Just look at the plate of fish cakes. The size of the plates of the fish cakes and the Sang Har Mee is the same and everyone knows the size of the usual orange sauce saucer so you know how large the metal plate is. The prawns take up almost the full length of the metal plate so you can tell that they are very large. Lesson learned - asked for the price before placing the order.
By the size of the orange saucer, you can tell the size of this metal plate
The metal plate here is the same size as in the top photo.
i am not surprised because i know it's really no joke when you order "sang har mien".. luckily i am not a fans of prawns, and definitely not "sang har mien", hahaha.. given a plate of fishcake and a plate of "sang har mien" in front of me, i think i'd be munching the fishcake more~~ :D
ReplyDeleteQuite troublesome to dig out the meat from the sang har shell, that's true.
DeleteWow..that is a hefty price! But I love the Sang Har Mien anytime.. Mun, have you tried the shop in Batu Caves... there is a shop there selling sang har mien...very nice and worth spending... Pang Yu if I am not mistaken..
ReplyDeleteYes, I have eaten the Sang Har Mien at Pang Yu near Batu Caves but that Sang Har is very much smaller.
Delete*faints* but yes, it is that expensive here too. Next time, just ask for one, enough already. It is more the sweetness of the prawns in the gravy/sauce that makes the noodles taste really good.
ReplyDeleteNormally, I would go for the medium ones, not so big. The meat is nicer, not so hard and the body isn't much smaller - if you look at yours, it's the head that is very big...nothing much there and it is not nice unless it has the orangy pinkish paste-like "kor" in it - that is the best (so tasty) and also the worst (high cholesterol) part of the prawn's head.
Oh, it does have the golden roe. If you look closely at the photo you can see it. We said for 1 pax so we thought they would adjust accordingly. Who knew they would give us 2 big prawns. Thought it was those normal smaller ones.
DeleteSang har meen is memang expensive, usually I will order sang meen, no har, hahahahaha..
ReplyDeleteyep, no "har" one!! Same here, hehe...
DeleteOh, no har then what is the liao in the sang meen?
DeleteSheta, where do you eat those sang meen kosong?
DeleteNot cheap not cheap. The head already half the length. But like that la for seafood. I'd just take two of the fish cake. :)
ReplyDeleteOne plate of fish cake is enough but if have children gotta order two plates because I believe children love to eat fish cakes because they are easy to eat.
DeleteIt's a given when you order Sang Har Meen that it will be super expensive coz a proper Sang Har Meen should be made with such large prawns...more specifically large head prawns. With these large head prawns, you're assured you'll find the roe and it is this roe that detaches itself from the prawn heads and get mixed into the noodles and gravy to give it the luscious taste and that bright orange hue....prawns that are smaller will not have the same effect. I think they gave you two prawns (instead of one serving) because there were three of you and it's usually half a prawn each (and they can't keep the cut half for someone else...hehe!). If you enjoyed it, think of it as money well spent...haha!
ReplyDeleteYes, gotta think that way lah. Be positive. You are really a pro when it comes to food. Salute! :)
DeleteI think it is a good mistake you made lah. At least now you have tried it once before, having har meen like a king! It is a good experience.
ReplyDeleteI have eaten Sang Har Meen before but never with Sang Har that was this big. Good lesson.
DeleteIf you enjoyed the prawns and noodles, then it was worth it!
ReplyDeleteWell said! :)
DeleteGood lesson, I hope you've enjoyed the taste a lot!
ReplyDeleteNot bad, not bad.
DeleteOmg! Eating gold! But once in blue moon, it is alright to treat yourself to such luxury.
ReplyDeleteWe did not expect it to be this big and 2 at that.
DeleteGosh, those prawns are monster-sized! I'm droolng now leh......
ReplyDeleteI think you cook your own lobsters - will be comparable to these. :)
Deletethis is actually the reason why I always embrace either buffet or ala carte because yoy already know the price you are eating so it will not surprise you at all when the bills arrive hehe
ReplyDeletecan ask for the price before ordering too but we just plain forgot to do so.
Deletehaha. it is always good to ask how many prawns in one plate? lol. i would prefer huge lobsters and small prawns.
ReplyDeleteThe meat of this huge prawn tastes like lobster meat to me. We forgot to ask.
DeleteGood things like this don't come cheap but I love them! Worth every drop of gravy and price paid.
ReplyDeleteYou are right I guess.
