Peniaram

This kuih has many names. Kuih denderam, kuih peniaram, kuih genderam, kuih derang, kuih benderang, kuih telinga keling dan kuih genderang are some of its name. It is said to be based on Adhirasam, a sweet pastry from India.

It is made from rice flour and gula merah aka molasses and deep fried so it is crunchy outside and soft inside. Have you eaten this before?

I bought the smallest portion at MYR 5 Nett for 25 pieces.

This is the roadside stall selling it.  The banner say Peniaram Kedah.

Drizzling Whole Day

It was drizzling on Saturday night and when I woke up on Sunday 3 Jan 2021, it was still drizzling, good for sleeping in but I got up to do my weekly grocery shopping at deMarket supermarket in taman Desa because it opens early at 8.30 am and it can be accessed directly from the main road. Parked near the entrance under an awning so was sheltered from the rain. Free parking for 2 hours with a purchase of MYR 30 per receipt. By 9 am, we have completed our grocery shopping. Not many people because of the rain and early timing.

On the way back, saw the old lady and her son by the roadside selling Kuih under a big umbrella in the rain so stopped the car to buy MYR 20 worth of food from them so that they may go home early once their products sold out.

10.10 am - Bought a prepacked packet of 3 chai kuehs with jicama dried shrimps fillings and a prepacked packet of 3 pieces of pumpkin Kuih. Each packet costs MYR 4 nett each. Taste good. Ate one each at 10.45 am.

They are also selling savoury red bean pork bak chang at MYR 4 nett each so I bought one to try.

4.30 pm - shared it for dinner. Can't really taste the red bean because the 5 spice taste is stronger.

Bought 3 purple yam Coconut Kuih at MYR 5 nett because I like this Kuih the best amongst all the Kuih that they are selling. Since the coconut will go bad very fast, we ate all of them immediately when we got back home. I ate 2 at 10.30 am. They are kind enough to sell me 2 other Kuih for MYR 3 Nett when one costs MYR 1.70 nett when I told them I want to use up all my MYR 20 which was all the cash I brought down from the car. I chose one white radish Kuih and one chu yap Kuih.

10.10 am - not my nasi lemak from Sepetang coffee shop with white small octopus curry. My packet of Nasi Lemak with tiny prawns is in the fridge because I couldn't find time and stomach space for it on Sunday.

7.20 am - shared this 3jc Mee hoon MYR 7 nett bought the previous day from the coffee shop next to lucky alley that sells duck rice. I must remember to look at the name next time. The soup has no pepper taste and is a bit on the salty side.

Mee jawa from Sepetang coffee shop MYR 7 but without any noodles. I asked for the gravy to be put together so I had to eat it at 11 am before everything inside turned too soggy. After eating this, I was so very full since I also ate the Kuih and a bit of nasi Lemak sotong.

5 pm - it was still drizzling so he cooked red amaranth soup with one century egg. Satisfying hot soup on a drizzling cold day. The soup is purplish. Can you spot the century egg?

7.30 pm - I ate my portion of red amaranth and drank the purplish soup. Yummy!

Yam Coconut Kuih

10 am - I went to buy duck breast meat at Jalan Hang Tuah 4 roadside stall and saw a new makeshift stall in between the duck stall and the nian gao stall selling Kuih. As before, I couldn't resist buying the Kuih to try. There are 4 types so I buy one each at MYR 1.70 each but the sellers ask me to buy 6 at MYR 10 nett so I say ok and added one white and one dark green made from ramie leaves.

This is the chu yap Kuih with the skin made from ramie leaves and it has choy poh fillings. Savoury sweet taste. For the past two purchases of chu yap Kuih from different shops, the sellers told me the Kuih has fillings but both times, there were no fillings at all. It is either the sellers didn't know or they intentionally misinformed me. This time, this seller told the truth and there is choy poh fillings. Tasty Kuih.

White Kuih. I bought two of them.

Crunchy jicama and dried har mi fillings. Can taste strong pepper in the fillings. He likes the strong pepper taste.

Mung beans fillings. Almost similar to angku but with thicker skin and has strong shallot oil taste in the mung bean fillings. He says this mung bean Kuih is considered a savoury Kuih.

I like this purple Kuih the best because the skin tastes of yam and there are lots of coconut shreds (ye zhar) in it. I thought the coconut shreds would be brown after frying the coconut shreds in brown sugar but it was not and I think it tastes good without the brown sugar.

Unfortunately as coconut shreds or any food with santan turn bad very quickly in our hot weather, when I ate this at 11.14 am, I could detect that it has turned bad slightly but only very very slightly so I ate the whole Kuih and I am ok.

