Add Fish

We noticed the table next to us has additional fried fish slices in their fish head noodle so we enquired about it and was told that we could add the fish for an additional MYR5 to the MYR17 for a small portion of fish head noodle so we did just that at this Soon Lei eatery.

The deep fried fish slices are different from the fish used in the fish head noodle. We think that they are from dory fish and are a bit salty so we don't think we will add them again next time although they taste quite ok otherwise.

  1. Oh, that is quite costly to add if those are indeed dory fish.

    1. Despite being a little too salty, they taste quite good. MYR5 only for 6 pieces is costly to you?

  2. Fish is your favourite, is it?

  3. I wonder how big the serving is. If that is one of those small individual claypots, RM17 is expensive, ok if it is a big one for two or three to share! RM5 for the extra dory is ok, so many pieces, they all use that for their fish and chips, all the western joints here, and it's definitely over RM10 a plate for maybe two miserable pieces.

    1. MYR17 is for one person's portion but enough for two small eaters. I agree that MYR5 for the dory is ok. The fish head and meat in the noodle is not dory.

  4. Wow! Quite pricey for the whole claypot. But fishes are expensive and I still love them.

  5. I have tried fish noodles with fried fish pieces but I didn't like it because it was too hard. I prefer fresh fish slices.

    1. This fried fish pieces are not too hard. They are like fresh fish slices with a coating of thin batter.

  7. Mention dory and the first thing that came to my mind is that they are frozen.. so normally I do not order when I heard that. Last night the place I went to, the lady also mentioned that we can change from fish head to dory fish, and I said no thank you.. hahahaa..

    1. This one, we did not change but add the dory fish slices to the fish head noodle which is not dory fish.

  8. I always try to remember to ask what type of fish before I order. I don't like dory fish especially in soup and noodles.

  9. Fish is so expensive nowadays. I just had ikan pati at a Malay place for dinner just now. It's made with tempoyak and you can choose either the head, middle or tail. Being Chinese and a fish lover, I chose the head. It's pretty good but a little on the expensive side.

    1. Can be considered worth it if you like to eat dory fish.

  11. I'm bad at identifying fish so I never ask. Quantity looks decent for RM5.

    1. Quantity is ok. They were deep fried nicely too with tender flesh. Just a bit over salty for me.

  12. I still remember those days when I accompany my mom to the pasar and the fishmonger auntie sold the dory as "premium import fish from overseas because it is boneless". It was more expensive than the other types of fish. Nowadays it seems dory is the pariah of the fish... :/

    1. I think there are many types of fish, all called dory (from wiki) so maybe the dory we are talking about here is different from the premium imported dory.

  13. Walau Eh! I just noticed that fishes are not cheap anymore these days.
