Talam

Apparently all kuihs made in a talam is called talam kuihs. Talam (BM) means tray.
Today we have:

seri muka kuih on the left
                         vs
green pandan talam on the right.

Which one do you prefer?

I prefer seri muka because the green part of the green pandan talam tastes strongly of alkaline / lye water / kansui.

More talam kuihs. Corn bunga telang talam and yam taro talam. The yellow part is very eggy and tastes a bit of corn. The bunga telang doesn't have a specific taste but the glutinous rice is savoury. The pink part tastes like those red layers in red white layers kuih and there are cubes of yam in the white savoury parts.

Of these four, which one do you like best?

7 packs of Aroma Nyonya kuihs at MYR 2.20 nett bought from Swee Heng coffee shop, Sri Petaling on the previous Saturday.

9.48 am - breakfast of ham Dan pei Dan congee (MYR 7.50 nett with add-on deep fried intestines too) with self added siew yuk and ytf at MYR 1.60 nett per piece.

1.10 pm - shared lunch of 3jc from the previous day with ytf but I was still full from breakfast so I kept my portion for dinner.

My favourite ytf white tofu.

4.10 pm - my early dinner of my portion of lunch. Does that make sense?

    1. You are ok to eat these talam kuihs compared to biscuits? I prefer ytf brinjal than bittergourd because for bittergourd the fish paste is much more in the middle than bittergourd whereas I prefer eating the end parts where there is more of bittergourd.

    1. Yes, they are super lemak! Ah, so you won't be able to decide on which one to buy if you only want to buy one.

  5. To me kuih talam is the green and white one only. The rest... are not talam. :p This is my fav and when done well should not have the kansui taste. The white part should be salty and lemak, the green part fragrant with pandan and not too sweet. The other types I wouldn't pick except possibly the taro one.

    1. Yes, I also know that one as kuih talam until I read that all of them are considered as kuih talam. My husband ate the same kuih and he says nice, no kansui taste. I guess it is because he ate the green and white part together whereas I ate them separately to taste their individual taste.

  6. Wah! I didn't know any kuihs made in trays are talams! Then why do they have the pulut tai-tai named this way? I am just curious.....

I love to eat most of the kuihs in your photos. During the lockdown MCO, I ate too much Nyonya Kuehs until I had flatulence.

    1. That's what I read online about talam = tray. I think different origins. Some kuihs are created from nyonya baba culture but some kuihs are purely local kuihs. Pulut Tai Tai should be originated from nyonya baba culture. Hahaha, I think you can tahan your own wind punya smell.