11.48 am - as this is a Sunday 27 Dec 2020 d285, we went to Taman Desa De Market supermarket to buy groceries and also our Sunday nasi Lemak with small portion of rice, one pack each at a total of MYR 14 nett.

12.24 noon - used up the remaining mien si (taochu paste) pork ribs bought from Lucky Alley on the previous Sunday 20 Dec 2020 to stir fry instant noodles with added choy sum, coriander and a small red capsicum. I ate a tiny bit only just to taste it as I am very full from eating the Kuih and Nasi Lemak.

7 pm - dinner was shared rice with sour spicy mustard greens with added duck meat and duck gizzard.

One portion of rice divided for two pax.

8.22 pm - my portion. I wanted to clear this sour spicy mustard greens dish bought on Friday so I had to eat it this late. Ate slowly and completed the task at about 9.30 pm.

Updated on Monday at 1pm - yesterday at 12.30 midnight, I find it difficult to breathe because I believe my dinner was too big a portion compared to my usual dinner at 5 pm and I ate too late from 8.30 pm to 9.30 pm. No next time.

Talam

Apparently all kuihs made in a talam is called talam kuihs. Talam (BM) means tray.
Today we have:

seri muka kuih on the left
                         vs
green pandan talam on the right.

Which one do you prefer?

I prefer seri muka because the green part of the green pandan talam tastes strongly of alkaline / lye water / kansui.

More talam kuihs. Corn bunga telang talam and yam taro talam. The yellow part is very eggy and tastes a bit of corn. The bunga telang doesn't have a specific taste but the glutinous rice is savoury. The pink part tastes like those red layers in red white layers kuih and there are cubes of yam in the white savoury parts.

Of these four, which one do you like best?

7 packs of Aroma Nyonya kuihs at MYR 2.20 nett bought from Swee Heng coffee shop, Sri Petaling on the previous Saturday.

*** Thursday 23  July 2020 d128 ***

9.48 am - breakfast of ham Dan pei Dan congee (MYR 7.50 nett with add-on deep fried intestines too) with self added siew yuk and ytf at MYR 1.60 nett per piece.

1.10 pm - shared lunch of 3jc from the previous day with ytf but I was still full from breakfast so I kept my portion for dinner.

My favourite ytf white tofu.

4.10 pm - my early dinner of my portion of lunch. Does that make sense?

Cassava

Cassava is Ubi kayu. These two kuihs are made from Ubi kayu. Bingka Ubi vs Getuk Getuk. Which one do you prefer?

I like both, especially when the taste of the Ubi is strong and there are shreds of Ubi kayu in the kuih. These two packs are by Aroma Nyonya and costs MYR 2.20 nett per pack bought from Swee Heng coffee shop, Sri Petaling.

Here are the links for the recipe for both. Seems pretty straightforward to make for good cooks like PH:

This recipe is another online recipe showing step by step how to make Getuk Getuk Ubi and it has enticing photos of this kuih. Once you look at it, I am sure you will want to make this kuih at home.

*** Sunday 19 July 2020 d124 ***

7.30 am - not my breakfast of Mee Hoon, egg, ham, bok choy cooked in the previous day's soup from the takeaway pork hor fun Mee Hoon.

10.45 am - my breakfast of one whole pack of 60g tiger biscuits with 13 pieces and one pack of 4 munchy butter crackers sandwich.

1 pm - was in the vicinity of this Tuck Tuck Tei coffee shop so bought takeaway lunch from here.

Had to walk through these tables to get to the hawker stall to place my takeaway orders.

Siew yuk bittergourd rice at MYR 8.50 nett.

Finally got my ying yong hor fun Mee Hoon wat tan hor at MYR 8 nett from a hawker stall in Tuck Tuck Tei coffee shop, Taman Desa.

1.45 pm - my portion of wat tan hor lunch. The wok hei was so strong that after 4 hours I still have wok hei burps.

Yam puff and salted egg yolk lotus pastry at MYR 2.60 nett each.

Crispy batter but oily. Yam paste inside tastes good but the minced meat is too salty due to the choy poh bits inside.

2 Chicken siew bao and 2 pork siew bao at MYR 1.80 nett each. I also bought 3 salted egg yolk lotus pastry and 3 yam puffs so total price is MYR 22.80 nett.

The siew baos are bought from Sing Kee Kitchen coffee shop, taman desa.

The siew bao cabinet.

We couldn't finish this rice so we kept this remaining amount in the fridge for our next day's meal. After eating the wat tan hor, one yam puff and one salted egg yolk lotus pastry, I was very full so I didn't eat any dinner after 3 pm.
