes absolutely fine to me.

Elderlies lunch:
1. Rice, steamed salted chicken thigh, brinjals and egg tofu.
2. Rice, steamed salted chicken thigh, soyknots and scrambled stir fried eggs bits
3. Old cucumber ribs soup

The price for the above 4 packs of economy rice is MYR 33 nett.

Sing Kee Kitchen
Three types of soup for MYR 21.90 nett:
1. Old cucumber ribs soup
2. Water cress ribs soup
3. Chicken feet herbs soup for next day.
4. 2 siew Bao and 2 egg tarts for MYR 8.80 nett.

5 pm - ordered the above two rice fish fillets dishes for the Elderlies dinner to be delivered directly to them. Stay Home

On Monday 21.feb.22, we stayed at home and just ate the remaining food from the previous days.

1 pm - our shared lunch of rice from Friday and economy rice dishes from Sunday. There is still one bowl of remaining petai minced meat mixed with kung Po chicken cubes in the fridge and one portion of cooked plain rice from Saturday.

For dinner, I ate 7 of 8 slice of the pizza from Monday, one week ago. He ate one egg tart and one siew Bao from Sunday. So we didn't order any food on this day.

6 dishes

On Sunday 20.feb.22, we went out to buy bread and lunch for the Elderlies and also food for ourselves.

As we have remaining plain cooked rice from Saturday and Friday, we just buy 6 dishes from the economy rice stall at Tuck Tuck Tei coffee shop at MYR 18 nett: egg tofu, soyknot, petai minced meat, kung Po chicken cubes, broccoli and cauliflower vege dish and brinjal.

Summary of all the food we bought:
Tuck Tuck Tei coffee shop
1. Economy rice stall 6 dishes MYR 18
2. Beef wanton Mee dry x 2 MYR 17
We gave one pack to the Elderlies for their lunch.
3. 3jc mihun x 2 MYR 15
We gave one pack to the Elderlies for their lunch.

Sing Kee Kitchen coffee shop

We gave 2 siew Baos to the Elderlies for their teatime snack

Pak kopi food truck
1. Cham cold drink MYR 3.90
2. 3 layer coffee jelly cold drink MYR 5.90

Price has been lowered from the previous time I took this photo.

Sunday Routine

Every Sunday we will go to Taman Desa to buy food from Sing Kee coffee shop at around 10.30 am to 11 am so that more dishes are ready for their economy rice aka chap fan stall and Sepetang coffee shop which opens early at 6.30 am. Yesterday Sun 25.4.21, we did exactly just that.

Sing Kee coffee shop - I brought my own big container for the economy rice and selected plain rice, curry chicken with potatoes, yin choy, tofu, minced pork patty and mixed vegetables - 2 meat dishes, 1 tofu, 2 vege dishes and I think the price is MYR 10 nett. Both of us shared this big tub of chap fan for lunch at 11.45 am.

This economy rice stall uses a big sheet of transparent plastic sheet as a hanging curtain to shield the dishes from the customers. The staff will scoop the dishes and the customers just need to point at the dishes.

Siew yuk with plain white rice at MYR 7 nett from the same coffee shop. He ate a few pieces of roast pork with the economy rice for lunch and kept the remaining portion for dinner.

5.49 pm - He stirfried the siew yuk rice with one waxed sausage from about a year ago and some vegetables and left 6 tablespoons of this rice for me which I ate.

6.11 pm - I then ate my small portion of rice with my regular condiments which are curry potatoes, tiny prawns curry, peanuts, anchovies, half an hard boiled egg, long beans, cucumbers from my favourite nasi lemak stall at Sepetang coffee shop at MYR 7 nett. No nasi lemak for him cos he won't be able to eat 3 portions of rice in one day.

Left egg tart is from Sepetang coffee shop and right egg tart is 1 of 3 from Sing Kee coffee shop. Each one costs MYR 2 nett. I also bought 2 pork siew baos at MYR 2 nett from sing kee coffee shop. Total spent on egg tarts and siew baos is MYR 12 nett.

The Sepetang egg tart seller asks me to buy pineapple rolls and so I bought one tub at MYR 17 nett. There are about 26 or 28 pineapple rolls.

The pastry crusts taste a bit salty. The fillings of pineapple jam paste are sourish sweet and he said that the paste covered the slight butter taste so he can eat these pineapple rolls. I find the fillings taste like the dried snacks assam boi, sourish sweet.

*** Cleared Food from Fridge ***

Sunday 25.4.21 morning at 9.30 am, I ate all the remaining risotto from the previous day, sat. The bottom layer of the risotto rice is still soft so I ate the risotto directly from the fridge without heating it up.

Remember this salted egg yolk.croissant bought from Dotty's Pastries at KLCC on sun 18.apr.21? I kept a huge clump of salted egg yolk fillings from it in my fridge to be used as bread spread.

What a huge lump of salted egg yolk fillings from inside the croissant!

On Friday 23.apr.21 at 2.30 pm, I spread half of it on two slices of whole meal bread.

Melt it a bit in the microwave.

