Regent Pandan Layer Cake

Finally I get to eat the original Pandan Layer Cake. I ordered one 500g Pandan Layer Cake and one 500g Yam Layer Cake but then I was informed only Pandan Layer Mix Yam Layer Cake is available so I ended up with 2 x 500g Pandan Layer Mix Yam Layer Cake and I gave one away.

This article on timeout dot com website says:
"According to a feature by the Malay Mail, it was Regent Pandan Layer Cake Shop’s owner Cheng Yew Ho who invented the pandan layer cake about 35 years ago, using a sturdier cake base to hold the dense jelly-like pandan filling (made from fresh pandan juice, santan and hoen kwe flour). Due to popular demand, Cheng also opened the iconic Golden Bake bakeries in SS2 and Klang."

The two articles by Malay Mail in 2016 make good reading:
1. Last chance to eat: Klang’s Regent Pandan Layer Cake Shop may be closing its doors (Sunday, 25 Sep 2016)
2. Klang's Regent Pandan Layer Cake Shop to stay open after all (Monday, 03 Oct 2016)

Thanks to Malay Mail, the owner decides to stay open and so I get to eat the original cake after missing the Pandan Layer Cake I bought from Golden Bake bakery in SS2 many years ago. Previously, I will just buy an inferior Pandan Layer Cake from Aeon Bakery to eat until I found Lisa's Pandan Layer Cake on fb.

Side view. 5 layers. The cake is moist and light. A bit eggy and with real yam pieces in the yam layer cake. No artificial taste at all.

Two boxes of 500 g each (MYR 32 nett each).

The box cover shows the famous Klang shop for Pandan Layer Cake - "Regent Pandan Layer Cake Shop". Maybe one day I will get to visit the shop if I travel all the way to Klang.

The two boxes stacked on top of each other in one bag. Delivery fees is MYR 13 nett by Lalamove arranged by the FB organiser for this group buy. Received yesterday at 3.47 pm. Paid for and ordered on Saturday 25 April 2020 d39.

*** Monday 4 May 2020 d48 ***

7.57 am - Shared this breakfast of CKT bought on Sunday 3 May 2020 d47 from Swee Heng. Big portion (MYR 7 nett) and we add two fried eggs ourselves.

My portion.

Not that much but enough.

8.54 am - I can't believe that I did not eat any Honey Butter Biscuits from Texas Chicken since they are bought on Thursday 23 April 2020 d37. All 10 of them have been sitting in my fridge for 11 days so I force myself to eat one and was so very full after that.

1 pm - Not-My-Lunch of wanton noodles with char siew and wantons bought on Sunday 3 May 2020 d47 from BC & S Enterprise Coffee Shop. The soup is from the same day delivered with the siew yuk rice.

This pork trotter vinegar dish (MYR 26 nett) is bought on Tuesday 21 April 2020 d35 (13 days in the fridge) from Mama Cooking. This is half of the original portion. Look at the layer of solidified oil.

So I scrapped off all the solidified oil. Mama Cooking put black beans in this Pork Trotter Vinegar Dish. Since it is in the fridge, the gravy has solidified into jelly so it is like eating trotter jelly.

1.51 pm - I scooped half the gravy jelly and one piece of thick skin and meat into the rice from siew yuk rice delivered on Sunday 3 May 2020 d47, The gravy jelly is so appetising - sweet and sour and the cold meat and skin is tasty so I finished all the rice and ended up being so full that I did not eat any dinner at all. Just a slice of the Pandan Yam Layer cake at 4.30 pm and that is all the food for Monday 4 May 2020 d48.

  1. I do that too with the solidified fat when taking any cooked meat dish out of the fridge.

    1. Ya, cos it is easy to remove when it is solidified.

  2. This pandan layer cake is my favourite. I have not tried this original brand and will ask my friend to buy from Klang for me. The size is just nice and not too big like 1kg cakes.

I also cannot believe that you took so long to eat the Honey Butter Biscuits!! If I bought them take away from Texas Chicken directly, I would have munched it still warm while driving home.

My blog has problem this morning till now as I could not see the comments. I only managed to see your comments via the email notifications. Other posts are okay. Strange la.

    1. I have refreshed my blog by re-posting the same article. If you don't mind to 'cut & paste' the 5 comments to the updated one, I will delete the haywired post later. Thank you very much.

    2. Yes, do ask your friend to get it for you from Klang. I have other things to eat to finish but I will eat one a day to finish them. Yes, quite strange. Good that you reposted it.

    1. I have not tried TK pandan layered cake but I don't think it will be as nice as this one but I may be biased as I grow up eating pandan layered cake by Golden Bake, SS2, PJ. But I know for sure the pandan layered cake sold by Aeon bakery is inferior because it has artificial taste because I do buy it to eat when there is no other choices to get pandan layered cakes. Lolx

  6. The pandan cake looks nice and soft. I still have half a bottle of black vinegar and all I need to buy is a pig trotter.

  7. The pandan layer cake looks good. I will like it since got pandan and yam. I usually don't stock up food as i like to eat my food fresh. I just buy what is enough for that very day.

  8. However during this period, we have no choice but to stock up.

You must have enjoyed the pandan cake very much.

Ya can see the solidified oil and fats when you freeze those dishes. This shows our food sometimes can be so unhealthy unless it is homecooked food.

    1. Yes, enjoyed the pandan cake very much. Sometimes home cooked food will also have lots of fats if fatty pork bellies are used.

  9. I bought pandan and yam ones recently. Much preferred the pandan one as it's more fragrant.

    2. You went to the shop in Klang to buy? Not far from your place?

    3. FAR. Happened to have an obliging Klang colleague who helped to buy. She's moved on to another client though so no more access to this shop.