Use a 3rd slice of whole meal bread to soak up the melted salted egg yolk fillings and ate all 3 slices of bread. Tastes just like salted egg yolk lava bao aka lau sar bao.

After eating the salted egg yolk fillings with 3 slices of bread, I ate all these raw bitter gourd from my brother's home vegetable garden. They were refreshing and made me hungry very soon after that, way before my early dinner time. So if one doesn't feel like eating, just chew some raw bitter gourd to regain one's appetite.

9.30 am yesterday, sun 25.apr.21, I used all the remaining fillings on a other 3 slices of whole meal bread.

Melt the fillings a bit using microwave.

What a golden bread spread! I can't believe one salted egg yolk croissant takes me 3 days to eat the fillings. Lucky I didn't dine in for it else I would need to consume this huge amount of fillings at one go.

Under 20 for 2

Tofu, half salted egg, broccoli and rice. These are my favourite picks.

Broccoli, minced pork patty, minced tofu and rice. These two dishes with a coffee cost below MYR 20.

Piping hot Bak Kut Teh for 1 pax.

Yam rice for 1 pax but both of us shared these two dishes for MYR 17 nett.

These 3 dishes for 2 pax cost MYR 21 nett for lunch. I always choose broccoli, tofu and nam yee chicken pieces if they are available.

Egg is Vege

We did a test. We went back to the mixed rice stall at Popcorn Food Hall, Midvalley and bought a bigger piece of Soong Fish (松鱼) with rice and steamed egg just to see how much they would charge us.

Previously just a small piece of Soong fish costs us MYR 5.80 nett. This time the egg was counted as Vege so this dish was charged according to the price list of 1 meat and 1 vege so it is MYR 8.50 nett which means the rice and egg is only MYR 2.70 nett from deducting 5.80 from 8.50 so it is better to buy according to the price list instead of just taking 1 piece of fish.

Just as Libby said, this fish does have a slight "earth" taste as some would described it. The egg was smooth and tasty with fragrant garlic oil poured over it after it has been steamed.

The mixed rice stall occupies 3 stalls as in stall 1,2 and 3.

A Place to Save

My friend's takeaway economy rice with 2 meat and 3 vege dishes:
1. Braised pork belly and intestine
2. Sambal Petai
3. Deep Fried Nam Yu Pork Belly
4. Four angled beans stirfry
5. Mushroom and carrots stirfry
It only costs MYR 6.50 nett. This is a good price.

Popular Stall

There is always a long queue at the mixed rice stall at Popcorn Food Hall, Midvalley during lunch time.

I guess for a stall in a shopping mall, these prices are to be expected but these prices are not considered very expensive as there are more expensive mixed rice stalls in other food courts in this mall. I think 2 veg dishes with rice at MYR 7.50 nett is less worth it than 2 meat dishes and 1 veg dish with rice at MYR 10.50 nett unless one is going for a vegetarian meal.

My friend felt like eating fish so she took just one small piece of Soong Fish (松鱼) from this stall as shown in the photo above. The price of ala carte Fish/Seafood is between MYR 4.80 to MYR 8. We were expecting a worst case of being charged the max price of MYR 8 nett. Luckily they did not go that far and only charged MYR 5.80 nett. I guess if we want to save on eating fish, we would have to cook fish dishes ourselves at home.

This plate of chap fan (economy mixed rice) with no rice and only 2 vegetable dishes:

costs MYR 4.50 nett.

Too hot

It has been a while since I last ate "mixed rice" ( 杂饭 or 什饭) for lunch.

A little rice with 3 dishes - sardine, broccoli, and a stirfry-dish of ladyfingers, brinjal and long beans - MYR6.50 nett. A cold drink of coffee mixed with tea (cham) costs MYR2.40 nett so it is a total of MYR8.90 nett for lunch on a working weekday. Normally I do not order drinks for myself but I walked under the hot sun from my workplace to this eatery so I had to order a cold drink to cool myself down and to prepare myself for the 11 minutes walk back to my workplace under the same hot sun.

This is the "mixed rice" stall at New SeaView Coffee Shop at Paramount PJ.

*** I will be having a post a weekday until I have cleared my backlog of food photos.

Usual meal

A regular plate of "chap fan" (mixed rice) - one meat portion (Nam Yu Pork Slices) and two vege portions (Broccoli and Nai Pak - 奶白菜 which means Baby Pak Choy). For my explanation of "chap fan", please click here. Nam Yu is made from fermented soya beancurd with red glutinous wine lees (hong zhao/ ang zao/  红槽). I think this plate of "chap fan" costs MYR6 or MYR7 nett.

Knotted beancurd sheets

My lunch back in 2015, bought from the vegetarian stall in the food court at The Sphere, Bangsar South. Surprisingly the vegetarian stall sells hard boiled eggs in sambal gravy.

Economy blood

What have we here?

Coagulated pork blood cooked with spring onions, red chili and ginger. One of the dishes available at our usual economy mixed rice eatery (chap fan).

Not my plate of economy rice (chap fan) - MYR6
